View Full Version : What the hell does my tattoo mean? (And future tattoo ideas, yours and mine)

Back in 1999, I went with a friend to watch him get a tattoo and while they were preparing him, I started browsing arts on the wall. Well, one art caught my eyes, a Chinese symbol for "weird":
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v606/WeirdPoe/20081128_0228.jpg
So I quickly got it. One year later, I asked my Chinese professor what it means and he said "Means-Devil!" *Quick nod* in his heavy accent.
Just bloody great.
Fast forward to today. I went with my wife so she can get her "I love you" sign tattoo (you will have to ask her nicely to show you guys :D), I happened to come across the Chinese symbols on the wall (totally different place) and saw the symbol for "weird". Tried to match it with what I have...nope. Saw "devil", tried to match it, nope again.
So here I am, asking you guys what the hell my Chinese symbol even means.
Thanks in advance! :p
Edit: Wow, that's a bad picture...Let me see if I can get a better one.

Your tattoo means weird in Japanese. At least it can. It's pretty far down the list in the dictionary's meanings. Above "weird" are attractive, bewitching, and calamity.
Edit: Actually it does seem to mean weird in Chinese, "strange, weird, supernatural, goblin, witch, devil, bewitching, enchanting, monster, phantom." Maybe someone with actual Chinese experience can tell for sure as I've never used a Chinese dictionary before and I may be wrong.

I've been pondering if I should put a different tattoo over it and cover it up with something different. Still not sure...mmm

Yeah, I found it in the Japanese translation dictionary. Tried searching for it in the Chinese dictionary, no luck.
So you are right, it is Japanese not Chinese.
That symbol of mine as a stand alone means what really? When I searched for it, it's always in combination with other characters. I'm just trying to find the worth and meaning before deciding if I should remove it/cover it with a different tattoo/keep it/etc.

I'm planning on making a Shield shape with a wolf image inside it and a Black smith hammer on one end and a half moon spiked axe on other end. And if you're thinking the right thought, yes it is Perrin Goldeneye from Wheel of time series but I also want to honor my dad since he is a life time construction worker (i.e. blacksmith hammer) and always fighting to get a good life for me and my sister (i.e. the axe) while the wolf is me.

What story, if you don’t mind my asking? Because if you haven’t decided yet, Ernest Hemingway has something incredibly succinct, yet dramatic:
"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
Mind you, I'm not sure that's something you want a tattoo of, but it would accomplish your goal, I think. :p

I recently got a tattoo in Arabic and only checked a few online sources and one paper arab-english dictionary and FREAKED when I realized I didn't ask a native reader. But our own LithiumFlower helped me out and told me I got what I thought I did. =) Same thing with the Latin I got. I've just been lucky.

I've got a variety of tattoo ideas for myself. I've been a fan of tats since I was a wee lad and have been drawing designs for various parts of my body since high school. I'm glad I waited, otherwise I'd have probably ended up with silly tribal designs and stars on my hands.
So far, I have two for sure that I'll be getting, but I'm working on the details. One's going to be a face of a lion that stretches across my right shoulder. I copped it from a Roman statue of a random general I spotted in the Louvre a few summers back. I'll eventually doll it up with a few tassles hanging down my bicep from the lion's mouth. I've already finished my mock up of that one, I just need to save up the cash. The second will be a full boot of plate armor that will go from my left knee down to the ankle. I'm still in the design process on that one. I want it to look like an actual armored boot, so I'm designing it in layers with a big plate on the shin and what looks like a laced leather boot wrapping around the back. Basically, I'm a giant history nerd and want to deck myself out in a perminent set of armor.
Other ideas floating around in my head include lyrics from Jimi Hendrix's "Sand Castles" and, my personal favorite, Godzilla on one fore arm and a city's skyline/Mothra on the other. This would just be for my own entertainment so I can act out Godzilla movies when I'm bored.

I have a quote from a book around my ankle- "J'y gagne a cause de la couleur du ble". Basically,it means that no matter what we lose, we still have the happy memories of it.
I also want the word for bliss in sanskrit somewhere, possibly the back of my neck. I will definitely be finding someone who knows sanskrit before I get that one inked, though! I'm also considering getting a chimera on one shoulder blade, and a phoenix on the other. Oh, and I want a line from a Robert Frost poem somewhere, but it has to be somewhere I can see it- maybe my other ankle? Then there are a ton of random little things I want, but probably won't get, because I don't have that many good spots to put them!

A dead blue bird, purposefully poor art, right under my elbow on the inside of my arm.

The flag wouldn't cover it as the black in yours is a touch scared, and the pigment is darker than the red white and blue, however you could cover it up with small back ground flow and have the flag beside or under it and work it in that way, keeping it to a min yet making it look nice.

My other option is to have a wolf's face that stares at you with yellow eyes and on top left is a battle axe of some sort or Sword and on other upper right is a black smith hammer.
Battle axe or sword = my dad fighting to give me and my sister a good life, fighting to protect us all our life (hes a single dad)
Blacksmith hammer = my dad always building homes (hes a construction worker/manager/etc for 30+ years, the old fashion "Do it right or don't do it at all" type Honor system), always building up opportunities for his kids, helping people when they need it, etc, very handy man.
Wolf = the ferocious loyalty my family has in our blood, always going through life supporting each other (mom wasn't in the picture since 1985 due to drugs). So we had to survive a lot of hard times just the three of us. Reminds me of the wolf pack.
Problem is, I don't know if it will look any good where the Japanese symbol on the bony area is and I don't intend the tattoo to be huge, just big enough to have realistic details and still stay small.

If anyone plans on getting something in a language they don't know then check with multiple sources (translators, dictionaries, etc.) and take what you found in, don't rely on the wall flash stuff.
For cover up jobs, come up with a few ideas of your own then go see a tattoo artist. They know what will and won't work and what will or won't look good on different body parts of different sizes.
I'm currently sitting at six finished tats and a seventh mostly done (I need more $$!) One is even in the artist's portfolio
Next planned tat is a raven in black and grays on the top of my left foot going up the leg a bit.
People wanting tattoos should talk to friends that have some and get recommendations on artists instead of just going to the place right down the street. Finding the right artist is just as important as finding the right tattoo.
P.S. I vote for the black square and having it called a pixel!

I want a gaming-tattoo so badly but I have no idea what to get.
The worst part is that I have to be very careful where I put it, because the job choice I'm looking toward frowns upon tattoos. I saw the chains from Bioshock and thought that would look awesome but it's too exposed on the wrists. Or the Lambda sign from HL2.
Ah! The right tattoos look so amazing/sexy on people.

I took my youngest daughter in on her eighteenth birthday and she got our clan crest with the Saltire behind it. Looks pretty sweet as the flag has a bit of wave to it. The detail work on the belt, buckle and crest is amazing! I hope it doesn't fade too much as she gets older.
I had our clan crest on my left arm but it faded so much it was unrecognizable; so I got a cover-up. I'll have to get it re-done sometime soon. My oldest daughter , my brother and my nephew all have a clan crest tattoo.

Sounds like a good idea, thing is if your willing to go as big as needed to to give the design the space it deserves and you have a great artist, one that also has a ton of experience of coverups, then your on the right track for sure.
Really search out an artist, not just your local one that your buds went to.
I say bench your artist on artists like this.
Bob Tyrrell www.bobtyrrell.com
Guy Aitchison www.hyperspacestudios.com
Aaron Cain www.Aaroncain.com
All great and if you go to Bobs links and the others, but really check in on Bobs you will see a host of other shops and artists out there, i could go on forever with the names, but these ones will blow ya away enough to start.
Either way, your artist doesn't have to be as good as these guys, but should be up there, and also equally important, beyond hygiene, make sure you get along with them and are willing to work with you with a smile.
hope that helps

How exactly do I know if a particular artist is the right artist (or a good enough artist, or whatever). I haven't gotten around to making the design for my first tattoo (the design I have worked on I want to save for later), and I'm not sure how soon I'm going to want to get it (but likely within the next 6 months).
But once I've figured all that out I have no idea how I would judge a good artist from a bad one. I think there are like 3 studios within walking distance from my house, and definitely a million more if I travelled a little bit. But when it actually comes down to getting my tattoo I'll have no idea where to head to.

Post the websites of the artists if you want, ill take a look and try and help you out with that, after that, its up to you. Do you like the people, the vibe, etc.

Np, you like graphics in games right? The pretty things, well you don't have to program to know what looks great, proportionate, proper lighting, shading, texture.
If you want a tattoo of a panther, house, portrait it shouldn't almost or kinda look the part, it should look EXACTLY like it. Settle for no less, if you have to then wait a bit longer. Tattoos happen when they are supposed to. Once on you never remember the wait.
And don't worry about that, your asking the right questions, day after day year after year I try and explain this to clients and randoms, and have to cover shit up after they realize whats possible.
Best to do it right the first time, but we all (myself included) have to learn somehow, and oft times a bad first tat will smarten us up right fast. There are a lot of incredible artists out there so don't sell your piece short.

I say bench your artist on artists like this.
Bob Tyrrell www.bobtyrrell.com
Guy Aitchison www.hyperspacestudios.com
Aaron Cain www.Aaroncain.com
Alright, I'm convinced. :p
Their styles and details are quite high compared to my local shops. Good thing the wife only got a simple hand sign "I love you" along with 2 of her other sisters getting the same thing.

What I want is hopefully simply really. It's a head of wolf (no need for any body) with piercing yellow eyes that makes it feel like it is stalking you with a sword or axe on one side and Black smith hammer on other side (sort of like a family shield with weapons).
The only thing I want is the wolf head to be as real as possible along with the sword/axe and Hammer and yet be as small as realistically possible that it doesn't overwhelm or take up my whole upper corner half of my back.
I might even keep the Japanese symbol a while longer to serve a personal purpose, until I find the right something to cover it up.
Seems like I have the right to be picky with what I want. Hopefully the artists wont think I'm too anal about it. :p

The moment they(who ever you talk to) starts with attitude, its time for you to walk. Your the boss. Don't get me wrong, with a great artist you should always allow them their artistic integrity as some of the best shit comes from it, but seeing as how you know what you want, if you came into my shop, I would welcome it, I do so much free handing that when someone does know exactly what they want it is a nice break from the crazy.

I was thinking of getting the silhouettes from MST3K as a band around my arm. Not so sure now. I'd love to get a new tattoo as soon as I find a design I like.
When I got my Grim Fandango tattoo, I just asked the artist for the Chinese character for "Awesome".

I'm probably getting my second tattoo next year. I don't know what yet, I just want it to be related to gaming. It's a huge part of my life and influenced a lot of the decisions I have made over the past few years.

I am planning on going here (http://slavetotheneedle.com/index.asp) to start off my tattoos, as it is highly recommended in Seattle and have a few friends who are very pleased with the shop. Now I just need to save up some money and not be distracted by a new video card...

Slave To the Needle is a great shop, can't do wrong, just pick the right artist for what you want now, you have already picked a great shop.

:D Quarterly bonus from work just came in today. Now I have to decide real hard-like to figure out whether I want to pay off some extra on my student loans, or go get a tattoo this weekend. Hermmmm....
