View Full Version : So, I'm finally getting a DS...

I've finally decided to cave in and pick up a DS for Christmas this year. So, I have to ask the community: what games should I pick up?
I'm a big fan of RPGs and adventure games. I'm already planning to get Legend of Zelda and The World Ends with You. I'm not interested in playing through Chrono Trigger again, despite any new features/content. So, what else have I missed out on that I should check out? What's coming up that I should set my eyes on? I'm all ears. :D

It was a lot of fun playing it with Kat, and she loved the single player, but I never even started it. The multiplayer and single player are pretty much two different games.

An old one that gets over looked these days:
Kirby Canvas Curse
Still one of my favourite DS games. It was also the first DS game that convinced me that the touch screen was a good idea. Not that that's really an issue anymore, but you know...

A rental/borrowing look, yes. Give it a try first. Its one of those that if you like the battle system, its great, if you don't, you'll snap that little card in half.

I'm hoping more pop in and give more suggestions. I doubt you will be able to play them all...but the more you have to choose from the better...

New York Times Crosswords. No shit.
I thought I was the only person who picked that up. My girlfriend is not fond of games at all, but whenever she comes over and I am working on something else she always asks to play "that crossword game"
The amount of content in that game is astounding.
Also... how did we get so far in this thread without anyone mentioning the greatness that is Picross. Speaking of which... for those of you that are stuck at work today may I recommend WiiPicross (http://wiipicross.com/)

It is a great little system. If I didn't play my PSP so much it'd be the DS you'd see me raving about so much instead. Portables rock just as hard as the big consoles now. :)

Aside from the RPGs, you need something pick up and play in small bites.
I recommend:

2) A good pair of headphones.
It's bizzare, stylish, unique and really fun.

^ I've always wanted to get a hold of that randomly.
I've been considering getting a new DS since mine is about close to breaking itself in half.
I would also recommend the Phoenix Wright games as I've had a blast with those. Also, the new Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are pretty good. If you're into that thing of course.

I was actually underwhelmed by Kirby Canvas Curse. The concept didn't evolve much over the course of the game and the game itself was fairly short.

I lol at this for truth. I either buy any new handheld for Ms. Claus first (DS lite) or I buy two of them when they launch (PSP). And she "borrowed" my special edition yellow Pokemon one, japan only, and I realized I needed to get another one.

I thought about that, but I want the GBA slot. I've still got some GBA games to play through eventually and the GBA SP I have is one of the earlier models with the front lit screen that washes everything out. GBA games look really good on the DS Lite screen.

5) The entire Ace Attorney series.

The one thing that bugs me about Lunar Knights is the graphics: there's no shadowing, making everything in the odd 3/4 perspective it has look very flat. Otherwise, it's a fun game.

The DS library is pretty incredible now for anyone just getting into the DS scene. Everyone already listed some great suggestions, but I wanted to throw in another vote for Kirby's Canvas Curse with the caveat that it's pretty short and I haven't played it since beating it... however it's still one of the most original games I've ever played, and I'm glad I played it.
The DS really is my main system nowadays, even though I have every console except the PSP. :D
Spigot
12-08-2008, 08:07 PM
I really like the PSP as well, though it fills a different portable niche than the DS. It's funny how I'll go weeks without touching one and focusing almost exclusively on the other, something that wasn't the case earlier. The PSP would gather dust for a long time back last year but now it is almost a tug-of-war between the two of them depending on my mood and what game I'm working on.
Of course, the PSP doesn't have Chrono Trigger (legitimately) so the win automatically goes to the DS :)

...but I wanted to throw in another vote for Kirby's Canvas Curse with the caveat that it's pretty short and I haven't played it since beating it...
It is really short and can be beat in 3hours or so. That said, I proceeded to beat it 3 more times with the three unlockable characters you can access. Plus, there is hunting out the (3) giant coins in each world and the Time Trial and Ink Trial runs to keep you occupied, most of which use alternate layouts of the worlds they represent. I put well over 15hrs into the game, even though story mode takes only 3 the first time through.
I think it's safe to say I'm the only one on this site who loved Children of Mana. ;_;
Children of Mana was way too repetitive in its combat and level layout and missions. And pretty easy to boot once you got 6-7 level ups into it. There are four characters and I have no desire to try the other 3, ever. I thought the magic system was weak too. I really wanted to like the game, so I pushed myself to beat it.
It's the japanese box art for Fatal Frame IV. I decided to swap out my old avatar for this one.
That is some hot box art. Hopefully, it doesn't get butchered on the transfer over to the States.

I've bought my first handheld ever yesterday. It's a DS obviously otherwise I wouldn't post in this thread.
I also bought Zelda PH alongside it. I like it, but I must admit it all does take some getting used to (seeing as how I played with pads for 20 years). I can't figure out how to do a bash move or roll for instance (create little circles at the edge of the screen, I thought I was, didn't work)

Here's a piece of advice. If you ever plan on finding a used copy of Metroid Prime: Hunters, I would HIGHLY recommend you avoid playing that game on Wi-Fi. That game is so infested with hackers and glitchers, I had to quit playing. It's impossible for anyone who isn't cheating in one form or another to advance to any kind of high rank. There's just no place there for someone who refuses to sink to the level of cheating in this game.

So, today I took my boys to Target to return one gift (the grandparents got Caleb a lego set he already has) and spend some of our Christmas cash.
I picked up New Super Mario Bros, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, and CrossworDS (kinda for me, and kinda for the wife, since she's a bit bedridden these days). I would have gotten The World Ends with You, but they didn't have any in stock. Luckily I have a Best Buy gift certificate, as well, so I can pick that one up later. Unfortunately, I've been busy all afternoon and evening, and haven't had a chance to play any of them. :(

If you're going to have multiple DSs, and you want to game against your kids ad hoc with only one game cart, I would recommend:
Bomberman Land Touch
Clubhouse Games
Mario Kart
Mario Party
Meteos Disney Magic
Namco Museum DS (multiplayer Pac-man!)
New Super Mario Bros. (minigames)
There are a lot more, of course, but these are some solid ad hoc, single cart games.
Edit for more games for kids:

Awesome! I got to play some DS last night with my nephew. We did some Zelda and Advance Wars battles. Then, I found out he already has both Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin AND Order of Ecclesia, as well as Sonic Chronicles. I borrowed PoR and he said I can take the others when I need them.
I actually have someone to exchange games with! Whoo-hoo! :D

Sorry, I just couldnt see the point in making a new game recommendations thread but I want me some recommendations anyway.
I'm considering:
Sonic Rush Adventure (I loved Sonic Rush)
Lock's Quest (I enjoy Tower Defense, but is it a good game in its own right?)
Chrono Trigger (never played any JRPG's, think I might prefer a real time game though)
Dragon Quest IV (is this real time or turn based?)

I'm considering:
Sonic Rush Adventure (I loved Sonic Rush) These were supposed to be pretty good, much better than the home console Sonic games.
Lock's Quest (I enjoy Tower Defense, but is it a good game in its own right?) I didn't really care for the demo that was on the Nintendo Channel for a while, but I now a few people liked it. The controls felt odd to me.
Chrono Trigger (never played any JRPG's, think I might prefer a real time game though) Well, this isn't real time, but there are no random encounters. It's still turn based, but it is a fun game, just a bit archaic.
Dragon Quest IV (is this real time or turn based?) Turn based, but great old school RPG goodness.
Some answers in bold.

So.... out of those, your choices would probably be Sonic Rush Adventure or Dragon Quest IV?
Also, what about Geometry Wars Galaxies?
And what ever happened to that RPG that is divided into sections that "swap" at routine intervals.

Personally, I wouldn't write off CT, but you really can't go wrong between CT or DQIV. GWG is really more GW from what I've heard, so if you want that portable, that should be good.

Oh..... just took the word "archaic" badly I guess. So its still good then?
Never played GW, but I heard Galaxies is a good puzzle/shooter game (you control a spaceship and shoot stuff right?)

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that it was bad at all, you could call them both archaic. One is an SNES game ported dirctly (for the most part) and another is an upgraded NES game. Both are still very good, but they lack a lot of what you'd expect from a modern RPG.
Your knowledge on GW is pretty much on par with mine. ;)

Ahh....
Thanks then.
I guess I need to decide what I feel like playing.
In fact, given my recent bout of Pokemon addiction, I'm not sure another RPG would be a good idea, although a hack and slash rpg would be nice.

I'd just like to say: I loves my DS.
You know what's most brilliant about it though? The price. A console with this many games where the most expensive they get NEW is still only $35? I dreamed of such a thing when I was but a boy. All my games back in the day were all used or bargain pick ups.
It's hard not to go buy crazy with the thing. The only thing that slows me is that while the library has dramatically improved, there still is something of a minefield effect in that I run into a lot of games that on the surface look like they could go either way. The FPS games suffer especially from this. I really need to just get Gamefly set up.
I picked up CivRev last night but, to be honest, I don't think I like it. It's still Civ for the most part, and it's not a bad game or anything, it just doesn't feel right. The rules are sort of a wierd mish mash, mostly Civ II, but stripped down, and with a lot of random bits from other games. The interface is sort of frustrating at times, and I find myself having to switch back and forth from stylus to pad to do some things, which is not as comfortable to me as doing so on the PC. Plus, the way they've simplified things, and the rather predictable AI and diplomacy options, make the game feel sort of samey on further playthroughs, enough that I started a second game this morning but really couldn't bring myself to finish it. So I think I'm going to take advantage of the 7-day used return at Gamestop and get something else, I just can't decide what.
I really want an FPS, but I'm torn on which one to get, or whether any of them will be worth buying since they're mostly single-player affairs. So far I've looked at the COD games, Moon, and Brothers in Arms DS, and Metroid Hunters, and while all seem to review well, and I'm eager to take advantage of that awesome stylus + gamepad control scheme, I'm just always so damn leery of 3d on the DS.

I bought Metroid Prime Hunters (used), played the first level for a bit, and got over it. I dont know why, its not that it looks awful or anything, its just that maybe I'm not convinced of the idea of an FPS on the DS. I just dont think its nearly as well suited to the genre as the PC or a home console.
Puzzle games, rpgs, platformers, now those are good on the DS.

Lock's Quest is very good. It has a few control issues (mainly that you can't rotate the camera and it can get a little imprecise in certain areas) but it's otherwise a rock solid Tower Defense game.
Chrono Trigger is still pretty much my favourite JRPG and holds up amazingly after all this time, so go nuts with it. It's a much more accessible game than a lot of other JRPGs and is just fun from start to finish.
DQIV is also good, but I haven't been roped into it as much as I'd hoped.

Thanks Spigot! Which of Chrono Trigger and Lock's Quest has better pick up and playability? I'm not sure I want a game that really benefits from lots of solid hours being put into it (partly because I dont have too many of said hours)

That said, there is usually a save point nearby in Chrono Trigger and if I'm not mistaken, you can make a suspend file any time...
Of course, I'd be remiss to not recommend Hotel Dusk: Room 215 if you're in need of a more cerebral adventure. It's unlike pretty much anything else on the system.

Well, I ordered Lock's Quest and Sonic Rush adventure. Got them via the Amazon Marketplace - much cheaper than normal price.

Then again, we both enjoyed the 360 version that this is a direct port of- it seems like you don't like a lot of the departure from traditional PC Civ, and that can't be helped. Once you take the difficulty up, you might get a different perspective on it. Maybe not!
I haven't really enjoyed an FPS on the DS. Metroid was competent, I just didn't have fun with it.

Neither have I. Metroid Prime Hunters was a pretty weak game as well. Very disappointing.

See now, I think the DS is just about perfect for FPS for one single reason: controls. Stylus+gamepad is pretty much as close as you're going to get to M+K short of actually having a mouse and keyboard. It worked great in the Metroid demo, in fact, it was originally one of my biggest selling points, but then the next couple years worth of software for it proved to be utter drek.
Having now purchased Hunters, I find the controls still hold up beautifully, though my L finger gets a bit tired sometimes. The SP gameplay itself is perhaps a bit sparse, consisting largely of wandering from room to room with the occasional interruption of a simple puzzle or locked-door monster attack, but it's still entertaining enough to keep me going, and the novelty of a shooter that controls this well on a handheld is nice. I do wish for a higher res screen at times however, as it can occasionally be difficult to pick out targets at a distance.
My Gamefly queue will soon be loaded up with FPS games I think.

I agree that the hardware is up to the task of displaying great FPS titles, but the platform hasn't delivered.
For me, that is.
It's awesome that you are getting a ton of fun out of DS FPS games, though. Let us know what's in your queue, and what you end up thinking about each game. I've been thinking about getting Moon.

Theresia. A point and click horror adventure. Not as complex in puzzles as Hotel Dusk or probably Time Hollow, but it's the ease of use that draws you in. What has you staying is the music and the extremely odd/disturbing plot that unfolds. Plus it has two play throughs, with two different characters and different plot perspectives.
