View Full Version : Weekend Gaming: Thanksgiving Edition - What's in your Queue?

Welcome fellow CoGer's to the first Weekend Gaming Thanksgiving Edition. For those not celebrating, just think of this as a one day early edition of Weekend Gaming, and feel free to find some excuse to get some extra gaming in. For those who are celebrating the day to overeat at the feast till you bust, Happy Thanksgiving! So what's on everyone's menu? I'm looking forward to plenty of turkey and the typical Thanksgiving sides. But once i'm done it's time for the real fun, four whole days of gaming.

Well I like to dream of four days of full time gaming. Unfortunately, i'm now editing two papers, then beginning the final two. So between the turkey, the gravy, stuffing and sweet potato pie there I will be with food stained papers attempting to finish off my work. However, the slacker I am, I'm going to find some time to game. On my gaming menu for this long extended weekend:

Mirror's Edge- A game that i'm really loving but not one I can play in short spurts. Something about being so frustrated at times and the need to really finish until the next checkpoint. But then the next checkpoint becomes the end of the chapter. I then lose about three hours of time. I wanted to play this badly during the week, but I had to stay away otherwise it would just pull me in. It's the love/hate of a game. The thrill of finishing a part stuck on what seemed like hours (ok, for me it is) and then having the need to play more, then you do, then stuck all over again. Oh the vicious circle of hating the game and wanting to just five more minutes with it. So now I get to enjoy that love/hate cycle while I recover from to much turkey/stuffing/mashed potatoes etc.

Castlevania Order of Ecclesia- This game has me hooked. I just started and once again lured in to the usual "side scrolling" goodness. I know for some it's derivative but sometimes that's not a bad thing. If that derivative gameplay is fun, then why not. I don't need reinventing of the wheel all the time. It's like the family dinner at Thanksgiving. You know all the entrees and desserts. They haven't changed, ever. Yet, for the most part we look forward to it. More of the same, but still great. TV watching is never better with some handheld goodness to keep you occupied.

Left4Dead- I'm going to play this. I'm gong to play this. I just need to be less lazy and actually take out the disc that sits in my 360 so I can play. I keep reading about all the great zombie killing that is going on that i'm missing out on.

Guitar Hero World Tour- This one was pushed to the side in the limbo pile of games that I wanted to play but with so little time, other games grabbed my attention. But feeling the need to pick up the plastic guitar to pay some tunes. Or continue the unrealistic reality I can actually play this game but have some fun trying. It's what I should be playing since it's easy to pick up, play some then go back to the editing/writing process.

That's all i'm planning. Wish I could take better advantage of my long extended weekend but my the rest of my backlog is locked away so I am not tempted. Let's hope I remember where I put the key and combination for that particular lock when I can finally play all the rest of the games I have waiting for me.

So what's for dinner...and what are you playing afterwards?

I'm hoping to power through to the end of Star Ocean: First Departure. It's a fun game but the story is a complete throw-away.

I haven't touched the co-op in Resistance 2 since the beta, so I really want to play some of that. Valkyria Chronicles will of course get a ton of time, I think I need to level up my units just a bit more before doing the next mission. FFXI maybe, depending on if the kids go to bed early enough. I'd really like to finish off SAM.

Currently watching Wall-E having rented it from Netflix (also got Tropic Thunder). The games I'm sure I'll be playing are Left 4 Dead and Chrono Trigger DS. I'd really like to find a copy of Metal Slug 7 at some point as well, but I'm not sure I'll get the chance.

Additionally, I'm hunting for awesome 16:10 wallpapers, as I just ordered this monitor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005109) last night. I expect it will be here on Tuesday.

Assuming my power gets turned back on after the electrician comes in to replace my fuse box with a breaker panel (renovations FTL!) I'll hopefully plenty of time into L4D, Mirror's Edge (must finish this game if it kills me) and A Kingdom For Keflings. I might also fire up Valkyria Chronicles or LBP if the mood strikes me, but seeing how as I'm working this weekend, my 'real' gaming time will probably be pretty limited this weekend.

Of course, Lich King might get some lovin' depending on how my schedule works out this weekend and there will probably be some Jeanne D'Arc played at some point.

All of that said, the bulk of my gaming time will hopefully be spent playing Chrono Trigger DS. Man, I do so love that game.

I'll be looking for you for L4D. Everytime I was on last weekend you were nowhere to be found. No one around to tell me to change my disc and play L4D :). And trying to finish ME might kill anyone...i'm still to early in the game to be at that point...and I did pick up Chrono Trigger DS. So tempted to put it in and try in my DS. Except then i'll have to put Castlevania OOE aside...and not sure I want to do that. I'm not really good at switching between DS games either...I focus way to much on the games i'm playing.

Oh yeah...glad you found us early Spigot :)

More Rock Band 2 and Picross DS for men when I can sneak it in. I wish I could play more but I have 5 professional licensing exams in December that need studying for, which trumps playing (or starting) other games. God, I wish December 29th was here already.

The staple Fallout 3. But also....

DMC4
Stuntman Ignition
The Last Remnant

I got a hankering for DMC4 last night so I will probably pop that in as early as this morning before we head out to my parents for Turkey Day. Might put some more time into Stuntman, which hasn't been too bad but is nearly impossible for me to get 5 stars in every mission. I'm only on the second movie, but so far it's a good game, just lots of trial and error.

TLR arrived yesterday but I won't get a chance to play until tonight! Can't WAIT!! We'll see if the technical aspects bother me as much as the reviews state, or if I can overlook them and find a great game beneath.

One of our senior programmers just bought a 4 pack of L4D licenses and handed them out to three of my coworkers, so between that and the few of us who had already bought it, it should hopefully be a very L4D-filled weekend. :D

I have some fond memories of the Stuntman series. Fond memories of attempts and success breaking a few controllers. Talk about love/hat for a game. I'm sure you bought this at a bargain...which this kind of game is perfect for.

Let us know how you like TLR. Compare/contrast your views with Spigot is always interesting :D. That's one i'm looking at for next year to play...

DMC4? I've never gotten into that series...

And I went a bit bargain hunting today online at CC. I know I might of gotten something cheaper tomorrow but I didn't want to deal with the mass exodus that might be hitting the CC site. I bought a 22" monitor that i'm going to use for my PS3/360 when Ms. Claus is gaming...or just doesn't feel like watching me game. So my gaming time is going to increase! Now I need to find some decent gaming headphones...

Got my Bond Blu-Ray packs in the mail, so I hope to tackle some of those this weekend.

It will be a rough weekend...On the one hand, the girlfriend is out of town for the day on Saturday, but I have to come into work and manage moving my office...so there goes that day of gaming.

My goal this weekend is to just play multiplayer games and only multiplayer.

[360]
NHL09
Gears of War 2
COD5

[PC]
Left4Dead

...and that's all I'll probably get to. I'm thinking of starting up Lord of the Rings: Online, though...may be something to play on a laptop while I watch the movers move stuff...

In addition, I'll also be playing more of puzzle game of the year World of Goo. Great work, 2D Boy!

Bah. That would mean I have to actually start playing TLR now!

I've never been a huge Stuntman fan but Ignition is great, esp. since you can find it dirt cheap. Cheap games can be forgiven if they are frustrating.

And last weekend wasn't the greatest for me in terms of gaming. This weekend might not be either, at least not on Saturday. That said, if I see you online, I'll definately shoot you an invite for some zombie/infected killing sprees!

I work tomorrow, so I don't have the long weekend that so many of you will be enjoying.

I do hope to spend some more time with Eets, as well as Sam & Max season 1 which I just bought last weekend. I'm really tempted to pick up the new THQ pack on Steam - Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, and Titan Quest (plus expansions for all three) alone makes it a tempting buy. I'll try to resist though.

So far today I haven't done any gaming, despite being home alone on a holiday. I've got a sweet potato in the oven, and after I eat that I'll probably hop on Steam and play some games.

I don't know what else I'll end up playing. I'll be back later with an update.

I bought two games today through the Thanksgiving sale at Circuit City, but when I placed my order I received no confirmation. After I hit "submit order" the screen popped up a message fast but then just displayed the CC logo. When I go into order status or My Account, it can't find my information (like I don't have an account). I tried many different possible emails, but nothing. I shot them off an email to see if I DID place an order, if it went through or not. I'll also monitor my credit card info.

But otherwise, I'm SOL. One of the titles I bought, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, is out of stock. I can go to the store or other stores tomorrow and get it for the same price, since many have the deal, but I can't until I know for sure that CC is shipping the games to me. G'ah!! I'm a bit irritated.

Anyway, off to play The Last Remnant. It's installing now.

You can always pad the playtime with time trials though. Apparently they are somewhat fun. This is on my next rental list, whenever Gamefly gets off their asses and sends it to me.

It's a brilliant game when it is doing the parkour thing. I adore it then. It also does a great job of showing that, yes Virginia, next-gen games CAN display colours that aren't brown and black and shades in between. I find myself squinting at the TV half of the time while playing Mirror's Edge because I just haven't had many games that tend to that level of brightness...

And I love it for that.

Where it infuriates me is when it drops you into one of those rooms where you either fight or die. Running is rarely an option as it's nigh impossible to move faster than the guys with the guns. These are the areas where I spend 15 minutes respawning while trying to do the same 20 foot sprint and takedown.

Sigh. That 5-10% of the game where it sticks you in situations like this is so mindbogglingly infuriating that I finally had to take a break from the game for a couple of days just to cool my head. I might fire it up tonight or tomorrow and see if I can breeze past the spot I'm stuck at, but I just pray to the gaming gods that the next Mirror's Edge game does away with guns, or at least the guys with 50-cal machine guns.

It was great advice. I just had to find a solution that would fit in very quarters. The monitor will sit next to me on a table which is next to the futon where I am for most of my existence when home. I was inspired by Heretic Machine getting a new monitor. I thought about it, went looking and realized I could afford something decent. I also went and bought myself a pair of headphones. So i'm all set. I can't wait when all my stuff arrives. Xmas is the day when I finish writing my last paper and I can just spend hours on end gaming...

Mirror's Edge should keep you busy. Busy cursing at the screen some...then being amazed how much fun it can be...then cursing again...it's that type of ride with the game...

This is the very reason I didn't play it during the week. I just didn't have that time to trial and error through a level nor deal with that frustration. I get the feeling to "lengthen" the game, the developer's chose in many spots to make it as difficult and unfair so you are forced to keep trying. I like the game overall and I feel challenged when I have to delve into the trial and error portion of the game. So I don't mind being frustrated for the most part. At least when I fail, it seems it's always possible to succeed. Not all games i walk away with that feeling. Still...I don't need a game's length inflated ...

I saw an episode of Phineas & Ferb, it was worth it just for the Perry the Platypus bits.

Weekend gaming for me. Hmmm.... ...I've been giving The Last Remnant another chance and the technical issues are not bothering me near as much as they were in the beginning but I'm still hating the main character and the voice acting. Spending time with the ex-wife and her family sounds...interesting. Hopefully you had a good day overall. :)

We are changing holidays next year. We are adding two more, although I can't recall which ones. It might be President's Day and another one. It's not really a good thing though, since the two extra days come directly out of my PTO pool. Oh well. Hopefully I'll have a different job in the company by then so I don't have to come in the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas. My department is one of the few that has to work on those days.

Speaking of Blue Dragon, I actually haven't played a single JRPG this gen. In fact the last one that I played was Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast. I've never been a big JRPG person.

I played a bit of Sam & Max Episode 1: Culture Shock today. It was a lot of fun, and I love the humor. I received several invites to Left 4 Dead, which was tempting, but I decided to stick with S&M instead (haha).

I'm going to watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind now. I got it from Netflix and this will be my first time seeing it.

I rented this game back in July on Fits/Jay recommendation. I never played any kind of Civilization game before or any kind it's genre. Well this game sucked me in...badly. I loved it, helped by the achievements I wanted to play as each "leader" beating the game with each one. I finally sent it back because if I kept it I would of put more time into it and I really wanted to try other games over the summer. Great pick up...

I haven't done much playing of JRPGs either this generation. I've tried many...then put them back for later use. But i've never been a big player of them even in the past. But all the talk of them from the rabid fanbase (you know who you are) just lure me into another genre. Which somehow is how I end up with a new computer monitor that i'm going to use for console gaming. I swear it's all very six degrees of buying...this forum has done awful things to my wallet...

Did some early A.M. gaming this morning, being up for the black friday deals online. Thought I get some play in before I fell back asleep. The chapters in Mirror's Edge are going quicker, just finished Chapter 4. I think the first Chapter was the biggest pain in the ass. Most feel it's because it's getting used to the game. I think the game design was poorer in that level than the rest. I don't think my skills controlling Faith got suddenly better. I'm not sure when was the last time I played a game that the first part was the most difficult. It's unfortunate, since that first part may turn off a lot of gamer's. It definitely gets more balanced even with the annoying "fight off men with giant perfect aiming guns". This game really is for me Tomb Raider in first person. And yes, for some of us, that is a good thing...

For some reason I actually played Resistance 2 competitive online this morning. This is very out of character for me, since I literally haven't played an online FPS competitively, well, since I popped in a few matches in Halo 2 back around when it launched.

I actually had a surprising amount of fun in just a random everyone for themselves deathmatch game. It was only 7 players, so it wasn't too chaotic, but it was pretty fun. It also reassured me that I don't suck, since even though it was my first match, I only came in 3rd (59 kills to me, 2nd had 61 and the winner hit the limit at 70). I can't believe I'm saying it, but I may actually play that again. It was good dumb fun, though nothing I could see playing too much, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

That's right. Blue Dragon is the game of choice for the damned, no matter what Focus On The Family might tell you :)

Am I EVER going to get into a game of L4D with live people? I refuse to do a pick-up match on Live because I hate the gibbering hordes but nobody is ever available to play with me when I get online. Maybe tonight?

Mags: Sam & Max is great... are great? I still have to finish up the first season (I think I have one or two episodes to go) and then I can start to work on the second season. I really should load the games up on my laptop. I bet they'd work just dandy.

You are in for a treat.

I watched 1.5 hours of it, and I'll watch the last hour tonight. So far I'm loving it. It's much better than I expected it to be, and I can't wait to see what happens.

Mags: Sam & Max is great... are great? I still have to finish up the first season (I think I have one or two episodes to go) and then I can start to work on the second season. I really should load the games up on my laptop. I bet they'd work just dandy.

I played through most of the first episode, and so far I'm having a good time. I could probably get through them all pretty quickly, but I have to click on every single thing multiple times and go through all of the dialogue so that I can hear every voice sample in the game. :o

A sweet potato?

Gnomey, Give Max a call. See if he wants to go window shopping!

The sweet potato was delicious. :p

Max has my number, but I don't have his. He'll have to call me if he wants to do something....hopefully he calls soon. :(

Am I EVER going to get into a game of L4D with live people? I refuse to do a pick-up match on Live because I hate the gibbering hordes but nobody is ever available to play with me when I get online. Maybe tonight?

I'd gladly play L4D with you. But since i'm one of the damned and all...i'm to busy watching the world burn while playing Blue Dragon :p. At least i'm not dying in the fiery earth...

Look for me tonight...I'll try to be on around 10pm...that's your usual haunting hour I believe. Ms. Claus most likely will be sleeping off BF shopping...just throw me off of ME, when you see me...

Somehow I think Conan will still be in the bargain bin when you go again...

I tried Burnout and it looked gorgeous. It was even fun to play around with...except I kept trying the races and I kept getting lost or thrown off by the stupid directional arrows. A game with such promise...only to be ruined by my inability to play the game...

Starting with a blast through Resistance 2. Next off there will be some Legendary to close that Pandora's box. And finally to end it all I'll throw in some LittleBigPlanet. I'll be getting the most out of my ps3 for sure.

I was interested in it but I have heard enough negative things to push it to the bottom of my pile of interest. Maybe I'll give it a shot in the spring when I'm out of things to play, but not right now.

It doesn't help that it's a shooter and a lackluster one at that. I'm so burnt out on those.

I had watched the dev diaries on it over the past few months and it looked like they had an interesting thing going. Not something AAA, but at least a B grade game that'd be worth picking up a little cheaper down the road.

I was really disappointed to see the scores it was getting, but I have a feeling it was another victim of the "gotta rush it out for the holidays" syndrome publishers suffer from.

BUT WITH MONSTERS!... yawn.

I also thought about picking up Burnout: Paradise. Target was packed with soccer moms and their brood (not the usual crowd at this location), so I ran out there screaming without picking up anything other than socks and a MS 1600 Point card - which was on sale for $15. I came home and discovered that I already had 2000 points in my account, so now I have 3,600. Oops. :o

I don't think that is the norm. A game like Dead Space while not selling as much as EA wanted, sold decent enough not to be half priced. Chalk it up to Black Friday, the lousy economy and stores needeing to lure customers in. Still sucks that you paid full price though.

By the end of the game you are an expert marksmith of the shooting off limbs. Although I still wanted to do headshots...which explains why I burned through so much ammo...which makes the game very interesting when you are out of ammo and the only recourse is to run...

How is that? I'm busy reading the manga right now and I really liked the first Naruto game (well, first GOOD Naruto game) last year.

It's very much like the first game except that there are more playable characters, and you have 3 of them at the same time, and you can tag out between them during battle (which is great).

Also, a large part of the gameplay revolves around using the special abilities of the trio together to solve puzzles. For instance, Sasuke's Sharingun slows down traps that would be impossible to navigate without him, Naruto makes shadow clones to create bridges, and Kiba can turn into his little dog to scurry under gates or houses to reach switches. All characters can use most of their jutsu in the field and there are many more examples of this I'm not mentioning.

There aren't really side quests anymore because the village likes Naruto now, and the focus is on earning "friendship" points by doing all kinds of quests with your friends or by training with Lee in the dojo. So I guess there are sidequests. . . they just aren't formalized.

You also get to go to Tazuka Town, where the pervy sage teaches Naruto Rasengan, and it contains about 7 minigames that are all okay, but with 3 that are really fun.

So far I'm really liking it, but it is pretty short like the first one. I'm nearly done with about 72% of the story done, but I've been distracted by The Last Remnant and WoW (which I play with my brother and prioritize to play with him due to his busy schedule).

I'm also reading the Stephanie Meyer books after having been dragged to the first film (which I enjoyed but did not love). . . they are pretty short but have quite a bit of filler while you wait for Bella to draw conclusions any half-wit would have figured out 50 pages before. That's a bit frustrating, but I still like the books. I'm also a bit annoyed that Meyer has constructed her monsters so that Bella never has sex and this makes her relationships stay at a junior-high level even though Bella is 17 in the first novel and 18 in the second (I'm halfway through it). That's probably done purposefully in order to target a mass market teenage demographic, but it strikes me as false. . . even for a character as mousey as Bella. Yet despite these criticisms, I'm enjoying the reads.

I understand completely. But many of us bought it for less than $60 before it was even released. You gotta stop those impulsive brick-and-mortar purchases Brock. The power of the internet calls you!

I had to take two games off my Xmas list yesterday that I gave to my girlfriend's parents. They were the ONLY two games I had on there. They weren't happy and said I need to stop buying stuff, but I know for sure that her mom would have bought me one of those games for $60, when I scored BOTH yesterday for about half the price of ONE game. My excuse is the better the deals, the more I can get for Xmas. But so many people don't bargain shop, they just take the first price that stares them in the face.

I have a bunch of trade paperbacks on that list, and I told them that Amazon or Buy.com (or any place online, really) will sell them for at least $5 cheaper a piece, sometimes more. Instead they'll go to a store and spend full retail price on them. For every 2 books they bought ONLINE, I could get an extra book for free! :)

Black Friday and an awful economy. I don't think you would of saw such a decrease last year so soon after release...Most of the time it's going to stay closer to the original price. But you have to think, if you enjoyed it when you got it then that is part of the price paying when you did.

That would involve me not living up here in the land of snow and polar bears. We just don't have the same kind of options for game purchasing as you guys do, esp. over the internet. Sure, we can buy games on Amazon.ca, but I'd be waiting until February before they bother to send me a game like TLR and to top things off, Amazon.ca isn't even listing the game. The other stores like Future Shop or Best Buy rarely give you any deal to make shopping there (either online or at the brick & mortar store) worthwhile.

I will say this. Between seeing the crazy price reductions (be it for Black Friday, because of the economy or because magical fairies sprinkled wish dust on retailers) on games that have been out for less than a few weeks or months and the sudden spike in prices of new games to $65+ up here, I'm going to cool my jets... a lot.

I know that $65 is only $5 more than what I'm used to paying, but there is some kind of psychological barrier that springs up when you see that 6 as the first digit of the price as opposed to the 5. I was also rather miffed to see a game like Eternal Poison go from $39 last week to $49 this week.

I only have Persona 4 coming my way from now until whenever inFamous comes out, so I'll be fine as long as I resist any other spontaneous purchases like the new Naruto game, but there have been a combination of factors over the past few days that have sent me into chill mode.

We'll just see how long that lasts :) Having to pay for my basement renovations will also help kill my spending from now until June... I hope.

Yeah, you Canadians have a really slow mail system from my experience. I mailed something a few months back and it was slow...but the price wasn't much different (if at all) when shipping first class. Less than $2 for a game anyway.

Otherwise, what you need to do is befriend one of us Americans and get us to buy cheap games for you and ship them. The cheap price will make up for the slow shipping. Though games are not really cheap here...we have to hunt for those deals. Most people pay that ridiculous $60 here as well.

But since you're Canadian (essentially, demon-spawn) I doubt anyone would ever want to help you. :)

The only time that would really be worth while is if you have these insane price cuts weeks after a game comes out and then you still have to deal with the shipping costs...

I really just need to work on resisting the impulse to buy games the moment they come out. The sad thing is that this year was a pretty good improvement over the last few years and I STILL bought more games than I was planning too over the fall. Ah well.

Wow, $29.99 is a good price for it. I'm still having an okay time with it, though after hours and hours of play, the battle system is less engaging and I'm less interested in grinding out stats now that I am playing WoW again (scratches the stat building itch like sandpaper). The problems that are covered in the main thread on this game persist throughout, of course. . . but the gameplay makes me overlook them. I may return it and then rent it again later on, but $30 is a great price, so I might just order it from Amazon instead.

Spigot, what the hell are you doing to your basement? I'm hoping it's a massive game room...Well, it's going from being a giant concrete block filled with nothing but boxes of junk that I've moved from house to house and apartment to apartment for the last 10+ years to being a functional, fully furnished basement with a room for the kids to play in (and for me to eventually game in) and a bathroom and all the fixin's. It's just taking FOREVER to get it done... and about $20K to do it all. Suffice it to say, come the new year, I will have to live off of my game purchases from 2008 or my wife will start selling off all of my electronics.

Thankfully the only game I know about that is slated for 2009 that I'm even remotely interested in is inFamous, so I'll just remain fixated on that and ignore anything else (FFXIII? Pish posh!)
