View Full Version : The Best Zombie Books?

After traversing through the 31st century, following the Horus Heresy for a few books, I've decided I need a genre switch. I am a zombie fan. They're probably my favorite horror creature of all time. Finding a definitive list of good zombie books is difficult though.
I know there are a LOT of zombie fans on this site. I need book recommendations. I'm currently reading The Rising by Brian Keene. It's supposedly a good book, but I'm wary of the non-traditional zombies. They're actually intelligent. I'll give it a chance though.
I found a lot of talk about the Autumn Series, but those books are nearly impossible to find. According to IMDB, a movie has been made based on the first book and is supposed to come out in June 09; hopefully there will be a reprint.
I've already read The Zombie Survival Guide and WWZ, so no need to recommend Max Brooks. I'm all over that.
So, what's your favorite zombie book?

Are you open to the idea of comic books...I'm sorry, graphic novels? The Walking Dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead) from Image Comics is pretty great. Or at least, it was when I was reading it. I kinda fell off after awhile when I realized my money needed to go towards things that are necessary for my survival, like food.
Why can't comics be printed on tortillas?:(

The Rising and City of the Dead are top notch.

I wasn't really a fan of The Rising or City of the Dead. They weren't bad, but nothing really special. I am currently reading Keene's Dead Sea, and feel it is far superior to the others.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I'm open to just about anything involving zombies. Looks like these were compiled into 9 volumes? I'll keep an eye open for them. The only bummer about "graphic novels" is that they're very easy to tear through, since the actual amount of writing is minimal. I checked out the first volume preview on Amazon, looks cool.

Ironically, everything of Keene's after the aforementioned two has been absolute drivel in my opinion. I haven't read Dead Sea though.

You should give it a shot. More traditional zombies then in his other stories, but still has some ties to the other work. I've only read three of his books, but this one is my favorite by far.

I second this comment.
I didn't buy into the hype/praise surrounding the book... until I picked up the first hardback volume. It was very well-deserved, and just another sign of stubborness on my part.
It's a really fun book thus far, though. I'd say check it out.

I may have to revise my recommendation of Dead Sea. Let's just say, it 2/3rds of it are the best Keene book I have read. It gets a little silly at the end.

Walking Dead is pretty awesome. I haven't read it in a while (got the first four trades), but I know several people who buy it religiously. Personally I prefer movies (I saw the whole Romero series for £30 the other day. Quite possible asking for it for xmas), but I'm going to read WWZ soon which may completely change my mind.

Another guaranteed recommendation for Walking Dead. While I gotta say that I still miss Tony Moore's art on it (he only did the first few issues (the first volume,)) Charlie Adlard has grown on me over the later volumes. Now that I think of it, I need to grab the latest TPB...

You know, I think I got in an argument about which artist was the best a loooong time ago on EA. I prefer Tony Moore.

Well, as he would just be getting into Walking Dead, I didn't want him to get his hopes too high.

It may have actually kept me away if it started with the current artist. As is, I got hooked early.

Yeah I just got the Walking Dead hardcovers 1-3 last week. The first half of Book 1's art is way better than the rest. That aside, the story is awesome. I couldn't get enough of this series. I read all 3 hard covers in 4 days. I can't wait to pick up the 4th. Highly recommend these. I got book 1 on ebay for $20 and books 2 and 3 from my local Borders for $30 each.
*edit* Amazon.com has books 1-4 for $20 each. Last Friday 1-3 were out of stock.
