Monday’s episode of In-Game Chat can now be downloaded (http://ingamechat.net/audio/IGC20081124.mp3).

This episode was a bit like a run-on sentence for us. We began with a small handful of good ideas and ended very far indeed from where we’d set out to be. Satisfaction is high among the cast with Left 4 Dead, and we’re coasting through the final months of the year with the joy that comes of pawing through a bloated catalog. But there’s a strong feeling that we’re entering the denouement of this year’s release schedule, or that we’re at the tail end of a passing storm - a strong one.

We’re picking up the pieces now or pulling together the plot lines or whatever metaphor you prefer. In any case we’re close to the end of another, unnecessarily crowded holiday schedule, with just enough time left in the holidays proper to gorge ourselves, purge, and gorge again before the new year, the resolutions and the discounts and sales. The offerings thus far have been more impressive than depressing, so we can only hope that sentiment will hold true when all is laid down for the final tally next month.

I'm totally there with having games as part of a collection... when I have the money to do so. Sometimes I have to pick them up later, since I rarely, rarely rent games (a combination of my plodding playstyle and not very much time).

I find the comparison to a read book interesting, in how the journey is told through it's usage, but I find that's what Achievements and Trophies accomplish for me. Yes, they're nice to be rewarded after a particularly hard level, and yes, they've got me to do things I normally wouldn't do otherwise (sometimes even pushing me into replaying a game), but one of my favorite things to do is pull up my Friends list and compair. I can see that this guy was a total dick in Fable II, or that guy blazed through Fallout 3 as fast as he could, or the guy that just got Seriously 2.0 obviously hasn't bathed in weeks. When well done, they can tell the story of your adventure theough the game. Sometimes I even like to pull up my own list and go back through old games and reminisce about getting certain Achievements.

I have a Silver Account because I don't have broadband available in my area right now, but that's the reason I maintain my Friends List and periodically connect to Live elsewhere (and welcome new invitations, if you don't mind a little dead weight on there ;))

The only games I keep in my collection any more have couch co-op. Maybe couch Vs if there is more to it than a standard shooter.
