View Full Version : 2 PC's 1 Monitor
Wow, what a great set up to a reference of something really bad. I know someone is going to do it...
So I went looking for a solution to this minor conundrum. I am actually hooking up both to my television which only has 1 VGA port. I saw some switch box things online - they all look so old. I saw a 70 dollar device at Office Max, and a 50 dollar one at Best Buy that does the switch via usb. I just want like a VGA splitter. Is anyone else running something like this? What do you use? Is it less than 40 bucks?

The most common answer for this is going to be a KVM switch. I would not worry about it being old... this is a specific type of technology that ages rather well. There's no reason you'd need the newest, cutting edge switch to get the job done. IMO, of course.
But are they all as expensive as Office Max?
Oh and will I be able to connect my 360 to it as well?

If your TV has HDMI and one of the computers has a DVI port you could grab an HDMI to DVI cable from Monoprice for about $10.

Sadly all ports are occupied... 1 VGA and 1 HDMI
Which is why the switch solution might work out best.
With the added resolutions to the 360 (I also had a spare VGA cable for that), if I could add that it would be a great bonus!

Old School (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817404038), but I think this is what you're looking for. (The lone review mentions using it for a 360, and it works fine) This one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817399032) includes USB ports.
Remote Desktop is how I use 2 PC's and 1 Monitor.

You need a 2-port KVM switch. This will enable you to use one display, keyboard and mouse, and then switch between them on the fly. Geneally they'll be available in PS2 or USB, which is which type of KB/M they support.
I'm actually needing one myself, I've just been too broke for one. I've got two boxes, and only one decent monitor, plus having two completely seperate workstations is really a pain in the ass.

For quality reasons, I would suggest. getting a HDCP compliant video card(s) two HDMI cables and a HDMI switch. I have never found the VGA splitting devices that do a good job. Also stay the hell away from Hdmi to DVI D conversion devices, they are not reliable and are not HDCP compliant.
More over, why 2 computers? How do you have one that does not do the same things as the other?

I have both my 360 and my PC hooked up to my monitor via a KVM switch, it even passes the audio through so I can use the same speakers for both. If you get one that supports USB keyboards, you can use your keyboard on your 360 too.
