I think I need to spread some love for Battlestations!

http://battlestations.info

It's a board-game with slight RPG elements (you need a GM/referee) based on ship-to-ship combat and boarding actions.

You have two sets of game boards. One is the ship your crew is on, one is the space map with the ships on it. You run from station to station performing actions, and attempting to usually blow up the other ship. There are missions in the books that have you doing other stuff as well.

It's hard to explain how well it works. It's the closest thing to a Star Trek game I've ever played, with each player having a role on the ship (Pilot, Engineer, Scientist, Marine) and ship-to-ship combat being a major factor while the individual players remain important.

It's great fun to teleport to the enemy ship and try to convince your buddies back in the U.S.S. Friggin' Invincible to stop shooting it so you can stop shaking all over the place and actually capture it.

I've not played the game in like a year.. Perhaps I'll try to rope my group into a game of it soon once I get the box set back..

I will check this out. Off the cuff is it more or less detailed than Twilight Empires.

That name doesn't ring a bell, sorry. Did you mean Twilight Imperium maybe? (The only thing close I know of.)

Ahahaha
A sign I play too many games.
I mixed Fantasy Empires and Twilight Imperium together...to creat my own game!
Ya I mean TI. Is it anything like it?

Nothing like it. Twilight Imperium is empire building and strategy and all that, while Battlestations! is about tactical moving little guys on a map of your spaceship while it simultaneously fights one or two other ships on a hexboard with some asteroids thrown in for good measure.

It's gawd damn sick just how much that got me stoked when you described it*
I will of course check out this crack like game.

This game is intriguing to me, and yet I have not until this moment heard a single peep about it. This is odd. I shall have to suitable chastize theRPGsite for failing me in this matter.

Well, it's not really an RPG. It's like Inquisitor or Warhammer Quest in that you create characters, have advancement and XP and need a referee, but don't actually do any real roleplaying

You actually get bonus XP towards promotions for dying, which means you don't worry too much about playing it safe. It's amusing when the most incompetent person in the group is "rewarded" with the highest rank for dying in the line of duty so often, and it really fits with the backstory and fluff of the universe.

I've actually looked at this one a few times in the past, but I never picked it up. Now it's out of print, and regret is sinking in.

Hope they do another printing in the neat future!

I found a copy of this at the local brick and mortar game shop yesterday, but the game wasn't in the best shape and they were charging $60 for it... I decided to pass on it for now but at least I know that I CAN get a copy of it, if I need to. Gotta talk to the gamers I group with to see if it interests them for that price.

Man, this game looks like a total blast! I have a feeling my dormmates would love this thing. You say it's out of print though? sad...

Their webpage doesn't indicate it being out of print. Maybe distributors no longer have it?

(An aside, the $59.95 price point is $10.00 higher than when I originally bought it. Damned inflation!)

Apparently there's a new run of the 1.10 rules that's making its way back into stores and online retailers. Hopefully that means I can nab myself a cheaper copy soon.

I have been playing it, since shortly after it came out... it kind of reminds me of space hulk meets Paranoia, in all honestly. GREAT, fun game.
