View Full Version : The Misadventures of the Anti-Patriots

I am, of course, talking about the Detroit Lions. How can a team be so bad, so consistently? For years they have sucked, barely being decent for awhile when Barry Sanders could carry them with his amazing running abilities. Bad enough where their only star, one of the greatest running backs ever, couldn't take it any more and quit.

And now, 0-11? Astoundingly awful. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving to see if they can make it 0-12. To be up 17-0 and then be dominated and lose in a one-sided game takes more than just playing poorly: it takes real skill to be that bad.

Will they be the first team ever to go the full season and lose every game? I am hopeful, but when it comes to the Lions, you learn that hope is rewarded with pain. They are so bad that they will somehow screw up even the anti-perfect season. Heck, they will probably find a way to screw up getting first pick in the draft. They are that bad.

All my MI homeys know what I'm talking about. Am I right, or am I right? What needs to happen for them to stop sucking?

I thought you were talking about the Bengals. My buddy is a huge Lions fan and we now just compete between one another to see who's number one between us. I'm winning this year which is an amazing feat given how freaking awful my team is.

I feel your pain.

Heh... glad you like it. It amuses me, too. :)

Yeah, it doesn't look the the Bengals are much better this year, nor is Kansas City. Don't worry, I'm sure both teams will do better next year. Of course, Detroit will continue to suck, since it is what they know how to do best.

I know what is going to happen, now. Bengals and KC will not win any games for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, my Anti-Patriots will pull off two, unimpressive worthless victories that no one will care about, safely putting them into at least third from the bottom, throwing away the first choice in the draft.

How has their schedule been overall? I know several ok teams with really good schedules that have inflated their records. Of course you also have teams like the Giants with a fairly hard second half of the season.

Yeah, the only thing giving me any actual hope/comfort is the fact that I've convinced myself that they're blowing games on purpose just to get a decent draft pick so that next year they can swoop in and be unstoppable.

Unfortunately, this is what I comfort myself with every year.

Honestly, I really haven't been following the schedule too closely this year, only tuning in occasionally to make sure that they are still losing. I'm not sure how some of the other teams have been doing, but what I remember from last year, the rest of the year doesn't look too promising: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/teams/schedule?team=det

Heh, they play the Titans on Thanksgiving. 10-1 vs 0-11. This should be a completely, one-sided shlubbing.

Amen to that. Shit, Ford needs to sell the Lions to Illitch. Sure, the Tigers don't always do great, but they've been to the World Series recently, and he has made a team that the rest of the NHL strives to emulate. Fuck, how can you beat a team that top caliber players are willing to take a pay cut to play for?

Yeah, I am thrilled to have the Wings, but it is still disappointing that there is no football worth discussing in Detroit.

Awww, and I thought this was gonna be a Metal Gear Solid 4 thread

This is why we need a dedicated sports forum!

And the Lions suck ass. I can't wait to see them go 0-16, unlike that one year they had to win a game and be 1-15.

The Lions suck so bad.. no one in Michigan gives a shit about the NFL because of it. Football is a college sport here. After that.. we really like Basketball and Hockey.

Damn, now I wish I'd caught a single Lions game. Might be able to see them playing the Colts or the Packers, but otherwise I only have so much choice of what I can watch when At least the coverage over here has improved in the last year or two, and I get some choice of games. That and torrentage to make sure I see my team's game.

Oh, if only the Titans were still on a clean streak, then next week's Titans/Lions game would be a treat!

Your hopes for the anti-season will be trounced when the Vikings play them. We almost lost the first game this year against the Lions. The Vikes LOVE losing to shitty teams. :(

Year after year, the Lions draft ridiculously talented WRs, yet that have no QB to throw to them, no offensive line to protect whatever QB they do have, and no defense to hold any lead they can somehow pull off. Truly a misguided, pathetic, terribly ran franchise.

Nah, don't worry. The Lion's specialty is getting the hopes of their fans up, then smashing them to the ground, stomping on them while laughing maniacally. Almost loss? No, the Vikings were assured victory from the moment the schedule was made.

And, the second time they play them? No one wants to be the one to break the losing streak; since it was closer than they liked last time, they'll take it very seriously. I anticipate the Vikings crushing the Lions.

It's good to know there's someone out there doing a worse job than Al Fucking Davis. Not that I follow the Raiders anymore particularly. Not since I was about 12, and before about twelve years of not being able to watch football.

Al Davis is definitely terrible too, but at least the Raiders make (IMO) decent draft picks and have a relatively solid base (ie, McFadden, Russell, etc). He's just a complete prick to work for and it must be incredibly difficult for a coach to try and establish himself there while constantly being looked at and scrutinized.

It's something I've noticed becoming more and more prevalent in sports today. Complete impatience by ownership and management. It takes a while to build a solid team, especially in football. These coaches get fired after losing a few games, a timespan in which you can't get shit done. Look at Eddie Jordan for the Wizards (NBA). He has 6 solid years there, a few nice playoff runs, and he gets fired after a 1-10 start which can largely be traced back to 2 of his starters being injured to begin the season. Just not fair, imo.

Aye, even look at how close Coughlan came to being fired last season, and then what happened... The trigger happy attitude of owners is insane. It's been a problem for Newcastle Utd. over here for a while too. Terrible performances, and a defense that needs serious money spent on it, and instead they just kept wading through managers trying to make it work. Not they're just desperate to sell, which given the current owner is a bit of an Al Davis, would be no bad thing.

Right. I don't know if you follow College Football at all, but the same thing is happening with Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. One of the premier NCAA teams, but in his first year they're having one of their worst seasons in a long while. However, his style is completely different than what the talent of the team was built around. Look at what he did at West Virginia and you can see what type of players he needs to recruit. I'm sure if he's given the time to get some of his recruits in and establish control, they'll be fine, but being on such a short leash in a premier football program, it's tough to get that kind of time.

I haven't been following the politics, but are they really talking about canning Rodriguez? It was clear to me that this is a case of growing pains. But, it is painful to have the Lions suck and also have the Wolverines thinking they are the Lions.

Yes, they do indeed suck, and have for quite some time. But there is always hope. I am a Dolphins fan, so I was right where you were last year. It can turn around relatively quickly, even if it seems to never turn around in Detroit. The Fords just need to get out of the NFL business.

I've definitely heard multiple times that it was rumored. Personally, I think it's ridiculous and every analyst I hear talk about it thinks the same, so who knows what the Michigan Athletic Dept. is thinking. Hopefully, for his sake, it's just talk.

BTW, I'm not a Michigan fan at all, but seeing him come from the Big East, I'd like him to succeed.

Well, the Loins (yes, that's deliberate) Titans game was as amusing as I was hoping. But, at least they don't have a star wide receiver who shoots himself.

Too many times this season I've wanted to yell something at Burress about dropping the pimp hat and the 'tude... And apparently it might have been a good idea! At least Hixon got to show how good he's looking (from pre season I wanted to put him in a fantasy team) against the Cardinals.

The Lions-Titans game was as hilarious as I had hoped. I was a little disappointed that the Titans weren't able to maintain a 21 points per quarter like they scored in the first, but at least it was a completely one sided beatdown.

The highlight of the day, for me, was getting to see Roy Williams play on a competent Dallas team. I am so glad that his talent didn't get squandered on the wasteland that is the Lions.

He actually went to the playoffs 5 years straight after clearing the mess that was the wiz after jordan. The main problem is They resigned GILBERT knowing he was hurt..... for 111 million...... and let a couple good roll players go... I went to a few games before the end of the season last year after gil sat down for injuries. We had good chemistry through butler Mason jr and a few of the other non stars..... No they have to resign gil just to butts in the seats and hes gotten as bad as shaq miss half a season with a stubbed toe....

Looks like the Lions have high hopes (http://www.freep.com/article/20081202/SPORTS01/812020347/1049/rss14)against the Vikings. Come on, Minnesota, don't get in the way of history: make sure you crush them this time.

I'm probably not going to be able to catch the Vikings game (saves me having to sit through three hours of the gayest uniform in the league!). Might get a chance to record it, but depends on it being one of the six games shown here, and of those the three that are on the actual channel and not through the interactive service... Useless bastards.

Wow, I was torn about what I wanted to happen at the end there. I had made a prediction with some of the guys at work that the Lions were so bad that they would have to somehow beat the Vikings and the Packers to put them out of contention for the first round pick.

That come from ahead loss was everything I've come to expect from them. 0-13, baby! I'm going to say that the next two will be easy losses putting them at 0-15. I am not sure about GB, though, but I have faith in the Lions ability to not win.

I sorta hope nobody gifts them a game. It'll be interesting to see a team not win one game.

As for tomorrow night, it'll be a close game or a blowout by the Bucs like the first game. I think/ hope the Panthers pull it out though. Delhomme will have to play one of his better games and the offensive line will have to step it up big time. And the defense will have to play like they did at the beginning of the season, not like they have the last three or four games. It won't be pretty in any case.

What are your thoughts about the game?
