So back on EvAv and as Karak I am sure a ton of you knew my love for many board games and all kind of tabletop games.
But I figured I would see how many of you play Heroscape.
My lord what a great game.
Lets start with the most flexible board you can imagine...one you create. With 4 expansions Ice, Lava, City, and Forest you are set. The hexes fit together perfectly. So well in fact that making overhangs and even slightly sloping bridges and such can be done with ease.
And the minatures. Painted very well for massed produced gaming. Well done. Characters of all kinds. Robots, ninja's mystics, Superheros' hell...just about everyone.
The rules. I mean simple. Their advanced is simple. Even my girlfriend loves it. Each expansion comes with a motley crue of well painted dudes and dudettes ready to wreak havoc. I have yet to find someone who does not think this game is the bees knees.
If you get a chance I highly recommend it...its is so choice.

Yes they have always been attractive around xmas when they go 1/2 off ... I have yet to convince my better half that it would be fun to play together. She thinks they are kid toys.

I guess I would need to know why she thinks they are kid toys when they are usually in the boardgame sections next to risk and chess and so forth.
Is it the minatures? Anyway. YOu could always go to the website and look at the mini's and if you find some she may like show them to her?

I wish the Heroscape stuff was a slightly smaller scale, i.e. 28mm. The bases and poses are just a little too big to fit in with my current miniatures collection.

Heroscape is awesome. I have a few master sets and quite a few booster packs, much more than a man my age should have.

You might be surprised by who likes this game man. Try it out with a couple people who like..risk, monopoly. Anything where give and take is the order of the day.

We bought this the day it hit shelves (I had been tracking it for some time on BGG (http://www.boardgamegeek.com)), and we played one game. It was fun, but set up can be a bitch, the game will never ever fit back in the box it came in, and I'm lazy.
Other than that, though, I would still recommend it. Especially if you have enough room to leave it set up at all times so you can get games going quicker.

Wait...Heroscape's set up? It's like 4 minutes. What the hell. That's like the fastest set up I have ever seen in a game where you can do it yourself?

This looks like it would be right up my alley, but the problem is the guy I would play this with lives far away? How webcam friendly would the game be to play?

Really? You set it up that quickly? It took us a while to look at the diagrams and put the proper pieces in the proper places for the given scenario. Do you just do random set ups? Maybe that would be quicker.

Shit I see what you mean.
Ya the scenerio ones are just for people who have never played games before. Like my ma or something;)
We have 4 people go round robin. And sometimes we purposfully allow only 5 seconds per tile and make that a game. But ya it is maybe 4 minutes to 6 minutes if we use the expansion tiles.

Yea, I wasn't really faulting the game because I'm sure it's my fault that I'm lazy and never pulled it back out again after our first game. I also chalk it up to the fact that there just isn't enough time anymore to actively participate in all of my hobbies. I still look at the new boosters of figures at WalMart and think of how cool they look, but I know I would probably never get around to playing.

Then do as I was saying in another thread. Try the game Pox Nora. Its not a boardgame but its an excellent game for the PC that mimics much of what we like about heroscape and can be played single.

I think Ranger43 and i are gonna give this game a go over webcam sometime. It may bomb horribly, but it would be nice to be playing miniature gaming again.
Karek could you tell me about your experiences with Pox nora? I used to love playing Magic Online, but I dig miniature gaming much more. I found your thead and am reading it now. This seems like something i could get into, as long as they are a reputable company.

I see that you are already getting it.
My opinion is it just keeps getting better. Its now got solo play which puts it on a whole new level for me. I enjoy it. You can play for some time without purchasing anything else. When rules updates occur you can reset runes that are effected so you don't get left behind.
I love it as you can tell.

I like Heroscape, but at times it feels a little too simple. It's nice that you can play a game without having to have a rulebook in you hand, but the games tend to be pretty similar each time. We've started making up new rules every game just to keep things interesting.

That was the entire idea. They basically went and playtested for over a year trying to dumb down games with extreme complexity(warhammer, terrain issues(mageknight) and painting issues and came up with Heroscape.
But I see what you mean.
I am trying to think what you mean by make up rules? What does that mean exactly?

Mostly just stuff like limiting what types of figures each player can use, deploying your armies in waves, making up new scenarios, stuff like that. Nothing too drastic.

I forgot I had an account on Pox Nora...only problem is that now that I've logged in, it keeps telling me my runes are out of date. I can't locate where to resolve that for the life of me.

Yea. It didn't clarify that the ones with hourglasses next to their names had to be updated. Almost all of my runes had that on them, and you have to clear them one at a time...such a pain in the ass. Why don't they just have a "reset all cards" option?

I spent maybe 2-3 hours trying to do this myself. And all mine needed reseting.
Man I love the game though. I have to fight the want to play it at work. I just think its so well done.
Back on Topic.
We played a game of HeroQuest this weekend with the advanced rules had an incredible time.
Then we moved to Heroscape(I have dups of every terrain set) and made a 2 table game. 4 random armies and 2 chosen. And I played the bad guys with the others trying to kill me.
12 hours later they finally won. Little bastards. I almost had them. I love Heroscape...it seems so balanced. One of the players had The Hulk from the Marvel version and took down my last Minataur. It was literally down to the wire.
'Amazing time.

You have to watch out if you start mixing Marvel with the other sets. Those guys can be overpowering. My neighbor would always beat me when he used Iron Man (even when I used Spidey). I was finally able to defeat him when I chose Dr. Doom and rolled for Mind Control 17 and took control of his Iron Man. It still came down to the wire but this was the turning point of the war. Though looking back, I chose my armies based on units I wanted to use and not necessarily as an "army".

Really? I will have to check. We have been doing it with no problems. What you described would probably be considered balanced and back and forth in our group but I see what you mean.
I FOR SURE pick what I think looks cool. I usually die because I pick the guys that look cool who can only attack on monday or something ha.

I'm sure a more experienced player than I can play regular vs. Marvel and have no problem. They usually seem to me to have a high hp/flying/special ability combination that are hard to counter. Usually high point cost as well though. Course I probably just suck. :)

Oh I will say one thing. The Hulk can fucking move.
And does more damage as he gets hurt like Abom does. So I placed my characters on the downside slope until the player leapt in for melee. Then I circled around and shot from +1 higher land and auto damage parry characters.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm probably going to get Heroscape and the Marvel set this Christmas for my kids.
Oh hell...who am I kidding? It's for me, dammit! But they'll enjoy it too. Right? I hope so! :)

I posted in the other thread as well. Just a word. The original sets come with a bit more guys to play with...probably because its not Marvel. So you may want to go with the original if you just get one. Sounds like you are getting two but just in case.

I like the Rise of the Valkyrie set the best. The variation of figures I like better. Having said that, I have two ROTV, two Swarm of the Marrow and a Marvel set. I LOVE PLASTIC!

Just had a bunch of Heroscape stuff handed over to me for free, posted about it on 4chan's /tg:
So, a friend of my dad's has a son who was into Heroscape, but lost interest, and decided to get rid of it. They just handed all of their figures and terrain over to me. I have the basic starting set (I think that is what it is, anyway, it comes with a manual, lots of terrain, and lots of figures), an expansion set called Fortress of the Archyrie and a whole lot of various figures that they bought along with that stuff.
I've never really looked into this game, as when I was into collectible miniatures I mostly played Mage Knight. I haven't been into that since the first MK expansion, but since all of this stuff was free, I thought it'd be good to have anyway. Is it a pretty fun game to play? Does it have much of a following around these parts?

I really love to play HeroScape and that fact all of that was just handed to you like that is really sweet. To really enjoy it, you need to have someone that's into it as well. There is alot of strategy involved (if you play by the rules and use order markers) and a win can be very satisfying. Even a loss can be fun because there are usually some really memorable moments (narrow escapes, great dice rolls, terrible dice rolls). Building the maps by itself is kind of fun in a Lego sort of way.
I really like the ruleset. They're simple (of course questions always come up about specific circumstances) and it's flexible enough that you can set up any kind of scenario you want. You can do just straight up kill 'em all deathmatch type or have victory conditions or do an RPG type thing. Completely awesome. One thing I like that initially turned me off about the game is the wide variation of figures. Just wish there was some way to play people across the country as I got my brother-in-law into it as well.

Been playing this weekly with my brother. To spice up the game i have been creating some custom terrain pieces and units. Here is a example of one of them

Did this happen IIntrude?
I wish they'd bring this game to XBLA/PSN - it's perfect for it. User-created maps, multiplayer games...it's a natural for DLC as well.
