View Full Version : Monday Blues - What did you play?

Monday. Boo. It's cold and I don't feel the need to leave the comfort of my blankets however my internal alarm clock is buzzing "get up you lazy ass". Not even the short week (for those in the U.S. anyway) isn't scaring my Monday Blues away. Bah to Monday.

Some decent gaming done. I managed to get to Chapter 3 in Mirror's edge without breaking my controller. The platforming elements are still excellent. I love the parts where you are running or just trying to find where to go next especially when being chased. When I die over and over in those sequences it's not to bad. When i'm dying over and over due to stupid combat...not so much. I'm still trying to understand why i'm so forgiving of this game. Most games I would of lost patience by now.

I did play a bit of Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. I wish I wasn't trying to play when so tired. It's hard to game when your eyes are closing ;). At least I made it to the first save point...otherwise it was a weekend filled with writing papers and looking down the barrel of those deadlines.

So what did you play?

I'll tell you what I just got done playing: cleaning up my vomit for the second time in five hours. I seriously hope there isn't a third 8-(.

As far as gaming; for some reason I went digging in Steam and played an hour or so of Counter-Strike 1.6, and then I played a lot of Team Fortress 2. It never gets old.

Tomb Raider. Loving it. It has more of that "what the fuck do I do now?" feel to it than any of the recent games which tended to lead you by the nose.

Fallout 3, 14 hours of it. Can't wait to play some more.

Fable II. Honestly, around 24 hours worth over the four days the GF was gone. And I loved each minute. That is, when my 360 wasn't giving me disc read errors, which I know is the harbinger of the RRoD.

I just now got the Spire and man can I take punishment. I love this game.

I had some bad gaming ADD over the weekend, so I played a bit of a few things.

Burnout Legends (PSP) I was in the mood for a racing game and this scratched that itch just fine. I've got quite a bit more to play in the game, it's surprising how much there is to do for a portable racer. It gets pretty damn hard, though, but that's a good thing.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee (PSP) I've had the game for damn near 3 years and I'm still unlocking crap. 91% on items now and only 1 character left to get. Then I can move on and get the sequel. :p

Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP) I'm about 14 hours in and enjoying it despite the boring story. The character progression is addictive and the battle system is fun, so that makes up for it. I still need to get into the crafting.

Zack & Wiki (Wii) Man, I love this game. Great style and fun puzzles. Well, at least in the beginning and middle, towards the end the puzzles get retarded. And by retarded I mean that you absolutely have to do things in the order that the developers want you to, something that is rarely clear. Annoying, but the game is still very good.

Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) I really need to play more of this. I got through one battle and a lot of backstory (reading the character profiles, glossary, starting the stuff with the news woman). Great style, and now I really want to do more skirmishes to be able to afford the new orders from the guy in the graveyard.

Persona (PS1) Yes, the original game. I popped it in for about half an hour just out of curiousity, it's the game I plan on playing once I'm finished with VC. Yeah, I'm going to love the game once I actually get around to it. I've, shockingly, never played a MegaTen game before, as much as I'm into JRPGs, so this should be fun. The awful translation is actually a positive, at least now, it's just so nostalgic. That, and the first person dungeon segments just scream old school. Good stuff, and I can't wait to get to it.

Also, thanks to the free music, I now need to buy Linger In Shadows, that music is fantastic.

Wow, I played a lot more than normal this weekend. :) Too bad I couldn't fit in any FFXI, but that'll change this week.

I spent Friday night playing Left 4 Dead, and again for a while on Saturday. Had a blast in both co-op and versus modes. Playing as the infected is a lot of fun!!

I also spent quite a bit of time with Eets. I've beaten nearly all of the puzzles now, and I'm shooting for 100% completion.

Finally, I bought the first season of Sam & Max on Steam. I didn't actually play any of them, but I'm excited to try them out.

I had a Wii day on saturday, played Mario Galaxy, Dragon Quest Swords, Link to the Past, Mario 64, Lost Winds and MegaMan 9. Sunday wasanother attempt at the asteroids section of Dead Space, some Mother 3, Penny Arcade: OtRSPoD 2 and Final Fantasy VI on the GBA.

Now it's monday and it's back to WoW and Fallout 3 for a few days. And Chrono Trigger for the podcast, woo!

I actually liked the characters in that game, (although, Lost Odyssey is basically my first jrpg other than pokemon).

This weekend I finished up the GoW2 campaign, as well as finally getting off my lazy ass to set up the 5.1 surround sound in my dorm room. Only three more days of classes before I'm out for Thanksgiving break!

Lots of Left 4 Dead. Vs. mode is amazing. Except when you are in the APC, about to escape and the Infected has a Tank rush right into the APC and stomps on your face, that sucks. It's hilarious, but it sucks.

Also, some Fallout 3 and Geometry Wars.

Quite a bit of Left4Dead. I've been playing the campaign on Normal so I guess I won't be seeing too many of you gaming gods in-game. I also played some single player just to get the maps figured out and because I had previously been matched up with some real dickwads.

Played a lot of "Taste the Beaujolais Nouveau" on Saturday night! It had a lot of side quests with wonderful cheeses, prosciutto, smoked salmon and many other scrumptious delicacies!

Sunday the sun came out so I went on a Four Hour Motorcycle Ride through the foothills of the Cascade Mountains! Cold, but beautiful! Great views of Mt. Baker and the North Cascades. Had a pint of Sierra Nevada Black Butte Porter when I got to one of my favorite pubs in Snohomish. Mmmm! I like those dark heavy beers on a cold day! This was the first time I've really been out on the bike since my shoulder surgery. It ached a bit every now and then, but it feels fine this morning. I have my last physical therapy appointment this afternoon!

More Left4Dead when I got home from the ride. ;)

I played through Mirror's Edge, on hard, without ever shooting a gun in one sitting on Saturday morning. That was cool. I also played a fair bit of Fallout 3 and Disgaea DS, both excellent games that are massive in scope.

I installed and started The Witcher EE yesterday, and it is much better than I remember it being, and I liked it the first time around. The load times are much better, but I still had to crank it down to low on most settings to get an acceptible performance. If I am remembering right, there is considerably more story this time around, like the intro section was a lot longer than I remember.

My wife and I went up to the mountains and stayed in a cabin with my family, so there wasn't a whole lot of gaming on. I did get in quite a bit of Galcon on my iPhone though (easily the best game on the iPhone by the way). We also played a lot of Settlers of Catan.

I got Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 for my birthday though, and managed to dip into both of them a little bit Sunday evening. So far, both are fantastic and I'm having a hard time deciding which to focus on first. At the moment I'm leaning towards Fallout 3, at least until I can get a headset for my PC.

Oops, I should have waited for this thread instead of posting in the weekend gamer thread at 3 am. Quick recap:

Finished up the Call of Duty: World at War campaign (basically Call of Duty 4: World War II). Fun game, and I enjoyed Gary Oldman as Sgt. Reznov.

Helped a few friends get through 50 Horde waves on Blood Drive on Gears 2, then we tried it on Insane late last night and got our asses handed to us starting at wave 10. There were only four of us at the time though (and I was slightly handicapped because I kept accidentally using CoD controls and fucking up). Will probably try to get through it on Insane again soon, but with five people instead.

Tomb Raider: Underworld [PC]
Played this on Saturday morning and got through most of the first level and really enjoyed myself. Game looks great with everything cranked.

Left4Dead[PC]
Played some splitscreen co-op through No Mercy on Saturday as I introduced my friend to the game (and tried to convince him to buy it for the 360). Lots of fun, though he's always a little too selfish when playing co-op games. Then got some Versus mode in for a little bit on Sunday evening. First time playing Versus and it took me a bit to get used to the different creatures. Decided to rage quite after seeing enough texts from a racist kid.

Kingdom of Kieflings [360]
Wow, what a very interesting and relaxing game that just draws you in. One of those great city building game that makes time just fly by...because you always just want to do "one more thing".

Call of Duty 5: World At War [360]
Bought this on Saturday afternoon with the intent of couch co-opting with my buddy, but we ended up just playing Left4Dead, so this game is still in it's shrink wrap :o

Simcity: Creator[DS]
Okay...so, I traded in Populous and I wanted a city building game for the DS...played about 20 minutes of it last night on the first stage...and it hasn't really drawn me in yet. It's much like the original Simcity for the DS, but it seems to have more of a mission structure (though Freeplay is an option).

The WTFDIDN part of TR is the best part. I know some would say we are nuts for wanting that in a game but in TR it makes sense. This is the very reason I like Mirror's Edge so much. Except when i'm being shot at with no chance of survival...maybe my reward over the long weekend may be to crack open TR...

Well, I stated on Friday that I was going to sit down and play a little bit of Oblivion after my 3rd restart.

I took the advice of some people here, and pretty much left the main quest after closing the first Oblivion gate (which is about as far as I got on my last 2 saves).

I'm actually enjoying the game more now, and worked my way through quite a few of the Mage's Guild quests.

Got some CoD 4 (online) action in last night too.

It was pretty sweet. I had fallen asleep way too early Friday night, trying to nap before going out. So when I woke up saturday morning at like 4 I knew I had to do something. So I decided I would try to play straight through Mirror's Edge.

It only took till like 10, but I had already played through once on normal. I still died quite a bit, especially since I was determined to not even shoot a weapon.

My friend thought I was putting him on, but if achievements are good for anything it is proving that you are the man.

I didn't play much, to be honest. I played like, three rounds of Gears 2 on Friday. I played a bit of versus mode in Left4Dead (which I didn't like because I didn't know the campaign and the other team knew it extremely well), and a couple games in my NCAA dynasty.

On the plus side, I did manage to fix my friends computer. And by fix, I mean reformat. But whatever. The computer geeks of our group couldn't fix the damn thing, but I can?

Sorry, I guess I was very tired when I wrote that. SW:TFU is def. not a platformer, but it still was a gem of a game.
Off the top of my head:
Good things:
- It had a very well written story-line.
- Awesome gameplay (I thought the various use of the force mechanics was good)
- Levels seemed to be the right length

Bad things:
- Difficulty level is not smooth. One of the bosses took me more than two hours of tries and in the end, I ended up just lowering the difficulty.
- Ending seemed a bit abrupt.

This weekend I finally finished up No More Heroes. It's really a love letter to video games, taking style to the extreme. More Wii games should take a cue from NMH in how to implement waggle - it was enough to add to the experience but didn't over do it.

See, I think they didn't implement the force powers enough in different ways, for all their talk of physics engines, the environments were fairly sterile, unimaginative and stark aside from the odd piles of crates.

There are odd glimpses of interest, like freezing enemies in carbonite and using the huge lazers in the tie fighter factory but they just didn't do enough of that sort of thing.

I was so hoping Spigot would of made it in here by now to see your post. The man rarely states a "dislike" for a game. This was one. I still want to see his opinion of your "gem" of a game. I mean to each their own...I have plenty of games I love that no one would touch. But I like your reasons you gave to like it. I seriously should rent it at least. But it's a game that some really does divide people.

I spent most of the weekend playing either Mirror's Edge (which I spend 85% of the time adoring and 15% of the time wishing I could just snap the disc into tiny pieces) and Lich King, with a smattering of A Kingdom For Keflings and The Last Remnant thrown in for good measure.

I didn't play nearly as much as I wanted to though, as I worked the overnight shift on Friday night, fell asleep at 10pm on Saturday and was dealing with unruly kids most of Sunday. Oh well.

This is my experience to a T. Glad i'm not alone...but that's the weird "liking" of this game. You get past that "I want to break this disc" part and feel the need to move on...Exactly. The brilliance of the game when it's not making you want to smash it into tiny pieces is what keeps me from just taking it out and throwing it across the room. And if I actually decided to shoot people, well, I'm sure the game would be a lot less annoying. But my god... The next Mirror's Edge game had better not have any guns or at least have a lot less gunplay or I'll yell... AT YOU![/quote]

I know that The Thief games (at least the third one) is on Steam. With all of the Eidos games on there, you'd think Anachronox would be on the list too, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Yes. Yes you do. I command you to go forth and play all of those games and let the good times flow.

Yes sir! Just as soon as I find the time. :p

My backlog is so long now I'll never get through it all.

Fallout 3 took up the majority of my time. I really hate that you can't kill specific characters.

My backlog is so long now I'll never get through it all.Just adopt my philosophy on books and games. As long as you still have a few to play or read, you can't die. That helps me justify why I keep spending more money on books and games I'll never get around to finishing...

And as long as you have unpainted Warhammer figs, you can never die! Between my books, my games and my wargaming miniatures, I'm going to live forever!

It is good to be The Buddha! :D

Did I really miss this thread? How the hell did I do that?

From Gamefly I played and beat CoD4 and Bourne Conspiracy in the span of a day. Both way too short, but enjoyable. Also played Fallout 3. I've started on the main quest finally. 42 hours in!

Oh, and I also beat Weapon of Choice on Hard. I took the path through the High Trees, which appears to be one of three paths a player can choose. I only lost one operative in the carnage, which surprised me, as I entered the hard difficulty mode just to see how tough it would be. And, I'll say it again, death brushing is awesome. If Konami ever makes another Contra game, they should steal this mechanic. Death brushing is definitely the best thing to happen to the Contra-style action genre in the past decade. I also love the weapons of choice, but I don't know if Contra would be compatible with that kind of hard-wiring.

If you haven't picked up any Community Games yet, and are curious about the service, you owe it to yourself to check out Weapon of Choice. It's amazing! :)

What's bad is when you buy the starter set of Chaos Warriors and have to quit when you start painting the red parts. I wish I had the time to paint minis because they are pretty cool. I did paint some damn fine looking axes if I do say so, though. Heroscape is much easier. Just unwrap the package.

Monday blues? Ha! I have the whole week off! I'm still gaming right now! HA!

OK, I'm done being a high and mighty prick. I played a ton of L4D this weekend, and I am playing some Fable II this week as well. It's amazing how much shit you can get done in a game when you have a metric shit ton of free time. :D

That's a great philosophy to have! Time to whip out the credit card. :D

I'm really hoping to get a lot of gaming in tomorrow night and Thanksgiving Day. I'm actually going to be home alone, since I have to work Friday, so I'll have plenty of time to play some games.

Ok, so not to confuse those who need magical breadcrumbs...I'll try to remember to link Weekend Gamer to Monday Blues. I don't think Monday Blues qualifies as news...

I was not taken anything for granted from my nemesis ;) Now stay out of this thread! :pAm I your nemesis or your stalker or the little brother you never wanted? I'm unnerved by the last option, as I'm the eldest in my family and it feels weird to have an older brother I didn't ask for...

I'm down with either of the first two options though.
