View Full Version : Half the Internet is down for me

Tried getting to CoG, Yahoo, GoDaddy, Amazon, slashdot, Penny Arcade - the browser just sits there loading. I can get to Google, Hotmail, News.com, downforeveryoneorjustme.com, and a few other sites, and they seem to work fine. It's not like page loads work intermittently, just that most sites just can't be reached.
Internet help desk support doesn't open until noon. Was wondering if anyone else was having issues. It's probably just a local problem (a break in the Tubes somewhere), but who knows.
Oh, and I could only get here through a proxy.

I had something similar happen when my last router died. Not sure what caused it to block off half the sites I visit and not the other half.
Sorry I can't be more help than that. You've probably checked your router already.

I cycled power to my DSL modem and router. Haven't tried the direct-hookup to the modem yet...
I tried accessing a couple sites w/ the PS3 browser and got the same results as with my PC.

Try a direct hookup. Just to make sure. Eliminate the smaller stuff first and go from there while waiting on more info.

I can run a tracert to yahoo.com. There's one point where it gets a Request timed out, then moves on, but it gets that same timeout when I do a tracert to sites that work, too.

Also not a "hosts" file issue. And I tried "ipconfig /flushdns" earlier.

Have you changed your DNS service? I used to get that problem all the time till I pointed my router to OpenDNS.

I haven't changed it, nor have I set it to anything specific.
Only thing I've changed on the router is opening certain ports for games / port forwarding for the same. It's probably been over a year since I've had to change anything.

This was happening to me when I was using FF. After I switched to chrome, I never had another problem.

Could have been a hick-up in the DNS servers.

This was most likely the problem. Looks like your ISP fixed it before you could call them and be angry ;)

Kind of helps narrow down issues.I was actually able to use that site. The only site I tried that was down for me and for DFEOJM was Amazon...but I think it just can't check Amazon correctly. I realized that not everyone everywhere was having these problems, but was wondering if maybe it was affecting more than just my ISP.

A yellow or red number indicates a problem between those 2 "tier 1" ISP providers. If there's issues between 2 network providers, it can appear to you that half the internet is down.

That's a great little chart.
