View Full Version : Bad movies you love

Title says it all. What movies do you love that everyone else seems to hate, or got bad/mediocre reviews? I'm not talking about movies that are so "bad they're good," but movies that you just legitimately like while others...don't.
Myself?
The Saint (Val Kilmer's remake of the 60's TV show)
The Mask Of Zorro (The first Antonio Banderas film)
The Man in the Iron Mask
To be fair, all are movies I grew up with, so there is a sort of nostalgic thing going on there, but I can watch any of them and still like them, despite my friends condemning them.
What crappy movies do you like?

Dude, Mask of Zorro is an awesome flick. Extraordinarily smoking hot Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins whipping candles out while sipping brandy.
As for me, I love the animated Transformers movie, The Last Starfighter, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (aka the first one), 2010: The Year We Made Contact...
Can't really think of more off the top of my head.

I have an unholy love for terrible 50s sci-fi movies, and some good ones too. And all the old Godzilla movies, too. My favorite old gem:

I think it is criminal how 2010 gets no love. A lot of GREAT actors doing a good job, great special effects for the time (hell the aerobraking scene blows away many current movies) and a great story.
I don't know if it can be considered a bad movie but I really like The Ballad of Cable Hogue. It's one of those movies that I watch and can't figure out why I like it. I think it comes down to Jason Robards and Stella Stevens. Without those two, I'm not sure I would sit through a movie about a guy that finds a water hole in the desert regardless of the symbolism.

First off, the animated Transformers is awesome. Anyone that doesn't tear up just a little during the Last Ride of Optimus Prime deserves to be shot.
Highlander: The Source is a recent addition to the pantheon of movies so utterly terrible they become awesome. Just the one moment where the bad guy yells out "HI JOE!" while flying backwards from said Joe hitting him with a truck. That and Adrian Paul. Lord of the B Movie.

Star Wars Episoded IV and VI. Anyone who says that they are not bad, is fooling themselves. Dialogue is horrible.

Oh god... I love me some bad movies:
- Pretty much anything by Paul W.S. Anderson
- Dungeons and Dragons - Jeremy Irons is fucking Awesome in this.
- Waterworld
- The Postman
- Wing Commander
- Get Carter (remake)
- Godzilla (1998) - hell anything by Emmerich (especially Emmerich/Devlin stuff)
- Twister
- Masters of the Universe
- Krull (but not Hawk the Slayer - that's Rubbish!)
That's probably enough for now.
EDIT: - The 13th Warrior!
Starship Troopers, and entirely too many to list.

I wouldn't say "love," but I enjoy watching these not-very-good movies, every now and then when they're on TV:
Super Mario Bros.
Waterworld (as others have mentioned)
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (maybe some would disagree, but I've never thought of it as a "good" movie)
And basically any movie on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

God I love Krull. There's something about a movie that you first watched when you were extremely young that makes it a fond memory forever.
Red Sonja is another good one. Probably the least known Schwarzenegger movie out there.
EDIT: Holy shit, apparently there's a remake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sonja#Film) of Red Sonja in the works!!!
A remake of Red Sonja is currently in the works. It is currently in pre-production and very little has been decided on. It will be produced by Robert Rodriguez, directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (with considerable participation of Rodriguez), and actress Rose McGowan will portray Red Sonja. Kulan Gath will also play a major role in the movie. The release date was recently reporteded to be late 2009 with a teaser poster being released which shows Red Sonja with her sword atop of a pile of skulls.

I'm disappointed in you all.
I'm actually a collector of terrible movies however. I just love laughing at them. So much so that some movies I have a hard time deciding whether or not it's a terrible movie that's awesome, or just an awesome movie.
My recent favorite has been Ghost Rider. It is so awful that I just can't stop watching it. Nicholas Cage is a saint to those of us who collect terrible movies.

Nicholas Cage is a saint to those of us who collect terrible movies.
He does seem to be drawn to scripts that could have been written to 5 year olds.
When I was young, I really enjoyed Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 (although 1 was better), Waterworld, Mario Bros, and Kevin and Perry Go Large. Heck, I enjoyed Street Fighter the first and only time I watched it.

God I love Krull. There's something about a movie that you first watched when you were extremely young that makes it a fond memory forever.
Word. I actually went to Krull on opening night, instead of seeing another little movie called Return of the Jedi. ;) Though in the spirit of fulldisclosure: I did see a sneak preview of Jedi the night before thanks to winning a contest at a local radio station - i was the envy of every kid in school!
Red Sonja is another good one. Probably the least known Schwarzenegger movie out there.
EDIT: Holy shit, apparently there's a remake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sonja#Film) of Red Sonja in the works!!!
Arnold HATES Red Sojna. The studio pissed him off royally when they marketed it as an Arnold film and shafted Brigitte Nielsen. He also once joked in an interview that when his kids misbehave, he locks them in their bedrooms and makes them watch Red Sonja 20 times... Talk about tough love!
Being a Conan/Robert E. Howard nut - I had to own it... :)
I'm interested in what Rodriguez will do with it, but i gotta say, the concept so far ain't blowin my skirt up.
I would like to add the Sci-fi channel movies. If I am home Saturday night I like watching them. They are so bad, the are fun to watch.

Big Trouble in Little China bad? May Lo Pan strike you down! But I'm sure Jack Burton could take your criticism in his stride, after all he'd just say ''Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
As for mine, I put forward No Retreat, No Surrender. It was bad, but I love the fact that the kid could beat Van Damme with the help of the ghost of a Bruce Lee lookalike.
EDIT: I also bar anyone from mentioning any other Van Damme movies in this thread. There are no other bad Van Damme movies, the scale only varies from Damme Good to Van Damme-Tastic

I'm seeing a lot of votes for movies that were intentionally "bad" or at least tongue-in-cheek about it. I don't think they should qualify since they actually accomplished what they set out to do. To me, a truly bad movie has to take itself completely seriously.
Example: Airplane! (the first one) is a "good" movie because the folks that made it wanted it to be cheesy, lame, and tasteless - and yet still be pretty funny. Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, or Scary Movie 3 are seriously "bad" movies because they tried to do the same but failed at actually being funny.
Yor: Hunter From The Future is another good example of a bad movie. It's deadly sincere, but ridiculously low-budget and hammy.
Mansquito is a great bad movie. Awful premise. Bad acting. Low budget. Deliciously entertaining.

There are so many bad movies that I love... I'll try and list a few that aren't already mentioned, but know that Waterworld and Crank are both very high on my list.
How about the Scorpion King? Oh man, the scene at the end with the eyebrow raise... I rewound that and watched it like 10 times in a row. I don't know what was so goddamn funny about it, but something sure was.
Kickboxer. Really anything with Van Damme is good in my book, but Kickboxer stands above the rest in my book (yes, even above Bloodsport).

I worked at Fluor during the time they were filming. Sylvester was a prick from what I hear.
That weird overhang building is modeled after the USC football helmet. Fluor Sr. was an SC grad and he'd take his helicopter from the helipad on that property the the sc football games, land on the field, and then find his seat.

Low budget kung-fu movies. Like the old, grainy, poorly dubbed ones. It just makes it better to me somehow by ramping up the cheesiness.
Also Highlander movies, the tv show, anything related. They may not be very good in the critical sense but you have immortals vying for power, swordfights to the decapitation, and Queen.

Rutger Hauer

You're bashing Yor?! Look, nothing with that kind of jammin' soundtrack can be called bad, YOR'S WORLD HE'S THE MAN; YOR'S WORLD HE'S THE MAN!

Indeed. There's something about that first moment in Jurassic Park when they see the dinosaurs for the first time which was unfortunately never really captured again. I guess it's impossible to capture again because it was the same for the audience, you can't get that 'wow'.

Ex-Blockbuster employee here, and yeah, you rent ALOT of movies. 5 per week, though that also included game rentals. Do they still do that?
Alot of these movies mentioned only had one copy in the store, so it would be something like 2 weeks until it came back (Blockbuster had instituted the "No Late Fees" policy, so people would hold onto stuff for a while), and then go right back out.

It's just that it's like the funniest movie to me as time moves on. But Idiocracy?Iddiocracy is funny, and I suppose in that sense it's a good movie, but some of the jokes seem so...Beverly Hills Chiwawa to me. Yadadaimsayin?

There're lots of empirical ways of determining if a movie is bad (poor editing, lousy script, shoddy acting, craptacular directing, etc.) Perfect example: Event Horizon. There were a lot of things to like about it (good idea, director did a good job of conveying suspense, Sam Neil and Larry Fishburne were good in it), but in the end it was a bad movie because the 2nd half of the movie was complete piss.
I may like the movie because the first half did a good job, but recognize that the move was bad because it didn't live up to its potential.
Wow, that slipped under the radar.
Have you seen it?
I have. It's awesome!
ly bad. :D

I'm going to have to throw in my vote for Ladyhawke (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089457/)
This was my Mom's favorite movie when I was a kid. I shit you not.
Now her favorite movie is Tremors.
My Mom has the worst taste... ever.

Mine is probably Biodome. I love that movie so much - I can almost recite it word for word.
ASSUME THE POSITION!!!!
You know... it's just too easy to keep coming up with more and more bad movies I love. For instance, my original list? Didn't include gems such as Screamers (Peter Weller, woot!), Kung Pow (So dumb it makes my brain hurt), and let's face it... anything with Arnold in it is a bad movie, but ooooohhhh so good!

One of my wife's favorites! I am smart enough to embrace a romantic story that gets my wife all worked up.
She loved the idea of Rutger Hauer in all leather; loved the sounds that he made when he moved.
Needless to say, I took advantage of that when I got dressed in my motorcycle leathers. :D

Starship Troopers 3 ain't bad actually. Ok it is bad, but pretty entertaining if you go in realizing that it's still a low-budget straight-to-video sequel not directed by Verhoven. But by any standards it is WAY better than ST2. ST2 was just a horrible waste of time.

I have the franchise pack of that series.
I also have that. It was an impulse buy, and without myeven knowing that the 3rd or 4th existed.

Does it count if the movie was purposefully bad? Because I loved Snakes On A Plane.

"Wayne's World 2" was so poor in quality compared to the 1st one yet I'll watch it.
Maybe it's b/c of Christopher Walken

My friend absolutely loved it. Every time I tell him what a fucking mess that script was, he tells me that I was watching it wrong.
But it wasn't a complete waste of time because of Imax.

Doesn't Kid Rock get owned in that movie too?
Any chance to see Kid Rock get owned is usually worth it, fictionally or not.

Idk, I've never thought of Tremors as a "bad movie". Just an awesome one.

Eh, I don't think Joe Dirt qualifies as a bad movie. I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy it, it's cast isn't bad, and it's one of the few occasions where David Spade has his shit together.
