View Full Version : Weekend Gaming - What's in your Queue?

It's baaaaack. Yes, another Friday where once again the anticipation of rejoicing begins as we anticipate another (or so we hope) the weekend filled with lots of gaming. Well that's my idea of a rejoiced filled weekend. Fill in what you desire for your own weekend if it can't be all about games. Then I would ask...why not??
So rejoicers, what are you playing? Some Left4Dead? Maybe the last note in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts? Or maybe you are the other Tomb Raider fan besides myself, planning to continue the adventures of Lara? And before the Wii fans track me down, let's not forget Animal Crossing. Creating a town or four maybe? I know Ms. Claus will since i'll be once again writing papers with deadlines looming closer. As always, the slacker I am, I have some gaming plans:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/fitbabits/Logos/71oihdd.jpg
Tomb Raider Underworld: The game that was a must have for me. If I was only allowed to buy one game this is mine. Outside of //.Hack, series, no other series I'm as such a fanboy about. I proudly state I have played them all, finished them all and yes I know this makes my mental state challenged. We all have that one game. This is mine. I am trying to tell myself, no I can't play it since I have to much work to do and I need to save, so I can savor it for after the semester. So far it's still in the shrink wrap. Can I persevere? Yeah, I don't think so either...
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/fitbabits/Logos/mirrorsedgeit4.png
Mirror's Edge: I loved the demo. I found it to be very TR like. Originally a Ms. Claus game that she wanted to play, I found it more appealing. How could I not if I found it to have elements of my favorite game? This might take the edge off of not playing TR. I just need something that can distract me just enough to get me some gaming time but not lose myself for hours yet. As long as I can save anywhere I will play this...
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/fitbabits/Logos/2278621636_e7db087e33.jpg
Left4Dead: Gamefly should have my copy of this in my hands today. Unless my unruly roommates have misplaced my mail again. I once found a GF game three days after it was suppose to arrive in a pile of laundry. This game wasn't something I originally was excited about but as the game got closer to release with so many on here talking about it...the chance to flee with friends from zombies sounded to good to pass up. This forum has made me into a "online" gamer. I feel dirty :p.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/fitbabits/Logos/gears-of-war-2-logo.jpg
GOW2: I'm hoping to find some other Noobs of War online to play some Horde mode. Not sure how available I'll be but I'm going to try. I tend to think i'll be online for a limited amount of time but then suddenly two hours pass. Must resist so I can write papers, pass my classes so I can become employed next May...although I rather be online with the other Noobs....
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/fitbabits/Logos/castle_ooe_logo.jpg
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia: I finally got a chance to play this game this week. Not much at all but I at least took a peek. The game looked pretty sweet if you are a Castlevania fan. I felt myself being hooked already. This one will get some playing time for sure this weekend. It will keep me warm and happy as Ms. Claus builds her empire/town in Animal Crossing.
I still haven't sent back Dead Space. I made the mistake of reading the achievements list which I found so many of the achievements are easy to obtain. I am an achievement whore. This game really needs to go back. And I'm NOT playing Banjo-Kazooie - thank you Circuit City, since your financial problems have made it problematic keeping games in supply. Maybe for the best...I love BK to much to be able to put it down. Being obsessed with finding all the notes isn't a good thing when game playing time is lacking.
So what are you playing?

I'll probably be playing Etrian Odyssey 2, Fallout 3 and WAR.

Left 4 Dead will be the biggest time filler. I'll also be playing Chrono Trigger here and there. I've been watching Netflix streaming over Live, and fortunately, it is working much better than it had been initially. This is very watchable. As we speak, I'm seeing Dominion Tank Police for the first time in probably fifteen years.

Outside of my weekly review for our local paper, I haven't been putting in much game time. In fact I've found lately too much of my time has been wasted vegging out. So after I get back from the gym Saturday morning I promised myself I'd play at least an hour to 90 minutes of Dead Space.

Valkyria Chronicles is a sure bet, I've been going through withdrawals for the past few days since my TV has been out of commission (it was repaired yesterday).
I've been in the mood for a racing game the past few days, so since I'm too cheap to buy something new right now, I grabbed Burnout Legends for the PSP off of my shelf. I still have 2 car classes to go through in that and a ton of crash challenges, so that should keep me busy for a while. I almost forgot how great that game is, possibly the best portable racing game I've ever played.
I may play some FFXI, but that I'm not sure about, since I played it a lot over the course of the past week. I started leveling Samurai last Saturday to eventually sub to Warrior and I've gone from 10 to 28 from then til Wednesday. I may just do some meriting on SCH if nothing else if I can find the time.
Also, for some reason, I grabbed Brigandine for the PS1 off of my shelf. I'm not quite sure why, but I may actually play a bit of that this weekend too.
Left 4 dead, and possibly Rock Band 2, as it seems to be out today. Oh, and wether i want it or not, i'm going to play some Kingdom for keflings.. i just can't stay away.

Fallout 3 has taken over my video gaming time...I'll be scouring the wastes for lost treasures, wrongs to right, and really, really big guns.
I may also head to Northrend for a bit...but I'm finding it very hard to want to play anything other than Fallout right now.

I'll be playing quite a bit of Left 4 Dead on the PC this weekend. Can't wait to try out versus mode with my fellow COGers.
I might also dig into some of my older PC titles. I've been itching to play an RTS or possibly Dungeon Keeper.
Oh, and I'll be playing Eets as well. :p

Animal Crossing (http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa55/goodavatar/RUU_0016.jpg)
Rock Band
And the always fun, lets put our house back together after the LAN party game.
I've ripped and loaded a few PS games to my PSP since Sony will not get off of their ass and get them up on the PSN store.
I will probably tinker around with NCAA Mach Madness 2001 (once again, no college BB for PSP) and see if I can get into Persona 2. I'm thinking about ripping Command & Conquer Red Alert as well. I've got so many Playstation games this could go on forever. Funny, if Sony would have gotten their act together, I would have never modded my PSP and would be buying PS games off their store.
I will most likely continue the trial and error of loading PS games on the PSP until my copy of The Last Remnant arrives from GF tomorrow or early next week.
*edit - I will probably spend some time working on my spelling too since I seem to have forgotten how to spell certain words.

Need to get back into The Witcher. Been too busy the last couple of days.
It doesn't help that I picked up Left 4 Dead on Wednesday! I got home early from work yesterday and I thought I'd log on and play a couple quick rounds... 3 hours later, it's time to make dinner. I'm not a big multiplayer gamer, but this game rocks! I also have to assume that through the luck of the draw, I got some team mates that weren't total idiots! :D
Also going to a Beaujolais Nouveau Tasting party on Saturday night. Always a good time!

Lots of Far Cry 2 - it has been on the backburner for a bit while these other games have come out, but last night I played some more and remembered how tight the gameplay is. I've put 11 hours into it, 9 game days have passed, and I'm only 20% complete. That's a lotta game!
I'll also play some L4D and Gears, naturally, for my multiplayer chaos fix...and last, but not least, I've finally gotten into the meat of Valkyria Chronicles. What a fantastic game!

I'm going to make a last run at my NaNoWriMo novel. If I can get a little extra in during the weekend than I normally get in the evening after work, I should be pretty close to finishing, and should be done Monday or Tuesday. Dying to get back and do some TF2.

Ahh...Nouveau. I was just thinking yesterday that this may be the first year in awhile that I won't be picking any up. Probably the first time in 5 or 6 years.
I can't stop playing FIFA 2009. I don't know why. It still has some issues with player magnetism and stupid motion-capture animations going through while the ball is five yards away...but I can't stop. I must play more.
Also, Rock Band, Fable 2 and I really need to choose a game from the backlog and finish it up. Maybe Bioshock. I'm sure I was close to finished with it.

Let's see, I have so many games it's hard to decide. For some weird reason I've forsaken Fallout 3 for Gears of War PC. Not to say it's a better game, I just needed a wasteland break I think. I'll probably play both this weekend. Throw in some Left 4 Dead and I'm golden!

Damn I gotta get back to that. I love that freaking game, probably still my GOTY, even after Fallout 3. As good and deep as that game is, plus the fact that I am obsessed with it, Far Cry 2 still takes the cake in that it is just plain more fun to play than most anything else I have played this year.
Did anyone read the GameInformer review of that game. I know, thier reviews suck anyway, but that one was particularly bad. The reviewer faulted the game for the combat, but it was obvious he never took the time to actually do anything besides run and gun then blamed the game for only accomadating run and gun strategies. I'm telling you, AC, last night reaffirmed my belief that FC2 will be in my top 3 GoTY - if not the top spot. It never ceases to impress me. I just witnessed last night how if you shoot a rocket-propelled grenade the blow-back from the rear end will catch objects and the land on fire. How great is that?
Of course, I realized this while backed up against a wall in a room with some propane tanks. Lesson learned. :D
What I haven't done yet is play more than one round of multiplayer. I want to give it a try this weekend...

Yeah, just wait until you have one in bad shape and the RPG just falls out in front of you then decides it's trajectory.
In a field of grass.
Speaking of that, my friend was telling me about that exactly happening to him, and the RPG drew a perfect circle around him in the grass and and he had to be bailed out by a buddy.

I guess maybe I haven't put enough time into FC2 but I find it extremely mediocre so far. For one the aiming sensitivity on the 360 is terrible, this makes the gunplay dodgy and inconsistent. There needs to be a way to turn off the turn acceleration. Two, is there anything to do besides "drive to x location and kill these people"? Anything like climbing a mountain and flying a hang glider onto a moving train? Finally it's bad enough you have to drive everywhere, but I also have to be constantly harassed by enemies in vehicles? At this point I don't know if I will even go back to it.

Everyone keeps saying this about the driving and I can't understand it. I use buses to travel primarily - they get you across the map safely and quickly, there's always a vehicle waiting for you at the destination, the game gives you a save option once you reach your destination, and you don't have to deal with pesky patrols.
Are you guys really driving everywhere? That seems unnecessary.

It is, and I have no idea why anyone would expect to be able to just freely travel the roads in such a war torn setting.
Like I said in the thread, you can avoid patrols almost entirely by not taking the roads. It is pretty rare that you are forced into a patrol or a checkpoint by a bottleneck, it is a choice to stick with vehicles and on the roads.
Complain about the respawns, those suck. Not exploring your options is not a fault of the game.

You have to drive to the buses, also when the bus drops you off you have to drive to the destination. I use the buses but the problem still exists, you get harassed like every 20 feet. You should be able to catch a bus at any road to travel to the designated "stations", it would help a lot.
Not driving on the roads helps, I still get harassed offroad as well (when you get near a road) just not as much.

I know you're exaggerating here, but it's par for the course in a sandbox game to have to traverse great distances. Sure, fast travel is a feature a lot of games are adopting to cater to those who just want to get on to the next plot point. But no other game this year has offered me the same 'real world' experience.
Sometimes Far Cry 2 can be frustrating when you're caught out in the middle of nowhere, low on ammo, holding looted guns prone to jamming on you, low on syrettes, and surrounded by patrols and guard posts. It can be daunting and frequently causes me to study my map for safe routes around danger (which there are many: hiking trails, waterways, etc.). But the result is an immersive experience I'd have no other way.
This is a game that will take me some time to finish (I'm playing on Hardcore). But I've yet to dislike it. Sure, there are weaknesses (respawn time being foremost)...but compared to other titles? I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

Really if it wasn't for the harassing I would not want a better quick travel option. I actually like the idea of driving to the destinations, especially when the game looks as good as this one, because I too dig the real world vibe that brings. There just really needs to be less hassle when doing so for me. I will admit that using the river when possible is highly enjoyable (looks great) and avoids much of the harassing.
When you get further do certain factions stop attacking you to help with this at all? Is there any more variety in missions later on? I really want to like the game I'm just finding it hard to do so.

Nah, you always have both factions gunning for you.
The mission variety really depends on your creativity. Most of them involve an assassination, or retrieving a package, or blowing something up. However, they are all in locations that allow for very interesting tactics, and about a million choices.

I find the game like that as well...though I did stop playing, but I'm itching to return. It's one of the few sports games that shares the feel of NHL09. When I miss a goal or mess up a pass, I feel like it was my stupidity and not some pre-programmed pre-determined thing. A high risk pass or rushed shot should be harder to complete.
This weekend:
PC - Tomb Raider: Underworld...Yah, it's a love it or hate it series now and I still quite like it. I think it brings back that feeling of nostalgia of my youth. So, I pre-ordered after playing the demo and it should be sitting there ready for me when I get home tonight :)
PC - Left4Dead...Going to be playing online and splitscreen with my buddy to convince him to buy the 360 version.
PC - Fallout 3...getting near the end, I know it.
360 - NHL09...always in the queue.
360 - FIFA09...now that I've talked about it.
360 - Gears 2...I love the horde mode, even if I suck at it.
360 - RB6:V2...my buddy and I love neutralizing terrorists to no end.
PS3 - Penny Arcade Ep.1...I'm really enjoying this game. I really want to get Valkyrie Chronicles, but I'm holding off until I finish PA...I'll have to see how long I can hold out on that.

Ugh, I've been there. Restarted Oblivion maybe 5 times. And that opening tutorial dungeon and the initial main questline can be so toiling. I enjoyed the game a lot (still have to complete some guild chains and Shivering Isles expansion) but I wish the Oblivion gates were more varied in environments. I still need to get Left 4 Dead! :o
I'm in the same boat as you Gorvi. I also have that Zelda Collection, and I've never played Majora's Mask or Twlight Princess. One of these days...

Moran...
*Sigh*. This proves the point I was trying to drive home in another thread...why publisher's go to extreme behaviors to get their games to sell. Do those tactics sometimes include bullying, censoring etc...yes...but when you have to combat with shit reviews like AC is talking about...and yes, I did read that review...ugh..sorry, this isn't the thread for this soapbox. I just love when people put blinders on not seeing the whole issue.
That's pretty much what got me wanting to play. I should just play Majora's Mask, I've never actually played that (I have that GC Zelda Collection disc). Of course, I still haven't played Twilight Princess either. :(
Play Majora's Mask. It's a really good game...but it came after OOT, and well...nothing compares...but dear god just say not to Twilight Princess. Unless you play it on the GC...
TR has been like this for a while. Even when so many came back to the "revival" game, meaning the last one, it still felt a lot like you either love it or hate it kinda gameplay.
I'm in the same boat as you Gorvi. I also have that Zelda Collection, and I've never played Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess. One of these days...

Go play! Must be the 10 yr anniversary that has you wanting to play. And now the memories of playing that for the first time start rushing back...and before I go dig out my own copy...i'm fleeing...Hmm... so 10 Years is the Ocarina anniversary, eh? How sad is it that I had my wife get me an N64 and Ocarina Of Time for a wedding gift instead of a crappy watch or *shudder* cuff links? Not sad at all, now that I think about it.
Let's see what I'll be playing this weekend.
Mirror's Edge: I'm actually doing a review of this game for another site and have been enjoying the game so far, though I'm finding that if I play for extended periods of time, I start feeling nauseous. I might have to turn the reticle on if it keeps up.
Castlevania: OoE: I'm working the overnight shift tonight and at the very least I'll be playing this while watching movies and trying to stay awake. Fun times.
Left4Dead: I haven't played this since Tuesday but I'd like to get into it over the weekend. Toss me an invite tomorrow night if you see me on and we'll slay the horde and try to survive!
And Valkyria Chronicles and LBP, depending on how the other games go.
My biggest challenge is that no matter how much I want to play the other games on this list, A Kingdom For Keflings keeps devouring the majority of my time. ARG!
Oh, and I'm back on the WoWgon, so I'll probably tinker with my Death Knight and try to get my mage up to 70-71ish over the next few days.

That's great to hear, I'll probably do that then.
What's wrong with TP exactly? Especially on the Wii? I'm a big fan of the Zelda games, the only reason I hadn't played it was that I didn't have a Wii when it came out and wanted it for that instead of the GC.

I got really far into the game one time and got distracted by something else.
Another time I tried to play through and got stuck. I gave up and moved on to other games.
A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and Wind Waker are some of my favorite games, but for some reason OOT just doesn't do it for me. I think it's a combination of the very rough visuals and the abomination that is Navi.

I'm not someone who cared which hand Link used, so that quibble is out of the way.
As a game it's fine. My biggest beef with TP is that it just feels like Ocarina Of Time 2... and while you'd think that would be a good thing, it just felt like something I'd already played before.
And yes, I realize the hypocrisy of complaining about repetitive gameplay in a Zelda game.
I also much preferred both the insane dark take on the Zelda series with Majora's Mask and the whimsical cartoony vibe of Wind Waker over TOoT 2, er, Twilight Princess. Ocarina was great and is still great but Twilight Princess felt like a retread rather than an evolution.

The game overall is a Zelda game. A great thing...but the controls ...I never liked the Wii controls on the game. I thought the controls killed the charm of the game. It plays a lot like OOT, again not a bad thing...but if I had a real controller...it would of felt better. And for some reason I hated the map...I just think this game was meant for the GC...and then added to the Wii controls. But maybe it's just me...I didn't bother with Phatom Hourglass either. Hmmm. The Wii version is in widescreen, that's one plus I know it has. I don't think I'd mind the Wii controls, though I really couldn't say for sure. I don't have either version yet, but I hope to soon.
I passed on the PH as well, the temple in that sounded completely infuriating to me. I know I'll pick it up eventually just because I'm a fan of the series, but I'll wait til I can get it cheap.

This weekend is more COD5, Gears 2, screwing around with NXE, trying out the HOME beta, and again, because I didn't do it last week... force myself to play Uncharted again.
And on the download front. Squeeze in some more Wipeout HD laps, Kingdom for Keflings online mode, and more Banjo Kazooie.

Wait. I've been back to that Temple three times so far and I'm already annoyed :( It's actually not a bad game, but I've put it on the back burner for now. Though, I do have a big plane trip upcoming that I may force it back into my queue.

I probably need to go back to pick it up again to try to play it. Or I should just track down a GC copy...maybe that's the real answer for me. I'd suggest whatever version you can get cheapest :). But widescreen is nice...
And I didn't pick up PH due to the run through the dungeons in set amount of time...I was like, no thank you. What price is cheap enough for you? My price would be under $15...

What were the problems with the Wii controls? I didn't have a problem waggling the wiimote to swing my sword and beyond that, the only other thing that seemed different was that you could aim your bow with mouse-like accuracy. I'm down with that.
Plus it's in widescreen.
Now PH, that temple had serious problems. There were teleports that unlocked as you made it further in and so forth, but the fact that you had to fight/sneak through the earlier levels over and over again (instead of having them cleared out) AND do the puzzle aspects of each floor repeatedly pissed me right off. Thankfully the rest of the game was excellent, but that temple almost made me stop and never go back.

Maybe:
Plug the Wii back in. I'm hoping I'll warm up to Twilight Princess after I get out of the noob dungeon.
P.S. As for Phantom Hourglass, I would rent it because you can probably muscle through it in a weekend, give or take. Also there were one or two sport in which I swear I almost gave myself an aneurysm. Ironically that doesn't include the oft talked about time based dungeon. I think you express what I couldn't why I didn't like TW. And you would think I would like a rehash of OOT. How bad would that be. It just never felt...exciting as other Zelda games did. I don't feel I suddenly lost my allure for the Zelda series. I think my issue is for a game like Zelda, a big world action adventure/RPGesque game...I don't think Wiimote works for me. I want my controller in one piece. I don't want to waggle with my bow...even riding on his trusty mount didn't feel right...just plain exploring looking for heart pieces felt like a chore. And I need to find heart pieces since I need all the lives I can get to finish a Zelda game. like I said, I don't think i'm overly joyed with the Wiimote in most cases. And Zelda was the first game I was playing with the Wiimote. Now i'm a bit more used to it...it might differ.
I'll at least link to the one I'm doing for the other site :) I'm liking it but I'm kind of glad I didn't have to actually pay for it. Right now I really hope that they go through with their talk of leaving guns out of the sequel(s).

I rented and beat CoD4 in an afternoon. Holy shit is that game short. Probably the shortest game I've played all year. It was good, but wow...just brief. Went back and snagged a few more achievements playing on Veteran, but I think I'm done with it. I had heard it was short, and since I'm not a huge multiplayer guy, a rental was perfect for this.
Also rented Bourne Conspiracy (all from Gamefly) and started playing on the hardest difficulty. I got 4 or 5 levels in and it's been nothing but frustration for me. I think I'm just going to knock the difficulty down a notch or two. Some of the bosses (the one on the plane was the worst thus far) have taken me a LONG time knocking around before they die. It's terrible, since I kicked the living snot out of the man but he wouldn't die. Took me many tries to kill him, and each battle was a long one because of the amount of damage you have to dish out. Plus, some of the other areas just aren't very forgiving with their checkpoints and I've had enough of this shit. It's an alright game but I find the fisticuffs pretty boring. Their a huge part of the game, so I haven't enjoyed the game as much as I thought I would.
After I go back to normal difficulty and beat this game I'll fire up Banjo or Fallout 3 again. I'm trying to play through short games before getting back to my more beloved titles.

Bourne Conspiracy was a huge disappointment for me too. I loved the fighting in it (though you're right, the bosses take far too much damage) but the gunplay sucked, esp. with the less than stellar checkpoint placement.
I gave up towards the end of Bourne because the boss I was fighting was just stupidly difficult and after 4-5 attempts with little to no progress, I was done.
I would love to see a combination of the freerunning of Mirror's Edge with the fighting engine of Bourne Conspiracy. Mmm... Just leave guns far, far away from it!

Same here. After popping in TP for the Wii, the first Wii game I bought since I'm such a big Zelda fan, I came across my first example of why I dislike the Wii, or how companies use controls on the Wii. I never finished it, got very far in it, and I ended up selling it along with my Wii. I hated shaking my controller to make Link swing.
I sold my Gamecube (but not my games) in anticipation for the Wii, and waited to buy the Wii version of TP. I've since sold my Wii and wish I had kept my Gamecube. I guess I could still pick one up and snag Twilight Princess cheap and finally play it as it should be played. If I could find some component cables for the thing, I'd be even happier.

I had heard people talking up Bourne Conspiracy like it was a very overlooked gem. I can't agree at all. It's not a bad game, but it's not a great one either. The super-long boss battles are very irritating. That's the main reason I had a rough time on Assassin difficulty, and even normal mode takes a while. I realized it wasn't worthe the extra 100 achievement points to beat it on hard if I wasn't having that much fun in the process.
I bumped my difficulty back down to Normal and I'm gonna try to fly through the rest of the game before sending it back on Monday to Gamefly. I'm on the first driving segment right now. Shut if off to watch a flick with the girlfriend but am gonna start it up again soon.
I have a few painkillers coursing through my bloodstream right now, so it should be even more fun. :)

Older people on the forum..yep..more mature...wellllll...most days. And most people...so you found a good place. I for one am not mature..and neither is my long lost younger brother Spigot...we don't even pretend to be mature anymore :)
I really have to many games to play and the Wii for me is my second/third console. Some stuff I would like to play...yeah, it's the more "obscure" Spigot loving kind...or Avnovice kind...but I enjoy stuff like that. I just barely get to play my 360 as it is. But games like Zelda...no, no, no...the fucking Wii Mote doesn't work. I'm seriously tempted to track down a GC version of TP.
If you really want component cables for the GC...I am sure I have some. And I'm suppose to be looking for something else too in my unwieldy basement. Not that I can remember...but give me a shout if you want them. I'll look...
As for what i'm playing...Mirror's Edge is an awesome game. Unless you have a high threshold for possibly dying a lot...stay clear.

You have component cables for the GC? I thought they were hard to come by. I couldn't find any when I was out component shopping for my last gen systems. I got the Xbox and PS2 ones, but had to settle for composite for my Gamecube. :(
If you want to get rid of them or don't need them, yeah!
Do you have component cables for your Wii? Cuz I was a sucker and spent $35 bucks on the official Nintendo ones. And I don't own a Wii anymore. We could do a swap if you wanted.
Now I just need to buy a Gamecube again--no idea how much they're going for. I still have all the controllers and games I've wanted to play but can't since I don't own a Nintendo console anymore. Games like Tales of Symphonia, Baiten Kaitos, REmake, and many more.

If anyone is looking for component cables for the Wii, you can get a great deal at MonoPrice.com
There are a couple of different options and colors, but here is one for under $4.

Man, I had a platinum Gamecube, the one that came with the bundle along with Mario Kart. I always wanted the indigo one (the one that was actually purple, no matter what color they called it) because I found it...different. And I actually liked the color. I thought the Platinum one was blah.
But you are Purple Santa. Why wouldn't you want a purple console? :)

I love my Gamecube. I've been meaning to dig it out something and play some of the games that I bought for it and either didn't play at all (Paper Mario 2, Tales of Symphonia, Geist, etc.) or didn't spend enough time with (Eternal Darkness and a few others). Great console that I own many games for.
I'll have to look for some component cables sometime and do some Gamecube lovin'.

*Edit* And I thought the Gamecube was a neat machine. Don't know whey really, but I loved the design.

More derailment of this thread...but maybe it's under the "weekend gaming/play/purchase" theme...
Thanks to all the talk of cheap buys (Kelegacy, Spigot) I went to my local Circuit City looking for Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. Couldn't find that but low and behold...the discount bins. Of course I couldn't resist...for $10 each I picked up Dark Sector, The Darkness, Rogue Galaxy, Enchanted Arms and Condemned: Origins.
The first two I bought because it seems everyone seems to say they are the overlooked gems for this year. RG, i've been wanting to pick up...Enchanted Arms...I don't know...I'm on a RPG thing lately, just compiling them to play. And Condemned I started to play when it came out but was renting it and sent it back probably because something else came out I wanted to play more. So thank you Kelegacy for all your talk of cheap games...my backlog now grows bigger. I never used to have one. I was content with just missing out on to many games. Not now. Now I can stare at my small but growing backlog making me feel guilty i'm not playing them all...

Rogue Galaxy! I loved that game, despite the absolutely awful level design. The crafting was neat, the battle system was fun, and the story was at least pretty good, with a few very nice cutscenes. The last boss was a long ass fight, though, but fun.

Wow, great haul Purple! You never got Banjo from CC online? I remember you had some issues with shipping it to you. I'm still waiting on my raincheck for the free 1600 XBL points card that was out of stock when I bought my Gears of Wars (it came free with the game). Called yesterday and though I bought the game on the 8th, they still haven't got the shipment in yet. I'm guessing I might never get it, with Circuit City's financial problems.
Anyway, back to the haul!! Cheap games make me a happy gamer! Enchanted Arms isn't a bad game for $10, in fact I'd like to pick up another copy someday as I never finished my play through and sold it. Dark Sector...well, that's one of my overlooked games of the year. I loved it and couldn't stop playing until I beat it. Condemned was one of my fav. games that I played LAST year, even though it released in 2005. Condemned 2 is a great title too, and I snagged that for $17 at Gamestop earlier this year.
Rogue Galaxy and The Darkness are phenomenal as well (The Darkness was the one-two combo for my surprisingly great gems played last year, along with GUN). Rogue Galaxy is a great Level 5 JRPG, and I loved the actiony combat.
All in all, you scored big time. I always love getting incredible games for cheap. I'm surprised they were all $10 though, since my store seems to price the bargain bin games at weird amounts, like 8.96 or, as usually is the case with 360 titles, 16.96. Looks like I'll need to head back there sometime and scour the bins. I know there are some games I need to pick up on Black Friday from CC, but hopefully I can score those online (I'm under "house arrest" by my health insurance for the next couple weeks if they are to pay for my home-health nursing from my surgery).
Thanks for sharing your deals. I always like hearing people picking up incredible games for a very affordable price. Let me know how you like each of them as you play. Dark Sector was only just released this summer, and it's tragic it fell in price so fast--it was fantastic. Did you ever pick up Alone in the Dark, my other top underappreciated game, from Gamefly? It's only 5.99 right now.
EDIT: On topic, I beat Bourne Conspiracy last night. I winded up enjoying it after bumping the difficulty down to normal. Great graphics in this one. I also enjoyed the gunplay, something a lot of people condemned. I had no problem racking up the head-shots, but then again I heard people complain about Uncharted's gunplay and I loved that as well. Maybe I'm just a great 3rd person shooter. Head shots are no problemo usually.

Great haul there Purps. I especially loved The Darkness and Rogue Galaxy is a JRPG that I adored (though Kel's right. The level design leaves a lot to be desired). I need to go back and finish that sucker up one of these days.
Note to self: Stop buying new games and finish all of the half complete old JRPGs gathering dust on your shelf! Only Persona 4 and Chrono Trigger from now till March!
I ended up snagging The Last Remnant today while I was out buying some RAM for my laptop. When I'll end up playing it, I have NO idea, but hey, it's now in my collection!
Sigh. I also grabbed Band Of Brothers on Blu-Ray this afternoon. The sad thing is that it was only $80, which is about $20-30 cheaper than I've ever seen it on DVD. I'm just happy I waited to get it.
I'm still up for L4D on the 360 tonight if anyone is interested. I'll probably be forced to watch TV until about 10pm EST, but after that I'm up for some zombie killing if anyone else wants to join me.

Finished up Call of Duty: World at War. Great game, but everyone's pretty much spot on when he says it's basically Call of Duty 4: World War II. I think my favorite part of the game was hearing Gary Oldman every time I was playing on the Russian side.
I played more Gears 2 this weekend than I expected. I helped three friends get through wave 50 again on Normal, but then we decided to try it on Insane. With the four of us (on Blood Drive), we've only gotten up to wave 10. I actually might try to get in some more Gears tonight, though it's already almost 1 o'clock in the morning, so it's technically already Monday.

I got my copy for free from Target over the summer. Had a coupon for $10 of any game (or a similar coupon) and they honored it with CoD2, which was on clearance for that amount. Seeing how CoD3 is selling for 14.99 at Circuit City on Black Friday (or was it another store?) you can snag CoD2 for $10 or so nearly anywhere. It won't cost over $20, that's all I know.
The Call of Duty games ARE short. I rented and beat 4 over the weekend in just an afternoon of play. I rented CoD3 a couple years back and beat that just as quickly. Playing on Veteran will make the games feel much longer, but it could also frustrate many people because of the increased difficulty. The only sections I have problems on in Veteran are when enemies continually respawn and you have to hold an area for a set amount of time for help to arrive. The odds of dying and having to restart the segment are high in those instances.
But they're all worth a play through. I'd suggest renting them all and beating them in a weekend (you could probably beat two of them in a single day) but because of their greatness and cheap pricing, you might want to buy them. Maybe not CoD4 because that's still floating around $30 and unless you play the multiplayer I don't think the game is long enough even for that price. But CoD2 and 3 can be found for peanuts now.

I tend to slip into hyperbole when I speak of the game, but I'm speaking from the heart. Probably the most emotion-packed game I've played this gen. Well, I hope I'm not hyping the game up so high that it doesn't live up to those expectations when you finally play it. It's not a long game, and some of the optional sidequests can get repetitive (I loved killing people since using Darkness powers are always damn fun and never got old--I wish there were MORE people to kill in the game).
Still, I think you should wait. Game isn't going anywhere. Fallout 3, on the other hand, will eat your soul and free time.

True. But I am extremely impulsive...as you can tell by the recent deleve into CC bargain bin. So it's old but new shiny game that is attracting me to play. I'll probably take your advice and just put it in the backlog pile and wait for January to play.

Yeah, one of the biggest irritations about living in Japan and mainly relying on PlayAsia for games is that I almost never get the chance for those kind of absolutely awesome bargains. The 25% sales are cool but the older games I want are often not in stock so don't qualify. Occasionally I might find a cool Japanese release in the bargain bins over here but language is too much of a barrier for most genres.

I went to look when it was released, which was June 2007. I went on Metacritic and it had a good score of 82. It's possible it's the summer drought although it's surprising since you would think so little games...gamers will want to buy it? And then I thought about Alone in the Dark, another summer release...i'm wondering if the publishers have it right not selling games during ths time. Despite all the issues with Alone in the Dark, it's still coming around as a game that wasn't as bad as advertised.
But then I dug a little deeper into the scores for The Darkness, wanting to know what scores and from whom were pulling it down. There were quite a few "above 90" scores, and then I looked twoard the bottom. G4 TV gave it a 40. Nothing like a nice anomaly to throw off a score. And G4 TV? I don't want to even get started on that..and The Onion, gave it a 50. This is why I hate metacritic. Stupid uninformed gamers unfortunately use it. Is that the sole reason why the game didn't sell? Probably not. But it's another example of a game that in retrospect gets a lot more respect than it did when it came out...is it the price?

Those are some very strange scores for The Darkness. I actually rely more on Gamerankings than Metacritic, though that is more out of habit than anything else.
The contrast between The Darkness and Alone In The Dark is that AitD has some control issues and quirks that can get in the way of what I hear is a pretty interesting batch of ideas for a horror/action game while The Darkness is just a polished game that didn't get its due.
Sigh. It was based on a property that a lot of people didn't know and while the gunplay isn't the greatest, the game is brilliant once your darkness powers come into play. I gladly paid full price for it and didn't regret it one bit.

Yeah, I know comparing it to AiTD was a stretch. The control issues were killer to AiTD to some...I just chose to come back to it at a later date...but the word of mouth on it killed it. It was a game many were looking forward to also. Still, a lot of the criticism was unfair because it made it sound like it was unplayable. But it was another case of a summertime release and I wonder if it would of sold more if at another time of the year despite the bad reviews.
The Darkness, yes being an unknown property outside of the CB community...still have to wonder if releasing it in the summertime was a factor. Or maybe it wasn't marketed that great. But those ridiculous scores just underline what is wrong with game reviewing.

Unfortunately, you never fully get used to the controls in AitD. I was still having trouble swinging my weapons with the right analog stick towards the end of the game. It feels more clumsy than "difficult", and fights were overly frantic as a result. Factor in that enemies WON'T die unless they are burned (you can stick a wooden stick in fire to make it catch and then touch them, or shoot at impossible fissures in their body with "fire bullets") and fights can get crazy, fast.
And the inventory...whooee! Don't get me started. But still, it's a game I adapted to the best I could and enjoyed it immensely. But yeah, most people won't want to battle with some of the control elements.

The PS3 demo is my only experience with the game and the controls felt broken. If they were that bad and that's "fixed" I can't imagine how bad they were in the 360 version.

I didn't like the demo. I thought the game itself was a better indication of how the controls overall really were. I'm sure this will be in a bargain bin near you and likely you will find under $10 for somewhere eventually (if not now). According to the Kelegacy rule, a game under $10 is worth trying...

The tags for the wii and wiiware seemed to be automatic for some reason. I added a few :)That's more like it!

Yup, and since AitD is only $6 from Gamefly it makes it a no-brainer.
You will at LEAST get $7 worth of enjoyment from it. :) I got about $30 worth and I paid $10. But I liked driving all over Central Park trying to find all the evil root things in the game later in the story when the world opens up completely. Some of them require real brainpower to destroy.

I swear, I'm never lucky enough to find these sub $10 deals. The only place around me that ever has them is Toys R Us, where I was able to get Gurumin and Zack & Wiki each for $8, but I'm not there all that often. Other than that, they don't seem to exist.
