That kind of thing is always waiting for that tiny catalyst that sets off the destruction of most if not all relationships in such webs. It's fun while you appreciate the romanticism of it all but when that bitch called life slaps one of them into reality, everything else is coming down.

Or maybe not.

They've all been together for years now, so I think they've got it figured out.

Besides, I know lots and lots of 'monogamous' relationships that went down in flames. At least this group that I know is very open and communicative.

Wow, there are a lot of judgmental and/or jealous and/or bitter people in this thread. Yikes! :p

I think you may be confused as to what is actually being said here. There are no guarantees in any relationship, monogamous or not. And the fact that they've been together for years is not indicative of success or impending failure. The only thing that is really being said (on my part at least) is that when real emotions make an appearance (if ever they do), then things aren't going to be about fun anymore.

And as a man who has been in purely sexual relationships with multiple people at a time, almost always does some kind of emotion get involved. Be it love, jealousy, or loss.

This isn't about judgments, jealousies or bitterness, it's about experience.

I know what you are saying, but I think it's rather odd that a bunch of people are rushing in to say that their relationship is going to fail simply because it is more complex than your typical nuclear family.

There is certainly emotion involved already. They all care about each other. It's not like they go around fucking everyone...at least not that I'm aware of. :p

It's not that, Mags... it's just extrapolating the math like Serapth said. Relationships are hard enough... then you factor in multiple people with multiple lines to each person. It's statistically a situation that is more likely to fail.

But I hate statistics anyway- I've just known enough of these situations to fail that I base my comments on experience. That said, there is no guarantee for any relationship, and I certainly wish all your friends the best.

And personally, I can't even juggle dating two people. My emotions and energy split between two people just doesn't give either of them my best (if we were talking casual sex, that'd be different, but I've never really enjoyed that).

Mr. Murphy
07-06-2011, 02:33 PM
Well, here's how the non-monogamy works for us (spoilered for off topic length).

The people in my particular complex relationship simply talk about our sex lives the same way we talk about any of the other fun things we do in our lives. When the woman I love bones someone else, I don't get any more jealous than I do when she plays video games with someone else. I love her for who she is, and who she is involves having sex with people occasionally. I don't think that my feelings towards her put parameters on her behavior. Since we live apart from each other, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to be celibate just because we're in love - so instead we just talk about it with open, balls-to-the-wall communication. She had a hilarious story about almost getting laid two weeks ago after playing strip-frisbee, but in the end they didn't have a condom and he just got a handjob. The details of the situation crack me up, and it in no way meant her feelings for me had changed. She was just horny and he was cute. He was also dumb and they haven't spoken since. It means as little to me as jerking off to some porn would.

I realize a lot of people aren't emotionally equipped for this kind of thing, and I wouldn't push it on anyone, but for me and my particular group, we all want to love each other for who we are, not put boundaries on each others' behavior. It's an exercise in unconditional love, loving somebody without attaching demands to that love. Loving someone so much that you want them to be happy and human and real - because that's who you fell in love with - more than you want them to be monogamous or by your side.

I like sex. So does she. So do my lesbian girlfriends. We all enjoy it, and talk about the feelings it brings up, and grow with them, together. It's an incredibly bonding experience all around. It's almost like a relationship on "hard mode" (pun intended), because it IS more difficult and it requires every bit of sensitivity and communication that I've learned in my thirty years of life, but it's also more rewarding in just about every way. Most relationships would have fallen apart in our particular situation - I'm in the desert making music practically alone, she's working 50 hours a week in a burn ward, saving lives - but instead we've grown remarkably closer, noticably so, since we moved apart.

I know she would never lie to me, and that she tells me the utter truth about herself, her feelings, and what she's going through, even when they are feelings or actions that would upset a lot of couples. I do the same thing in return. No obligations, no shame, no demands, just sharing our lives with one another. For us, it works, and is a hundred times more satisfying than my years of failed monogamous relationships had ever been.

It's not about indulging every sexual whim you have, either. We have responsibilities to one another, to be safe and clean and to not take things too far in any one direction without the consent of the group. But we've all talked about all of that, and we know where every other person is, emotionally. We're very sensitive and caring about each others' emotions, it's not like we're just running around committing acts of crazy debauchery if it would upset someone or make someone feel uncomfortable. But life should be fun, and there's not enough love in the world, so we do what we can to increase the love, not smother or shape it.

Commitment is another aspect - we're not committed to each other with any label. If she met a man tomorrow that she felt she wanted to marry, and started spending all of her time with him, and didn't want to sleep with me (or us) anymore, my love for her would continue. I don't need her to be with me to love her. I don't need her to marry me, I love her for who she is, even if who she is doesn't end up by my side until death. She will always be in my life, even if it's only in my heart. Once I got to that point, where I knew I loved her whether she loved me back or not, no matter what she did - I was free, and the rest was easy.

This is not an attack on monogamy or traditional marriage, it's just an example of how there can be relationships - very real, fulfilling relationships - that don't fall into those common parameters. I spent years feeling like a bad person because I knew there were vast parts of my feelings and personality that I couldn't share with my girlfriend, since it would hurt her feelings to know that I also wanted to bone my best female friend who I am very close to. Not being able to express my love for one person simply because I love someone else as well does not work for me, therefor I had to learn to accept that the people I cared for could do the same thing, express their love for others, while still loving me. I don't believe love and monogamy are synonymous.

Granted, my life is weird, and I'm a weird fellow. I tried to live like everyone else for a long time, but I eventually had to accept that I'm simply not normal in any sense of the word. I don't "get" the vast majority of social interaction. People are so jealous and demanding and they build these layers socially accepted bullshit between themselves and the truth, and call it normal. I rejected normalcy some time ago. I've lived the kind of life people write books about, and I don't intend to stop anytime soon.

It's only easy when there's no love. Everything else is whatevs. But to think that it'll be easy to watch someone walk away from you because they found someone that they love more than you (and they do, otherwise they wouldn't be cutting off the other relationships) is downright delusional. Live your life, but poly or mono, but the best relationships are the ones that are simultaneously easy and hard.

People like to say "its just sex" all the time, but it's not.

I had a vasectomy years ago, but I wouldn't mind a child in my life. We all use condoms, even on the sex toys. We trust each other not to make foolish decisions.

I may have given you guys the impression that we all run around boning strangers. We don't. These are women I've known for more than ten years, we grew into this relationship over a long, long time.

I have a feeling this conversation is about to splinter off into its own thread.

I've shared my life and opinions with you guys, and I've followed up on the immediate responses. As far as my part in this conversation goes, I've said all I care to say. The funny thing about polyamory (or polyamor tendencies in general) is they rely on a much more fluid definition of love, that doesn't really hang their hat on traditional relationships. It's not that you can only be in love with your spouse. It's not even necessarily that you're only in love with someone you're sleeping with. As Murph's post shows, it's really kind of a personal definition that varies from person to person, and even from relationship to relationship. Love can be sexual, or spiritual, or emotional, or anything you make of it.

While that's not necessarily an attack on traditional views of love and romance, it does kind of turn things on its head, and as such gets viewed as an attack by some even though the basic premise of love being a personally defined thing means that if someone chooses love to mean only in the strictest most traditional terms, that should be accepted as much for being their choice as another having a different choice.

That "TV shows aren't real" comment was meant lightheartedly, not as snarky as it probably sounded.

What about Cops?

:D

As a pure curiosity... you don't have kids now, do you? ( Going from memory, didn't think you did ). If not, why would you have a vasectomy, while not opposed to having kids?

I do not have kids. At about 21 after my first failed attempt at traditional domestic bliss I made a decision to focus on the things I could accomplish with my life other than raising children. I came from a poor family, and my parents were miserable because they spent all their time working two jobs each just to support their kids. I had dreams and artistic goals (still do) that require a lot of time and effort. It was a purely selfish decision, to focus on my life instead of the lives of another.

In the time since then, I've grown to believe that not only is it foolish to try and control every aspect of your life (I prefer to allow life to happen to me organically, which is how I've ended up in my very awesome and unique situation) but my brother has had children, and the time spent with my neices and nephews has shown me how much you GET from giving. I've realized that I wouldn't mind having a little one in my life, even though it would mean changing my plans. So if someone caught pregnant, I'd be ecstatic. Life happens.

I was raised (from before birth) by a man who is not my biological father, but he's my dad, he's the only dad I've ever known, and I'm his firstborn son. I love him just as deeply as I would if it was his sperm that had made me. Maybe more, since he's been with my mother since before I was born and never once treated me as anything but his - that's a huge deal to me (I've never met my bio dad, altho we've recently become penpals, thanks to Facebook and his nosy girlfriend).

So, where I am now in my life, at thirty, I would have no problem dealing with the new challenges of a child, and would enjoy the experience, even though money would still be an issue. However, it's not something I'm actively seeking out, at any point in the future. The woman I love feels the same way. We have other things to love, like each other and our work, (musician and Doctor are both incredibly rewarding, love-filled professions that allow you to be very connected to the world around you, and the people in it, not just your family) as well as the other children in our lives.

I mean, I'm the favorite Uncle. The relationship I have with my nieces and nephews is unlike anything anyone else in my rather large family has.

And to MM: My wife are in a very similar boat in a way I think. We have our own business and love what we do and I think we're just too selfish (not meaning that negatively at all) to have children right now. If we ever do I want to be able to focus solely on them and we're just not at a place in our lives right now where that would be possible. I think too few people recognize that and it's refreshing to hear someone who does. Most everyone I seem to talk to today almost needs to have kids rather than wanting to have them. This one I took on my birthday a few days ago to document what my rapidly decaying 29 year old body looks like. I'm sure by 30 my nose will have completely rotted off and possibly half an ear.

In regards to the shorts, my sister bought them for me a while back. With my recent weight loss, I have to put on a belt, two notches in. Otherwise, they would just slip off!

Well, they do put alot of effort into their fashion wear. Even though some may consider it anti-fashion, it takes effort, planning, and follow through to put on their daily outfit - a very unlazy-like activity. Hammocks just don't look comfy to me. I've never laid in one though.

Hammocks are the greatest. I would have one on my porch and be laying in it right now, if there were a place to hang it.

I have a hammock tent that I use for backpacking: it's two pounds and easy to set up -- no ground tarp, no stakes, and you just need two trees. There's a mosquito net over the top, and you can put a rain tarp there as well. You climb up into it through a gash in the bottom that Velcroes back together, and it's the closest you can get to crawling back up the birth canal. The comfort is also comparable, metaphorically speaking.

That's awesome. A few weeks back I was discussing the LARP potential of a hammock with a friend, how it would be cool for a wood elf or a fae to just wander off into the woods at night and disappear. We didn't realise that you could get hammock tents.

This is what I camp with, obviously not for backpackers. It's got a super easy set-up though and I love that you aren't sleeping on the ground which in some camp sites can be gravel. If you're going to get one of these things though, you really need a fan because it has little to no air circulation in there. I'll have pictures of mine next month after I take my week in the keys. I'm camping one night at Bahia Honda Key.

I'm cranking out tailored resumes and cover letters. Also scanning the web for motorcycle touring and travel information.

I got laid off by the corporation that bought out my old place of employment. They kept me on long enough to finalize the transition and IT merger of the old company's systems, users and data. Then they brought in one of their enterprise sys admins.

Probably a good thing. That place was kept on the edge of chaos by the management. Every time it seemed like the users and systems were reaching a level of stability, they'd throw some new wrench into the systems. I don't think I would like working there much longer. So after 6+ months of working 10 and 12 hour days, I'm making Career Plan Realignment a full time venture.

However; My wife thinks I need a break. (God, I love her!) Between her Adventures With Cancer and my career travails, It's time to get out on the road, blow the cobwebs out and find a fresh state of mind.

I've always wanted to do a Coast To Coast motorcycle ride. I've thought I would have to do a week-long Interstate speed run, since I've always had limited vacation available. But where is the fun in that?

Since I've got a surfeit of free time available now, my wife suggested a 3 or 4 week long ride. The first thing that came to mind was Key West! Then I figured I could stop at my brother's place in Miami; use that as a jumping off point. Then I thought of The Tail of the Dragon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deals_Gap,_North_Carolina)! Then the Old River Road on the Mississippi! New Orleans! It just keeps getting better!

The bike is going in for a scheduled service this week. After another couple of days of planning and packing, I'm going to hit the road! Unless a job offer or some other inconvenience pops up.

Where should I go for beignets in The French Quarter?

Cafe du Monde is the most obvious beignet and coffee joint, and it's definitely got the history. The Morning Call used to be in the Quarter but moved (antique countertops and all) to Jefferson Parish, with another one in Metairie. I'd say hit Cafe du Monde while in the Quarter, and find The Morning Call as you leave town.

Hey, if you run through Texas, you have a place to stay and a garage if you need it. Only cost would be picking your brain about long distance biking :)

The Hennessy Hammock (http://hennessyhammock.com/)!- I was really interested in getting one of these, but started camping with my girlfriend and needed something we could share. Got the giant Nomad tent (http://redverz.com/index.html) with motorcycle garage, and am very happy with it. But I could definitely still see using one of those hammock tents when it's just me out there.

From what I've seen, the velcro is under your legs, but the area from head to thigh is solid. You swing your legs down through the velcro and basically duck out of the tent.

Like many entities with an inflated sense of their own importance, I am not swayed by internet petitions.

The only way to keep things fair is to deny the Buddha to all. :(

I'm sorry my fellow Coggers but these trips have no set itinerary and that's the way I like it.

The key thought behind my trips is to put stress and anxiety behind me. If I were running late to Minneapolis, I would be totally stressed and worried about meeting The Gnome on time. Not the kind of distraction that I need while piloting a motorcycle through a strange city after 6-12 hours in the saddle.

Also, I always try to avoid major cities unless they are one of my destinations. I avoid rush hour in Seattle while on my bike, and I know the traffic patterns here. I hate dealing with a new city and its traffic!

BONUS: My loving and beautiful wife purchased a netbook for my birthday for the trip! I'll try to post some pics while I'm on the road!

Hey! I never said I was a Magnanimous Buddha!

Edit: Bone,

Mags, I wouldn't do this for too many people, but I could probably meet you for coffee or a beer (Depending on the time of day) if you were willing to drop everything and scamper to a yet to be determined purveyor of beverages. Anybody else live near you? Shunoshi? Get ready to scamper! :D

I'll be posting the general time that I leave and should be in Scoggins in 2 or 3 days.

Awesome, I'm excited! :D

Yes, the Mississippi River goes right through the Cities. I have a pretty wide open schedule this summer, so let me know when you're near the area!

Yes, I've been reading old posts for some reason.

Sadly, the project was put on hold when the guy running it got hired by Upper Canada Village (http://www.uppercanadavillage.com/home.htm) to work as a villager, which is pretty much his dream job. Hopefully we'll get to it later this fall or next spring!

Buddha, make sure you stop by my house in Utah on your trip. But you need to show up after 8:30 when my kids go to bed but before 10:30 when I go to bed. Oh, and park your bike down the street so you don't wake them up. And remember to bring a treat for my dog or he might maul you. I can't wait!

I'll show up around midnight after I pull the baffles from my exhaust so the Beemer sounds like an unmuffled semi! I'm not very good at doing donuts on the bike, so instead of doing them in the street, I'll do them on your lawn in case I fall. I'll even bring some of those little airline bottles of Scotch so the kids have something to drink too.

I'll bring a rabid wolverine from Minnesota for the dog to play with!

I like Iron Maiden and all and I grew up loving Eddie, but I have to say... they've got to be fucking old now, geriatric old. Ozzy can pull it off, but sold his soul long ago for that power, I can't imagine Maiden held up quite as well.

On the note, how the fuck are these old rockers still playing live gigs? It's physically demanding and these people put their bodies through the fucking ringer throughout life, it just doesn't make sense. If I could do that shit in my 50s after a life of abuse... damn!

EDIT: Actually, now that I think back, Iron Maiden was actually pretty squeeky clean in reputation. No stories of murder or drug fueled benders, no overdosing.

Agreed. Their new album is a good example of how they still sound great; Bruce's voice has lowered a bit, but it still has the same operatic force behind it, and IMO it's occasionally even better than when he was younger--especially on songs like "When the Wild Wind Blows" and (from the Dance of Death album) Paschendale. It just works better with those songs.

So yeah, they don't sound EXACTLY the same as they used to, but they haven't lost a bit of their energy, and they've adapted their sound accordingly.

Would you believe me if I said we haven't had sex yet? She wants to wait, and I'm not going to push her...not my style. A month is certainly the longest I've been with a girl without having sex though.

The strange thing is that in all of my past relationships, sex has always been a major theme. I couldn't imagine them without it. With her I don't feel like it has to be there. We genuinely enjoy each others company and her cheeriness is infectious...I'm grinning like an idiot the whole time I'm with her.

The second she's ready, I'll be ready, but I'm not going to risk losing the most amazing girl I've ever met by pressing the matter.

Let me say, in all honesty, kids recharge your appreciation for just about everything. Suddenly an idle Sunday reading a book becomes nirvana.

My brother tells the best story of a bored stripper, who, halfway through her dance, looked backstage where the other strippers were and apathetically tapped the side of her nose. (It's not a great story, per se, but a great pantomime sells it)

It's a sad day when you know your stripper is only half coked up.

That hat is most wicked. And as much as I'd love for Francious-Marie Arouet to be back, for he is by far my favorite Enlightenment thinker and human being I've never personally met, I'm afraid Zombie Voltaire just isn't in the cards. The man's name is Aurelio Voltaire Hernandez. He uses his middle name as his stage name and because he is also a fan of the French philosopher.

Chances are you have heard of him and don't even know it. Remember the show "Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy"? He did a lot of the music for it. In any case, here's a song by Voltaire titled Vampire Club. It's pretty funny and is a good example of the kind of stuff Voltaire normally does.

I've used the IM theme pretty much since the site was founded. It's definitely the best of the three, but seeing EvAv again reminded me how much I loved that theme.

Seeing EvAv again reminded me...as much as I love CoG and won't ever go back to that place, EvAv has a much nicer colour scheme. Sorry! :D

First time I've been there in a while, it's a shame what they did to my sports forum.

I'm refreshing that thread, waiting for a banning and/or deletion. What a fun way to make an exit.
