Time for some updates! I have to take pictures so I can remember things these days - I am almost 34 after all!

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae119/anjanettehouser/SunsetCruise_KeyWest.jpg

This was the hubby and I well into a sunset booze cruise in Key West.

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae119/anjanettehouser/BigFish_KeyWest.jpg

I caught this 20 lb dolphin (mahi-mahi) the morning after the above booze cruise. OMG - what a hangover! This fish was the best tasting fish I have ever eaten!

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae119/anjanettehouser/KeyKeyatshop_KeyWest.jpg

And this was the moment we met our newest family member, Key-key West Houser. She's a miniature Australian Shepherd. She is 3 lbs in this picture and will get to be about 15 when fully grown. Never had a dog before but this little one stole our hearts! I mean, who goes on vacation and comes back with a dog?

We weren't on a cruise in the traditional sense. I quit my job (left games entirely) and had a month off so we decided to fly to Ft Lauderdale and drive down. The husband lived in the keys (Islamorada) after we broke up 15 years ago and wanted to show me around. We went to the best bar ever (aside from Shorty's in Seattle, of course) called the Brass Monkey! It was such a dive, we didn't even know if it was open or not!

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae119/anjanettehouser/BrassMonkey.jpg

Then we kept going to Key West and spent a week or so down there. We went on two "cruises" - one was a sunset booze cruise (about 3 hours and they kept the drinks coming the whole time) and the other was a 6-hour deep-water fishing trip.

Key-key is the cutest thing ever! But I am a Texan and have guns all over my house - you come for her, I'll be forced to tell the police I thought you were a zombie. Her breed normally gets to be 45 -60 lbs (depending on female or male) but she should be about 15 lbs fully grown. She is a pure bred blue merle.

There is The Southernmost House, Southernmost Hotels and Southernmost Point Guest House. The Guest House is the one across the street from the small south beach area. Southernmost Hotels has a place that is Southernmost on the Beach (http://www.southernmostresorts.com/southernmost_beach.html). So many "Southernmost" places.

Why did you quit games?

That is a really long story but in the short story version I was sick of the expected long hours, the limited career path and the lack of any kind of work/life balance. I was also getting too old for all that shit. Before I got "caught" in that career path, I wanted to know that my skills could transfer to another industry.

So, I looked around and one of my old college friends told me about his best friend's high tech B2B marketing firm in Austin (where I've been for 11 1/2 years). I sent my resume, got an interview, then another and then a REALLY good offer. Doubled my salary, halved my hours and I get to go back to my roots (I got my degree in PR). I've been here 3 weeks so far and I LOVE IT! It is super professional and they think I'm both a creative genius and a wealth of technical knowledge. LOL!

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be here today without everything I learned for the gaming industry. I do miss it but I have plans to have my own game studio in the next 3 years. Now that I have the time to dedicate to my business proposal and prototype, this is a real possibility (thank you investors!).

And yes, that is the short version :)

Problem now is everybody is making cookie cutter artsy platformers with dumb gimmicks and relying on the cool indie image to sell the game.

If it's okay to be serious in here I'm going to ask a question :P
I've been putting of deciding "what I want to do when I grow up" for as long as possible by picking the education paths that leave lots of doors open, but now I have to pick a specialization for the 4th and 5th year of my degree. In short, I'm not sure if I should go for something pigeon holed like theoretical physics which will inevitably lead to a phd and a shit wage, or something extremely useful (but a whole lot less exciting) like control systems engineering. I've always figured I was going to study something theoretical, but yeah, jobs... I'd love to study QED but it seems a bit like shooting yourself in the foot.

Why? The internet is (aside from the porn and 4chan) actually a useful tool for finding information. And with eBooks becoming only more and more popular the traditional function of a library is going to change, no matter what. They've started renting eBooks now for one :p

We actually had this discussion in one of my classes. Basically, the traditional function of the library is not changing, how we do it is. There will always be a place for physical books and physical papers and magazines but we're just adding new tech to what we do as it becomes useful to us.

Go to the beautiful downtown Minneapolis library (built in 2006, a gorgeous facility) and you will see people checking out books, but they are far outnumbered by the people using the dozens upon dozens of computers to send e-mail, check Facebook, and the like. I'm sure a few people are there doing research, but they seem to be the exception.

FYI, free internet access is a ploy by public libraries to get people to use the public libraries. A rather successful tactic too I might add.

The hope is, if they're in the library, maybe they will actually use some of it's other services. Public libraries provide a lot of community center type functions to get people in the doors.

That's a good point. The libraries here are a great resource. They are going to build a new one in my neighborhood soon, and I'm looking forward to checking it out. The old one is underground, which is pretty cool, but I guess the facility has a lot of structural issues (leaks, etc.)

I know most of the drinking establishments around Saskatoon pretty well but I can't place that wall. Yard and Flagon is the only thing coming to mind, but does not seem right. (Not trying to be nosy it is just bugging me though.)

Now that I've typed out your name, I have to ask...where does the kdmw come from? I assume Josh is your name, although I guess I could be wrong there.

Upping the ante, went and saw Flogging Molly with Superman's Dead last night. This was before the sweaty mosh pit and almost passing out due to the mass of bodies.

All that good that fucking information will do you. I've been trying to log into fucking Steam for the last goddamn hour and it's stupid fucking automated service tells me my username then it's fucking support page tells me that username doesn't fucking exist. Then I ask to reset the fucking password and and I answer my stupid fucking secret question and it tells me my new password in-fucking-valid. All this goddamn I keep getting fucking automated emails even though the stupid support page keeps telling me that email address doesn't fucking exist. FUCK FUCK FUCK. Now if you'll fucking excuse me I'm going to walk over to my stupid shelf, take a console game out of it's case and put it in so I don't have to deal with this stupid fucking bullshit anymore.

So... uh... funny update to this. Steam support emailed back and told me that my account had been hijacked by another user. Thankfully, the credit card had long expired since I hadn't bought anything in almost two years.

Well, after a slight delay with a mixup in location. Our mini CoG meetup happened tonight. Drinks were good and the conversations was better.

Here's a pic of me, Mags, and Supes. Although it appears we're in the Mexican jungle, it's actually just a bar in Minneapolis. Sorry about the blurriness, bad phone pic. Mags doesn't like the pic either, but too bad for him. :p

I simply can't smile, 3rd years as a kid with braces completely warped that ability from me.

MagGnome
06-13-2011, 09:21 AM
Yeah, I had braces twice in my life, and I currently have a retainer that I wear full time (except when eating). I'll have it on until I finish getting work done at the end of the year. I've basically trained myself over the years not to smile, and it's hard to overcome years of habit.

My joylessness and crippling depression are what trained me not to smile.

That's the reality of the situation, I wouldn't hurt a fly. I am routinely described as "lovely". However, you do have to get past the whole 6'5", 300lbs, hairy, caveman-like brow thing to figure that out.
