We spent two ten-hour days in Texas heat with no AC. Well, they had AC, but it's turned off when recording to avoid picking up interference. It was two of the best days of my life. The quality of our songs and the level of musicianship is ten times better than our first album- and you could feel it. It's a large band, even without the horns who will add their parts later... two guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and keys, plus the singer doing "guide" tracks so we know where to come in. We operated like a machine, the culmination of four years playing together and knowing each other well. The same engineer from our previous album recorded us and said "This sounds like the record you wanted to make two years ago, but you weren't THIS band yet". It's truly amazing what we accomplished in a weekend, a guerrilla recording effort.

The best moment was listening to the instrumental playback of our eight-and-a-half-minute magnum opus, and watching as our singer got tears in her eyes. Considering she wrote the tune and relied on us to flesh it out, it was like giving her song back to her as a gift. I get overcome just thinkin' 'bout it. Having friends like this is like being able to choose your family.
