Mrs The Squid wanted to do a car boot sale, before the move to Ireland, in order to trim down a lot of stuff we don't really need. For you colonial types, a car boot (trunk) sale is a field full of people selling stuff from their cars.
Mrs S snapped a couple of shots.

I think everyone is perfectly cool with him doing it if he chooses, just not with some of the misinformation and pseudoscience that was flung around in that thread. If you want to do something potentially dangerous that has been shown to be a placebo, go for it. Just make sure the bad side is told to prevent other naive people from attempting it as well without full knowledge of what they are doing.

This.

Nothing Civil said really bothered me in the slightest. He openly recognized there's not much backing it up, but that it worked for him to make him feel better. My persistence was mostly out of concern, but the only time things really got outside of being perfectly cool was the pseudoscience and misinformation being spread by OldeWolf.

EDIT: I will admit I knew posting that it would cause a little ruckus, though I was genuinely hoping to find someone else who had gone through it. As for the rest...well, I expected it. Tolerance is a great ideal but what we have instead is subjective acceptance. That's not a knock on anyone here. It's humanity. It's how we are.

crazyD

I hate the misuse of tolerance in that manner. I do not need to be tolerant of bad science. Tolerance is a good ideal when it is over something you cannot control.

To be honest, blue hair normally is a massive turnoff. Its a sign of trying to hard, or generally seems that way. In this case though, I have to agree, she is hot, and the hair adds to the effect.

see i hate this idea that any one doing anything "non normal" must be doing it out of a sense of rebellion or some such rubbish. Almost all my friends are "non normal" in the sense that most of our tastes in cloths music and the like is "non normal" and you want to dismiss that because why? you think growing up means having to walk in line with every one else? if the kids like loud coloured hair (like i did have and still do) what the hell is wrong with that? or do you have to make your self feel better about the peer pressured style that you've accepted because you think it makes you more grown up but really don't like that much?... see i can make snap judgements that likely anit true too!

Every group has idiots but to assume that just because some one acts in a way you don't see as "normal" dose not mean they are doing it just to be non normal... in fact the vast majority of us non normals who are grown up do it because it's what we enjoy thank you very much.

That is defiantly not the case here. About any job higher up the food chain then Starbucks barista, you will see almost no non naturally occuring coloured dye jobs, tats are generally limited to descrete / coverable locations, hell even ( facial ) piercings are somewhat limited.

So, here atleast, it is an act of rebellion, as you are imposing a glass ceiling over how far you will advance, atleast in 95% of companies. Personally, I just don't think its a fight worth fighting... I mean, there are half a billion other causes I find more worthwhile and less self centered.

This is true in a way but it's also stupid. None of my friends are stupid enough to try and get a job where odd coloured hair or piercing or the like are judged as a bad thing and go with odd coloured hair and a face full of piercing. That's just practical thinking and that you seem unable to grasp it is again down to the fact that your idea that odd coloured hair must be some form of rebellion. I've had odd coloured hair and it's been when i'm a student or have a job that has been ok with it. I've died it and taken out my piercing to apply for "higher up" or more well paid jobs. I find it some what insulting that you think just because i've had odd coloured hair that i'm some kind of idiot who was putting limitations on my self and would turn up for a job interview with blue hair.

Shes a student and do you want to know who she works part time for? my friend next to me in that photo. He own and runs one of the biggest music promotion companies in the UK, the biggest for unsigned acts. He can make a few grand a good week and she can make good money from working for him even with her blue hair. So he blue her is not limiting her for what she needs to do now and is there because she likes it not as some minor act of rebellion.

Where am i contradicting my self? i agree that some jobs demand a given way of dressing but if your not in a job like that or looking for one what is wrong with having a hair colour you like or dressing like you want? To you dressing in a way that won't get you one of these jobs is just an childish act of rebellion to me loud coloured hair or dressing the way i do is simply dressing in a way that i like and if i need a job that enforces a different dress code i will follow it... in other words how the hell can it be a childish act of rebellion if it's in fact not rebelling against anything? and that when it would be a stupid childish act of rebellion (doing it in a job for which is not suited) i and every one i know wouldn't, in fact, do it.

My reaction is down to the fact that you can't seem to understand that doing some different to the norm isn't by default an rebellious act. It's insulting that based on the way that i choice to dress when i have a choice you presume i'm a childish idiot because i don't follow your convections when i don't have to. You presume that me or the girl in the photo are some how less "grown up" or more stupid than you are because we can get away with having a odd hair colour we like if we feel like it.

So summed up my dislike of your statement isn't anything to do with the idea of rebellion but the simple fact that i don't like being called stupid at any time even less so when its based on an near idiotic snap judgement of the way i might choice to dress when i'm free to dress as i like.

Hotcod is bang on here, and Serapth; you are either deliberately misinterpreting what he wrote, or you need to read it again.

I have an "unusual" hair style (If you can call it a style), I am covered in tattoos and I make a very decent living. I have worked in my in current role as a professional for seven years. I chose to have a certain lifestyle, to look the way I do, not out of any sense of childish rebellion, but because it is my choice.
My partner has had a variety of wild hair colours and styles over the years, and she is a hard working, reliable, professional woman who also earns a very decent wage.

You are coming off as extremely closed mined, arrogant and bigoted with your view of people who chose to colour their hair differently.

To be honest, you guys, I think the girl in the first picture with the black hair is the hot one, though I can only see part of her face. She has a cute nose, and I dig the lip ring. Her tattoo is also pretty, from what I can see.

Really? Are you going to tell me that with your choice in how to dress/style and or tattoos, that you haven't slammed the door to a number of job opportunities? Or, is it just a giant fluke I have never met a purple haired banker or blue haired lawyer, or heavily visibly tattooed politician?

And your point is? i've still not worked it out. I've stated a number of times that any one i know who do jobs that don't let you have strange colour hair wouldn't have strange coloured hair to do them. In fact a good number of my friends are working at the tax office at the moment and 2 of them are people who have had more odd coloured hair than me. But since there not stupid they stopped doing it when they could not get away with it... if the tax office was happy with them having strange coloured hair then they likely would have it. There's also lots of people i know in "professional" jobs who have tattoos and dress differently when they are not at work.

On a related note i know for a fact some high level people in big companies have gone in to work wearing ladies underwear after being told to do so by the women who dom them... they could get away with it, they enjoyed it, so they did it.

So please understand the idea that when you can do something you like with out it having a negative effect why is it childish and rebellious to do so? The girl with blue hair likes her blue hair and can have her blue hair with out it being a problem but to you she's a childish kid trying to be rebel against mummy and daddy. It's insulting.

When I started working at the mental health clinic I was encouraged to let my face scruff up so I would drop the baby face. Then the owner rolled in a few days later with her head freshly shaven. Styles is styles; everyone makes little compromises for society and everyone sneaks their own weird taste in as much as they can.

It is pretty dangerous to make assumptions based on outward appearances, though. One of my best friends is a roughneck, and when he gets into town he generally looks like a roughneck fresh off the rig. Which is to say, not far from a hobo. However, because of his job, he's a guy that looks like a hobo with ridiculous sums of money in his pockets. When he is treated disdainfully at restaurants or stores, he never makes a scene, he simply takes his thousands of dollars with which to dick around to somewhere that treats him respectfully because he is a customer, and not based on how he looks. YMMV, of course.

I am enjoying how the "introduce yourself" thread has gotten surlier than the P&R Arena. I hope we don't need a poll.

Honestly I think you guys are being a bit harsh on Serapth. Obviously judging people by how they look is wrong, but in a discussion about whether or not someone is hot...Everyone is going to have to make that decision based on a judgment.

When you go somewhere and decide to talk with someone new...how do you choose who? The only way for you to do so is by looks..and so everyone relies on pre-set judgements.

And who are you to insult those someone elses judgments on something? We all develop our own judgements based on our life and experiences.

For all you know, Serapth tried dating girls with crazy hair for a while, only to find that they weren't for him because of their rebellious nature).

I can guarantee that every one of you who is berating Serapth for his thoughts on this matter, have at one point or another judged someone unfairly.

You might not consider it judgment..but any time you choose not to stop and say hi to someone new...that's a judgment....you're comparing the time lost versus the % chance that they'll be worth talking to....and what are you using to base that on? looks.

Maybe its the guy who smells like he lives on the streets.

Or its the girl who is over or underweight (according to your thoughts on personal health)

As for the comments on professions...for as many exceptions there are to it....in most jobs that are considered serious profession....you'll have a certain standard that people are accustomed to. Yes, this is slowly changing ....but at this time the majority of people in those professions adhere to a very professional attire.

Yes we all make judgements and that is part down to the fact that we all make statements (often about our 'tribes') in the way we dress. You could make a number of judgements about the kind of music i like (even when i don't have a band t-shirt on) and other such things based on the way i dress and you'll likely be right. It's an inbuilt human tendency to want to belong to groups. Some one who is dress like me is likely going to have interests and likes in common with mine, doesn't mean that i'll like them as a person but it's often a good start.

And that's the point there identifiers and visible statements about who we are but only to an extent. Just like i can't tell that just because some one dresses like me i'll like them (i know some right assholes who do) you can't make a judgement on some ones intelligence... which is what i was taking issue with. Which is not to say that you can judge some one in a negative way if they are making a statement with the way they dress that is asking you to do so. Judging some one dressed like a local gang member in a negative way is not a stupid or wrong thing to do, it might not be true but it's what they are inviting you to do.

This also has nothing to do with making aesthetic judgements about some one since that is about your personal and individual tastes and has nothing to do with how smart you think the person is. Now don't get me wrong i like smart girls and smart girls are more attractive to me (any girl i fall for gets more and more attractive) but when presented with 2 photographs of 2 girls and asked to pick which one i find more attractive i can only do so based on my own sense of aesthetic taste. It could be that the hotter one is an evil bint and the less hot one is a girl i'd fall head over heels in love with but, again, the point is that i can't make that kind of judgement based on the way they look.

I better stop this is all getting a bit to much like philosophy and i'm sure my 5am ramblings on the matter are not all that coherent. But i think the points are that firstly making a judgement about what you find hot is fine. Secondly making a number of judgements about what some ones tastes are by the way they dress is fine but lastly that you can not tell if your going to like or hate some one or if they are smart of dumb based on something like there hair colour.

On another note if any of you've ever seen the stupid crap lawyers over here have wear at times it's not beyond reach it may have well been that blue hair was the mark of a lawyer... it's not less silly... it's just not how things went. It's a point to ponder. There is noting inherent in the way any of us dress that make it mean anything.

I agree that it is not a proper way to tell if you are going to like someone or their tastes. But in most situations (especially this one since all we have is a picture) the only way to judge some is via aesthetics. So I don't think Serapth is wrong for his point.

How is judging someone negatively because they wear gang-related colors different from judging someone with crazy hair as rebellious?

The gang related colors comes with context, you know from first hand experience that most people you meet who wear gang colors are dangerous...so someone who finds dangerous folks attractive, might say that person is attractive because of assumed attributes.

Same thing applies for judging someone with blue hair.

If Serapth has met 5 people with blue hair who are doing it to be rebellious, how is he wrong for making a snap judgment about that? He might think she's the hottest girl in the world...but since he has no other way to judge her personality other than that photo..he has to assume that the color indicates that she is going to be rebellious.

The point i was trying to make is that there are not just aesthetics involved here. You can firstly decided if you find her attractive. You can then make a number of judgements about the group that she wants to be identified with and what that means but you can not make a judgement about who she is. Which is if you'd like her or not, if she's cleaver or not or any other number of things.

How is judging someone negatively because they wear gang-related colors different from judging someone with crazy hair as rebellious?

but he didn't judge her as being rebellious he judged her at trying to be rebellious, trying to hard, and being stupid for doing so. That is not the same a judging some one as a gang member who wants to be identified as a gang member. Which covers most of your next point as well since it makes it moot.

He dose find her attractive, he said so but that is an aesthetic judgement. He then goes on to state that he thinks most people with blue hair are trying to hard and then to say that it's childish immature and she's stupid because it limits her job choices. Which is making a judgement based on nothing. Even if her hair had "i'm a rebel" shaved in to it he can not draw the rest of those conclusions no matter how many other people his met with the same thing have acted in that way.

Based purely on a picture you can easily make purely aesthetic judgements and depending on the statements there person in making with there clothing and other things you can make some judgements about there tastes, the group they like to be linked with and as such very very general ways of acting but that's vague at best and you can't do more than that. You can not judge that some one is stupid or not, nice or not based purely on a picture of them, you just can't.

To make it clear the girl with the blue hair is an artist, she likes blue, she has blue hair, she works hard at what she dose and is a nice enough girl. The girl with the black hair is much closer to kind of person Serapth was talking about. She's a handful and a lot more immature than the blue haired girl and is not as cleaver either. Both nice girls in there own ways but the wrong way around if we are going with Serapth judgement based on the hair colours.

Point is by taking his judgements too far past the point that they are viable or useful he has ended up with utterly wrong impression. And along the way has indirectly called me an idiot purely for the fact that i like odd coloured hair and sometimes do it if i can get away with it.

it's now 6am and i really should go to bed. Anyway i'm sure this will gone on for a bit but i think we may have derailed the thread enough at this point so i'm not going to make any more bit posts like this now i don't think unless some one wants to make it a P&R matter and start a new topic :P since the poll thread really doesn't cover the topic as such but a tangent about accepted looks in given jobs

Goddamn Hotcod. Two incredibly hot chicks in one post that you know IRL. That is some kind of record. Holy fuck do they melt the heart.

no comments about the recent family picture...I see how it is.
See, people usually post a pic of themselves that people can make fun of. But when you throw a kid in there (that's not Serapth's soon-to-be-overlordess daughter) it makes it kinda hard to comment. For example I post a picture of me and torre accuses me of being gay. Of course he's so hot for me his balls itch but he can still make a "witty" comment about me and it goes well. But it's hard to do that with a kid in the picture. About the only thing I would say is that you look like a nice, incredibly well-adjusted family. The kid is adorable, but give us a picture of you in a compromising position.

DROOL. Iced Chai w/ Soy.. Thats my drink right there.
Oh yes. Most definitely yes. For something better on the waistline do an iced-coffee with a soy topper. Less calories with all the goodness.

That's the most recent photo of me. Rare deal; I am usually pretty good at dodging cameras. In contrast to Mag's new haircut, my hair is actually more uncut than last time, by virtue of me not having cut it since then -- what a good way to be certain that the stuff stays long!

Also, it's me playing guitar. I'm not looking at the camera. So be it.

Oh, I think it's time we throw down and settle this once and for all in a variety of contests such that we can determine which Jacob has earned the name.

Until that day, consider me scrammed. (Why do you hate me?)

No pic of you is the same without a girl's head approaching your lap. Where is the girl in the pic?

Ah, behind the camera. This photo has been cropped, and the old center was indeed my manhood. I'm lying about that.

You should have seen the ladies at work today. They were falling all over themselves to tell me how "hot/sexy/cute/adorable" I look.

It's much shorter now. I felt it needed a reboot. I'm growing it out again. Can't wait.

It certainly feels nice and the lack of maintenance that it requires now in comparison is also welcome. Just that when I look at myself in the mirror, it doesn't look like me. It's now starting to become slightly uneven so it's certainly getting back to where it was thankfully.

I know what you mean. I'm definitely not used to seeing my hair how it is now, but it's growing on me. I'll probably try a few different styles until I settle on something that I can stick with for a while.

The longer hair was getting frustrating for me, as it looked like a disaster more often than not.

I always humor the idea of growing my hair again(once had it down to my shoulders) and the idea of the maintenance it required always pushes me away from it. My problem is that my hair is very thin and straight. I had to wash it and condition it every day and god forbid I used to much conditioner. It was more grooming a teenager had a right to concern himself about.

I prefer the lack of finesse I've implemented into my hairstyle in the last few years. If it gets too long, I just get a pair of scissors and start cutting away. It always seemed to work out.

My hair is very fine, but gets more and more wavy the longer it gets. I also have a big calic (sp?) in the back, so it's hard to get it to look decent sometimes. Shorter usually works better, but then I get the urge to grow it out again. It doesn't help that I have a huge forehead. :o

Huh. I always thought is was cowlick. Either way, I got one too. Got into a fight in middle school and the tool pulled a chunk of my hair out. Never grew the same. Guess it helps to have no discernible pattern.

Here's where I'm currently at:

You're right - cowlick makes a lot more sense, and it doesn't trigger Firefox's spell check. ;)

I like your hair the way it is now! I should do mine more like that - the faux hawk is cute and all, but I'm not sure I want to fuss over it every day.

So you guys know, once hair gets a few inches past shoulder length the maintenance is reduced drastically, can go days without washing it (which is good for your hair). It just goes everywhere and gets stuck in anything that it can get stuck in.

I had really oily hair, so I had to wash it every day. I do miss my long hair, but surprisingly shaving my head is less of a hassle.
