Anyone listen to IDM in hurrr?

I've been listening to a variety of IDM artists that are really, really, good including the following:

Gridlock
Hecq
Autechre
Displacer
Obfusc

Hecq, most notably. The albums Golden Pines and Night Falls are stunningly good music. He's got some other albums but I have not checked them out (yet).

Hopefully, I'll get Gorvi in here.

Mind telling me what IDM is? I may listen to some (I doubt it), but would never know :)

*looks at mp3 player*

What I would consider IDM that I'm currently listening to is as follows:
Clark - Body Riddle (http://www.throttleclark.com/bodyriddle/)
Aphex Twin (of course)
Venetian Snares

I will definately have to look into the artists you've suggested as my taste is all over the board.

IDM refers to Intellectual (or Intelligent) Dance Music. I don't really understand this term, to be honest. I don't get it because if one were to dance to it, you'd probably look like a person in the process of having a seizure.

Wikipedia does a better job of explaining it:

Intelligent dance music (commonly IDM) is a genre name invented in the early 1990s by the creators of an American online mailing list called the 'IDM list'. The IDM electronic mailing list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_mailing_list), created by Warp Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_Records) fan Alan Parry, characterized acts such as Aphex Twin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphex_Twin), Leftfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leftfield), FSOL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FSOL), Orb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orb), Orbital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_%28band%29), Black Dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Dog_Productions), and B12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B12_%28band%29) as intelligent dance music. The term was used to refer to a number of post-techno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-0) artists who were engaging in experimental electronic dance music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_dance_music) (EDM) production during the late 1980s and early 1990s.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-1) By 1992 Warp were marketing the music using the description electronic listening music but this was quickly replaced by intelligent techno. In the same period (1992–93) other names were also used, such as armchair techno, ambient techno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_techno), and electronica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronica),[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-2) but all were attempts to describe an emerging form of dance music for the sedentary and stay at home.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-3) Co-owner of Warp Records Steve Beckett has said that "the music was aimed at home listening rather than clubs and dance floors".[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-4) IDM tends to rely upon individualistic experimentation rather than on a particular set of musical characteristics.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_dance_music#cite_note-5)

Okay, gotcha. So the answer is, as I suspected, no. Although Aphex Twin is not bad, but still not something I would typically listen to home alone.

I recommend Orb, and especially their awesome live album from 1993, which also happen to have an awesome front cover:

The thing with Aphex Twin though is that his stuff is so incredibly varied. The comparison between Selected Ambient Works to something like Drukqs or any one of his Analord EPs is so drastic.

There's always a first time to everything. You should check out one of the above artists :).

I would also recommend Venetian Snares, and try out Telefon Tel Aviv. It's IDM that's also trancy, like it's underwater.

I don't know what IDM music really is either but from what i've seen in the thread so far, I guess it's like a hybrid of acid techno and trance music, or Euro Dance. I listen to it on the rare occaision. Some faves are:

Sqaurepusher
Autechre
Future Sound of London
Aphex Twin
Dj Shadow (or is he Drum 'N Bass I can never figure these electronica genres out)
Kraftwerk (pioneers)
Orbital (cause it was mentioned earlier)

And then the stuff on Mixes for Cash is almost poppy.

Amon Tobin is really good. I've been listening to Burial quite a bit. Howie B. does a nice job of integrating the dub influences buried in IDM, and if that interests you, check out King Tubby, Scratch Perry, and Mad Professor. I'll second Ninja Tune as an awesome label.

Did you guys see this Coldcut mix for the elections?

If you like Gridlock, you should check out the project of Mike Cadoo after the breakup called Bitcrush. It continues in the style of the last few albums of Gridlock.

You could check out other stuff on his label n5md and the accompanying digital-only label enpeg digital. Personally I really enjoy subtractiveLAD.

Also along similar lines is the band Mnemonic. Their first album was apparently more industrial, though I haven't heard it. Their more recent stuff is excellent.

Didn't think IDM was really about anymore, thought it had all moved into minimal.
