Hey I know there is a l4d thread but I thaught it seemed more about how the gameplay is great and it is, I love the game. But is any one else bothered by the "I wanna be xbox live" match making for versus? I understand it for the campaign mode since you want full parties but am I the only one that wants a normal source style server list?

It's not perfect but it seems to get the job done. I feel it takes to long to join a server. It seems really sluggish.

I haven't had a problem with it, but I never play with pubbies or anything. I also always host the matches that I play in.

I don't think a server-list would work, really. It would be too hard to be able to play with who you want to play with, when you want to play with them.

If that makes any sense.

Initially I really didn't like it, and I'm sure that once mods / extra maps come out I'll dislike it again (unless Valve finds a way to change it).

But with the size of my friends list, I am really enjoying how easy it is to quickly see who is playing and if I can join them.

However Valve does need to redo some of the networking code, or at least let the host pick a dedicated server based on ping..because there have been a few times where we join a game and the ping is terrible, or ones where it turns out the server admin doesn't want us there and kicks us.

I can see why they went the lobby system; the player cap is so low that servers would fill up before your friends could get in, but the search criteria needs some work. I don't want to connect to a dedicated server in Russia, and I don't want to connect to a modded versus server that has the difficulty cranked up to expert.

Or connect to a dedicated server only to be kicked off immediately by admins.

I'm of the thought that if you're not playing with friends, and friends of friends, you're doing it wrong.

It is a fantastic system if you're playing with friends but if you're looking to play with people you don't know, it is one of the worst. I want a server list, damnit.

It's been posted before, you can pull up the server list from the console..

"openserverlist" or something like that.

I haven't tried this (at work) but can you pull up the unified server list outside of the game via the Steam client?

Probably...must be available through the server browser...with the right filters.
