We all know the game; good old, classic RISK.
Share tales of your exploits, and maybe strategies in here. Personally, I always open up with a grab for Australia. That may change this Friday. Tourney for the whole floor.

Have you heard about the updated risk that should be coming out sometime soon? Hasbro sent out a bunch of preview sets a while ago called Risk: Black Ops. It looked awfully sexy and I am sad they are going back to regular colors for the retail version.

There's some updated version of risk floating around already, with a modified rulebook including things like capitols that might be what you're talking about. I'm not going to touch it with a ten foot pole, though. I can't find classic RISK in stores anymore, though.
Glad to see I'm not the only person here that RISKs

All I want is RISK on Live, it kind of defeats the purpose, I know, but so many board gmaes would make great Live titles just as Uno did.

I have not played a normal game of risk in years. We usually use some variant of the rules. But that's why it rocks. You can do so much.

Yeah, I love messing with Risk. My best friend and I once played a game that lasted over 12 hours with navies, hidden nuclear missile silos, a Risk map we traced and divided into air quadrants, and two neutral armies that attacked everyone all the time.
When you're 15, nothing is more epic than nuking your opponents Madagascarian stronghold.

I completely agree with you here. Seeing that black ops version, then finding out I'll never have one, then on top of that finding out the version I'll have looks like a circus... Argh. Very poor decision by Hasbro.
On the other hand, I'm very anxious to play the new ruleset. I hear it's quite good.

I've had my fair share of long games, but sometimes the games we play get blurred and they feel so much longer than they really are.

You've got to be kidding. Did they really confirm they were ditching the colors of the preview sets? That really sucks. No wonder the limited editions from GenCon are going crazy on eBay.
At least the rules are solid. I've never been one for updated versions of classics, but Black Ops is incredibly cool.

I almost hate to admit it but I've never played a real game of Risk in my life :(
I've played Axis and Allies though if that helps redeem things at all

I had an epic victory once that involved forming an alliance with one of the other two guys, telling them which way to take their army and then using that path as my road to victory against the third player who was winning the game.

Risk, that's like diplomacy, right?

Ah... the lazy man's way to win. A friend of mine seems to always get both Australia cards on first deal.. even with different people shuffling.
The last game of Risk! i played with 3 other people and we tried Mission Risk for the first time. I was able to talk my way to sharing common borders and kept up my good faith slowly taking over other areas until my common border alliance free moved out of her spot to strengthen a different border. My next turn i swooped in and took it over for a 'Mission: Capture and hold 18 areas'.
Have Risk!(original), Risk 2010, and Risk Star Wars (though the latter 2 haven't been played yet)

A bit. Diplomacy is more socially involved, less luck reliant, and also has the mysterious side effect of making you lose any friends you decide to play it with. :D

I also got Risk Godstorm for christmas one year, but we never quite figured out how to play it. The rules are confusing as hell. Should have gotten 2010.

Risk drives me insane!
Why are you attacking me in North America??! We have been friends for so long! Why are you listening to the guy who owns most of Asia?!? Can't you see what he is trying to do? He's going to win if you don't attack him! Why can't I roll over a two?
Great game, just takes too damn long to play.

I've tried playing it in accelerated formats, but the length of that game just adds to the pleasure of winning.

There was a time where my brother wouldn't shut up about Risk 2010. I REALLY want to play it, as I love the original Risk. We don't play it enough here - mostly 'cause the female roommates don't like it, and 2-player Risk just isn't as fun.

A group of friends and i circle back to A&A or Risk around the holidays. This year interest seems to be in one of the risk variants. Id love to hear more opinions on these.

I hate your kind. Picking on my people, the proud defenders of Madagascar. We will never surrender to you!
In all honesty, I always shoot for Madagascar. I'll sacrifice everything to capture it, then arm it to the teeth. I have no clue why, though. Its got zero strategic value. I just love to taunt my enemies, bragging about my strong hold on Madagascar and cracking jokes about sending hissing beetles to destroy them. This probably has alot to do with why I never seem to win.

I was once down to 1 territory, in Eurasia, because the enemy miscalculated their route, and I had hot dice, pulled out the win. They were in awe.
Why hasn't this been made availabe on XBLA yet. A travesty!
I've honestly never played Risk but Axis and Allies on LIVE would make me dance.
That would also be a great edition to XBLA. I used to play Dogs of War a lot, and there is a stable build available on sourceforge somewhere.

The other day, some people showed me something awesome: http://conquerclub.com
I play a lot of Risk, now. More than I ever used to. Even though it's online, I tend to just play with guys from my floor. It does away with the time issues, because when somebody has to stop, everyone can walk away knowing nobody's going to touch the game board while it's on the table, so to speak.

We have an old version that uses various wooden blocks for the armies, and a funny looking whale with a hat swimming in the water. I always find it entertaining when the alliances finally break and all hell breaks lose; some people get so upset!

I love Risk!! I haven't played in years, but it was a hit with my friends and I when we were kids. I won the majority of the games, and eventually it got to the point where they didn't want to play against me. :p
I miss those days. :( Board games on Live are fun, but it just isn't the same.

Oh we loved it. We loved Madagascar so much we shelled it into nothing but volcanic glass repeatedly so that we could fight for the honor of holding onto it. How we managed that I don't know, but it was always where the buildup of epic armies began.
Board games are weird.

I haven't played a game of Risk in years... I remember back in college we got a 6 player game together that lasted all night and I came out on top. My strategy was beer and mindgames with the opponents. In the end, worked like a charm.
I got LoTR Risk as a Christmas gift a few years back, but never played the version they had in the rules (we mixed the new rules with the classic ones for a pretty fun game). I definitely have a soft spot for Risk and have pretty much always played whenever I had the chance.

i always go for South America first...even though Australia looks like a safer bet i find that there's far more accessibility from South America with being too exposed (only two entries). If you're able to take control of North America afterward then you will be a position to dominate every time...at least in my opinion.

Same here. No one, friends or family will play strategy games with me. I always win, and I do tease them mercilessly while I do it though. Maybe that is why they don't want to play. Family also changes rules in games so they can win and I lose. Cheaters!!
Axis & Allies is also fun. I have played that late into the night as well.
Both those games would absolutely ROCK on XBL.
