Today a game that I've been eagerly waiting for finally gets it's release, SOL Exodus.

IzaGImcs_4Y

The lead designer of the game was the man who helped design Freespace and it shows in the game. It mixes the controls and gameplay of Descent with the action, story and style of Wing Commander. As a proper space combat game should, it features full joystick and controller support as standard. It's on Steam for $9.99 and even from the 15 minutes I got to play it for, I was extremely impressed.

I figured I'd make a thread to plug it since I know there's a few people who loved the old 90's space combat games on the forum.

Looks interesting, and it's cheap.., but well, there's only 8 missions, but it seems to be worth it :)

This is out? Yesssss

Wow, that trailer really does look like Freespace. I'm excited. I don't get to use my joystick nearly enough these days.

This is to Seamless what Torchlight is supposed to be to Runic, a short game they put out to bring in funds and test out a much larger game that's in the works.

Short is short but a good price.

Does it at least have a random battle or skirmish mode? Very cool.

Damn, I can't get my joystick going with this. The config doesn't have enough options.

Someone on the steam forum (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=28760363) is saying they plan to make more joysticks compatible pretty quickly. It looks like mine currently is one that's known to have issues, so I'll wait a bit.

The 360 controller will work natively with the game, that's the control method they were demoing the game with at PAX since they were hoping for a future XBLA release.

This game plays best with Keyboard and Mouse, the analog controls on the 360 pad are a bit off. We should see an update for this by the end of next week.

The game isn't bad but it's a very simple arcade style space shooter, don't go in with dreams of Freelancer or freespace and you should enjoy it. It's completely worth the $10 but It's pretty short thankfully it's going to be episodic so we should start seeing new content soon enough.

Also, one of the head designers on this game used to work for Volition and while this is not the Freespace comeback he's been wanting to do if it does well enough and creates enough of a demand the funds from it could be used to actually make a AAA modern space shooter so keep your fingers crossed.

sorry to get a little off the original topic but ive never played freelancer or the freespace games and actually have been wondering if it would be worth going back and playing them? (considering they are only ~6 on gog)

Definitely. Get Freespace 2 and then download the open-source update. http://scp.indiegames.us/

Both are worth it. Freespace has that massive upgrade and open package.

Freelancer with either the:
Discovery mod
Tegashi's Treasure mod
Crossfire mod(Some say this is too hard)

Is a whole new game. Also the Crossfire team released their unofficial expansion for Freelancer. Redon singleplayer original missions and effects + 21 more missions with full voice acting and so forth. They are 100% a developer unto themselves.

SOLD!

Hell, it's worth the money just as an investment in the genre.

I was also tempted to put in that he was the main Design Director for the first Saint's Row just before he left Volition but I wasn't sure if that was a positive or negative for most people (I however love the SR series)

Something about the graphics seemed off to me, but I cannot put my finger on it. Bought anyway, even if only to support the dev.

The textures are low resolution and they lack detail. Because we are used to seeing games that use the Unreal Engine 3 with significantly higher quality textures this looks a bit off to us.

hopefully the money they make from this will allow them to increase the quality of their next game.

Yep, I think that's what it is. Still, hard to complain for $10.
