From Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=308127):
The conservation boffins at National Geographic have created a studio to make videogames based on topics covered in the popular magazine and on the telly show.

The first of these - Herod's Lost Tome for PC, Mac and iPhone - will compliment the December topic of King Herod.

National Geographic Games will create titles for other platforms such as Wii and PS3 in the future, and will also seek partnerships with various videogame publishers.

National Geographic Panda is the first example of this, and will arrive on DS in the US later this month. It's supposed to be a bit like Nintendogs crossed with Zoo Tycoon.

Former Bethesda and Take-Two exec Chris Mate has taken the post of general manager at the studio.

I think this actually has a lot of potential for educational games, that are still fun to play. However, delivering on that potential is another matter entirely, and I fear this could just end up as some shovelware.

I'll definitely give one a try

There's no limit to the interesting stuff they could use for inspiration, although I fully expect 80% to be about dinosaurs or ancient Egypt. Or dinosaurs attacking ancient Egypt.

Let's hope that last one has co-op ;)

Can we have a MegaStructures game?

How 'bout Future Weapons? Or is that Discovery?

Actually a "seconds from disaster" game could be interesting.

I personally vote for a Dog Whisperer game. It would be like Nintendog's but cooler. Can I get a here, here?

Some of the clearest memories I have from elementary school involved the educational software we got to play with on Computer Day, aka Friday.

Oregon Trail, Math Race, Lemonade Stand, Word Munchers...awesome stuff. I really think there's a lot of untapped potential for educational games, although it could be that educational games are still used to great effect in elementary schools and I just don't know it.

I remember playing some kind of National Geographic quiz game on the school's library computers, around 1995. (CD-ROM game, probably for Windows.)
