View Full Version : What Universe would you live in?

If you could pick any universe from games to books to movies to live in, where would you pick? Middle Earth, Marvel Universe, Mushroom Kingdom, Mass Effect, Hyrule, Firefly, or the land of Bollywood music videos where people sing and dance in the street? Maybe the land of impossible boob physics where the girls from Dead or Alive live.

3. Vampire Hunter D. But not as a weakling human. Either as a vamp or a vamp hunter.

I almost said DCU but;
If you live in Gotham, you have life expectancy of 25 with 'stabbed by maniacal clown' the leading cause of death.
If you live in Coast City, Mongul will come and destroy all of the city or Sinestro will drop a yellow thingamajog on your building.
If you live in Fawcett City, it's kinda nice and calm and peaceful, except when the universal reboot happens and you are wiped off existence because your superhero is better than Superman.
If you live in Star City...

If I had to be me, like I just pop into the universe in a place of my choosing, I would say Star Trek and live on Earth. Great medical advances, lots of fun stuff to do, no need to worry about money. I doubt that I would be a very productive citizen, but whatever. Probably too old and out of shape to join Star Fleet.
If I could be someone else, or altered in some way, I would choose The Chronicles of Amber and be a Prince of Amber. Immortality? Check. Super human strength and rejuvenation? Check. Ability to go wherever the fuck I want? Check. Hell, as a Prince of Amber I could probably stroll into the Star Trek setting without issue, and run the whole place. I'm not terribly ambitious either, so I don't think I would run into too much trouble with the rest of the family.
I suppose the world of Looney Toons wouldn't be so bad either, if I could be a toon.

Sci-Fi: Mass Effect - Preferably after Mass Effect 3, when the biggest threat to the galaxy will presumably be over.
Yeah, it's not as peaceful as Star Trek, but I think the aliens, technology, and style are more interesting. The galaxy is a lot more connected, and you can go from one end to the other in a matter of hours. No wormholes needed, no getting stuck in the Delta Quadrant for years.
Also, while there is a lot of death, there are also trillions of people/aliens. The death tolls from the various wars and other conflicts are just scaled up from normal.
Runner-up: Firefly
Fantasy - The Mushroom Kingdom - Yeah, I'm classifying it as fantasy. Deal with it. Sure, depending on the game there's modern technology, but largely the universe is filled with castles and caves and fantastical creatures. Most traditional fantasy universes are pretty sucky for the average person.
The only downside would be the shortage of human women that aren't already dating plumbers.
Runner-up: Azeroth (Warcraft)

Peter Hamilton's Confederation. Edenists would be my preference (genetically-engineered cetacean starships!), but Adamists would be cool too. Just so long as it's before the whole "unstoppable Satanic plague of tortured souls from beyond the grave" thing, that was a huge downer.

Yes! That universe would be high on my list. However, I think I'd go with the Dan Simmon's Hyperion Cantos universe. If I could work it so that I could experience the whole timeline, with all it's different phases, that would be ideal.
The people who have read the entire series know what I'm talking about. I would want to see the high-tech awesome sci-fi world at the beginning, then experience the way things end up. The ending of that series is one of the most beautiful and intriguing scenarios I've ever read.
On a completely different tack, how awesome is the universe of the Blues Brothers? Terrifying nuns, acrobatic church services, great music, and arguably the most elaborate auto accidents ever imagined. Although the Illinois Nazis might be annoying.

I can't believe no one has yet mentioned the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance version of Ivalice, yet.
Here's why it would be more awesome than anything else:
1.) ANYONE can learn to use magic. Anyone.
2.) If you have problems IRL, they will not exist in Ivalice. For example, if you're a paraplegic stuck in a wheelchair IRL, in Ivalice, you can run and walk just as good (with magic, potentially better) as any normal person.
3.) Want to be a badass? You're in luck! Just take on any job at the local tavern and fight your way to fame and fortune. And you won't have to worry about a short life expectancy as a result of such a lifestyle, because
4.) NO DEATH, at least not in battle; the judges may make stupid rules about how you fight, but unless you go to a Jagd (where there are no judges), you will NEVER have to worry about getting killed, ever. Dying of old age? Sure, until someone figures out a way to stop that, or at least extend your lifespan. But that would take ma--oh, yeah:
5.) ANYONE CAN USE MAGIC.
Put me up for that.

Funny thing, the coolness of the universe is based on you not being the regular guy still. I mean it would be like being a tax accountant in the Fifth Element. Working your whole life just to get a cruise to Fhloston Paradise when you retire. Fuck that shit.
My choice: Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, as long as I was a bender. I'd be adverse to being a fire bender cause their power lacks much room for creativity. Fire, lightening and what ever combustion man was doing. And every 100 years you could create some serious propulsion and fly around. And that was probably only limited to the Fire King. Where as the other kids was always learning and coming up with new ways to use their bending. Ok, Air was kind of weaksauce as well as far as creativity goes, but he could at least glide.
Regardless, any of them would do but the Earthbenders seem to have the most fun. Water being a close second, if you had the water.

I think any apparently lack in creativity of the styles was simply a lack of time to showcase more--or, in airbending's case, a complete lack of other airbenders to study advanced technique. When you consider that waterbenders of enough power and discipline can learn to bend blood, there's a lot of potential for other techniques, especially if you can bend more than one element--in fact, I was a little disappointed that they didn't show Aang combining disciplines more directly more often.

To be honest, I think I'd have to go with Star Trek, in TNG's era, or perhaps (perhaps) the rebooted universe. I'm not sure if I would enlist in Starfleet, but there's enough in that society to keep me running around in excitement for the rest of my life.
I also think something similar to Mega Man: Battle Network or Tron would be pretty cool, where you can beam into a (heavily abstracted) computer or networks and buzz around--with the whole "you die in Canada, you die in real life!" downside eliminated.
Of course, picking TNG also means I can play out that universe or any other in a holodeck, so there you go...
Shadow run Magic check. Threat of being eaten or bought by a multi billion dollar corporate dragon check. Sacrificed to blood mages check. Plugging into cyber space and getting my brain turned to ooze by the newest virus check. Replacing half your body with cybernetics check.
Babylon 5. I just liked their ship designs and they had some really cool aliens.

But isn't that feeling of lack of significance part of life on earth?
The Culture novels, if you notice seem to be about epic adventures, but aside from a couple of them, they aren't really that special of occasions.
I'd rather live in the Culture, as it's a society where your life's significance and meaning is based on your own definitions and your interactions with others. Yay for a non-zero sum setting.

Guys, the answer is obvious.
Think about it. Dune is awesome, so is Avatar, so are many others. But you just live in those universes, man. There's no guarantee you get to be the big Dick playa on the scene. Ain't gonna be no Muad-dib in this motherfucker.
The answer is Pokemon.
Pokemon. Everybody gets to have Pokemon. You turn ten, BAM. you get sent off with some cash and a starter Pokemon. You're expected to travel the world. And you never have to worry about money, because you have this whole shadow economy based on fighting battles and getting cash.
Need a place to stay? You can sleep and eat for free at the Pokemon center. Get caught in a storm? That just means you triggered a flag, you're gonna find a rare Pokemon. You can do this job you're whole life and people won't think you're a failure. You never have to mature. It's like being Peter fucking Pan.
Plus, the ratio of girls to guys? Freaking insane. Lots of single mothers in that show, too. Hitting and quitting must be common practice.
Ain't no guns in kanto. Officer Jenny's only armed with handcuffs and a scowl.
Ain't no disease. Hell, they can cure a dead Pokemon with a healing machine. What kind of medical care you wanna bet they have for humans?
Ain't no wars. People get that aggression out in Pokemon battles.

Ok ok I'm convinced Pokemon. Kristen Bell can be the chick version and Sting can be the rival.

Yeah. The more I think of it, Pokemon sounds damn nice. Star Trek could be dangerous if you wear the wrong color shirt on a landing party.

Kristin Bell and Sting are members of Team Rocket. With Vern Troyer as Meowth.
You're welcome.

I think this should have said what "Nice safe universe would you live in?" I instantly thought of the hard, amazing, dangerous places, and thought those would be amazing. I would never want to live in ST versus B5. B5 is strife, war, and picking your sagging ass up and trying to become a commander, or a flyer, or one of the people living in Down Below hahahahaha.

Bah, call me Kosh of the Vorlons bitch.
Let me be one of the first ones, or let me be a part of the B5 universe, when Earth's Sun final goes boom. I loved that episode. Humans in an exosuit from Vorlon!

I still think FFTA's Ivalice is the best one. Think about it: MAGIC. FOR EVERYONE. NO DEATH. BE A NINJA!

Death is permanent there. You can lose units unless you're a proper named character.

No, not unless you're in Jagd. Judges prevent ALL death on battlefields, regardless of who is there. Montblanc himself said so in FFTA.

RIGHT. I was thinking of the other game that ditched that mechanic. FFTA USA good choice, but even if you play a beastmaster, your choice of monsters to train is pretty limited.
