Are you sitting down? Good. Now brace yourself.

Huxley will not be launching in North America this year.

Now, once you've recovered from the shock, let me fill in the details. Huxley is an MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first person shooter for the acronym impaired) which was announced sometime back in the early Mesozoic era (either that or 2005). Back then it was seen as an ambitious effort to make a truly genre smashing game. Somewhere along the way the wheels came off, and the game retreated into the mists, emerging occasionally to tease game journalists and exsanguinate some cows. It also morphed into a free-to-play, browser-based game in the last year or so. It was also sold by it's original Korean developer to a Chinese developer last year for quite a chunk of change. While it hasn't quite achieved a Duke Nukem Forever level of infamy, it's still something of a cautionary tale. A cautionary tale which will not be making it's debut this year (it is in beta in Korea however).

No, I can't explain my fixation with this game. It seems like such a cool idea - an MMOFPS - but to date no one has really done it well. Maybe the genre doesn't scale well beyond the Battlefield level?

Good, if does happen to be great I can't afford another game in que, nor would I have the time anyhows. Enough is enough with the games. Kinda cool I can say that and mean it.

We are spoiled this gen for sure.

This shit is vaporware. The original screens and concepts looked amazing but... I doubt we'll ever get a hold of this in a form that is true to the original vision. They bit off more than they could chew.

Man, I remember first hearing the details about this years ago and thinking it sounded quite neat. The videos they released a while back didn't do much for me though.

So I should probably check on that $5 I gave Gamestop for this game a few years back shouldn't I?

I kid, I kid. And yes, I know this spoiler text is counting on you using the dark theme. If you aren't : shhhhhhhhh.

Maybe MS should helped get this out instead of fucking around with a Halo MMO. I don't think they really want to do a console MMO for some reason. Always canceling their own.

I really, really want this to be good. I will be disappointed, I'm fairly certain.
Hey, the longer it takes the better the end result, right? Right?

After shit like Kwari, I am getting really scared of the MMOFPS idea. Most shooters are about as massive as any MMO instance, anyway(30-60 players).

I was really looking forward to a replacement for Planetside back when this was first announced. Gave up on it a while ago though.

Why are MMOFPSs so rare? I mean, there are a ridiculous number of shooters out there, and people seem to want to make MMOs. Seems strange that combining the two has been passed by so much.

You wanna make the net code for the level of combat detail people expect from a FPS these days, go right ahead.

Secondly, I never said it would be easy, but it seems like an obvious gametype to attempt. Planetside played pretty well, and that was back when the net wasn't nearly as fast as it is today.

Huxley is such a cute dog.

I also saw this as a Planetside replacement. I'd never have imagined that we'd still be waiting for it now.
Although perhaps "waiting for it" isn't quite accurate, given that I'd forgotten all about it until it came up here a few days ago.

Combat detail.

Ever use a Spyglass or Eagle Eye in WoW? Takes awhile for it load up what you're looking at. There's a long range firefight issue right there, as Corpse Explosion taught us when you keep increasing a circle the area it covers increases exponentially.

Still, good of you to bring up WoW, a game where they removed just about all the precision they could. You have a target, you press a skill, it checks if you have line of sight and are in range, the end. Whether you miss or whatever is based on an internal dice roll.

A FPS, well you got collision detection on attacks to contend with (only recently done in Age of Conan) on top of that location damage. Get yourself a machine gun and suddenly you've got a lot of bullets to contend with over what has to be a pretty substantial distance because if you spend all your time in corridors why not just play a normal FPS then. Not to mention lag issues and the accuracy problems that causes.

Savok... RAAAGE!

You mean most of the issues that Planetside already faced and overcame?

Also, AoC wasn't the first (by a long shot) to implement collision. :p

You mean most of the issues that Planetside already faced and overcame? What he said. Planetside was definitely playable in large scale battles and I can attest to the effectiveness of the sniper rifle. Sure, you had to lead shots and there was some luck involved due to the lag. That was back in 2003, and I'm fairly certain hardware has improved since then, both in player's PC and over the net.

I used to play Planetside fine on my old 1mb connection (it may have even been slower than that at the time, I don't really remember). The only time I ever got lag was if somebody on my LAN decided to start downloading.
And I was rubbish at sniping on Planetside, but that wasn't the game's fault. I just couldn't get the hang of having to hold my scope in one place for a while before it became accurate. I'm way too used to the twitch style sniping of just about every other game out there.

Now I kind of want to play Planetside again, but I swore I'd never go back until the BFRs were gone, and since that is and never was going to happen, I won't go back.
When they promised us "heavy tanks" I didn't think they meant nigh indestructible flying robots of doom. :D

Huxley not coming out is not a shocker.

I played Planetside fine on my 5 gig capped 90-100kbps line without lag.

I'm also in the same boat with BFR's. While running a BFR hit squad is kind of fun, it just didn't make sense for me to be BR 20/CR5 and need two other guys to take out some drooling monkey that just started the game. The amount of communication, coordination, and skill required to overcome a single player who was just pointing and clicking mindlessly was just too lop-sided.

That kind of effort imbalance just kills gameplay. That said, killing some BFRetard with a 3 man Liberator drop team and having them relog onto Vanoob to bitch at us was kind of awesome.
