The report says that Braun submitted a urine sample during the playoffs, which showed elevated levels of testosterone - synthetic testosterone. Synthetic testosterone, as in not natural testosterone. Players aren't supposed to have that.

If the finding is upheld, Braun will be suspended for 50 games for a first-time offense. Braun, naturally, is very strongly denying any intentional wrongdoing on his part, and he could very well be correct. I don't know. There's no way for me to know right now whether or not this was a conscious decision. His spokesman says there was "no intentional violation of the program". But in order to successfully appeal the suspension - which no MLB player has ever done - Braun can't just prove negligence. He has to prove that something he ingested was, say, tampered with, or something like that.

Any player that thinks they can still get away with using PEDs needs to be banned for longer than the 50 games. It's beyond stupid anymore.

The problem is often the question of what is legal or not. You could go to your average health store and come up with equal parts of each.

Screw it. At this point they should just let baseball players roid up. They are all doing it anyway.

What is their position on Pro-hormones, Tribbulis , and so forth? Those are on store shelves. I am not sure how you stop someone from taking something at your local weight lifting shop.

My guess is if it's not forbidden to take now it might be in the near future.

Edit: Just did some fast reading on prohormones. Some are considered banned substances but most of them are not. I wonder how far banning substances will go in sports for a substance that enhances performance in anyway.

Here is a list of banned substances for those wondering.

I'm not sure how up to date that list is, but there are things that are readily available to the public that are banned too. I remember an article during the regular season about how they banned some deer antler product because of certain chemicals in contained.

Ya I have taken the nonbanned ones. The reason for the question is because, the creation of prohormones, if you study their history, is a unique situation in time. Basically to remove them from the market, you have to literally chance the market as their creation and use in the body is unique compared to other substances. Very interesting.

Wow...Thanks! That is CRAZY! I can't believe how far it has come in banning substances.

More on the Ryan Braun positive test situation on Sunday, which comes as something of a surprise given that everything's supposed to be all hush-hush for the time being. God bless anonymous sources! Saturday night, it got out that Braun had tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, showing up as elevated (synthetic) testosterone in a urine sample. But now we have a report that Braun didn't test positive for a PED after all. Rather, via Ken Rosenthal:

Braun tested positive for a prohibited substance, not a performance-enhancing drug.

It looks like he might NOT have tested positive for PEDs, but just an illicit substance. So instead of being a cheat, he might just have not been too smart when celebrating his great regular season?
