Huge, massive purchase of one of the biggest sports conglomerations was completed today. Rogers Communications Inc. and BCE Inc. (Bell) purchased 75% of the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment group (NHL's Maple Leafs, NBA's Raptors, AHL's Marlies and MLS' TFC) from the Teachers Pension Plan Fund, in the amount of $1.32 billion. Yes, $1.32 BILLION! Both parties are splitting the 75% share 50/50.

Huge deal, hopefully this means a better product for the Raptors, Leafs, Marlies and TFC. Strange too that both Bell and Rogers who are major competitors in Canada now own the same company essentially. Stranger still is Bell also is a minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens who are one of the Leafs long standing rivals in the NHL.

Thoughts??

We also have Rogers being the namesake of the arena for the Canucks.

I'm not sure I like these companies having so many different stakes in teams, but I'm happy to see them helping the NHL thrive.

I can't wait for some ownership drama to unfold down the line with the equal share. It's bound to happen.

Yes and I think something has to happen with Bell owning 18% of the Habs too (playing at the Bell Center lol). I believe it's illegal to do that. I could be wrong though.

I heard that does not need to change. No reasoning, just that it was "OK".

I find it extremely strange that these companies are working together on this. They are essentially each other's only competitors in our duopoly system for media.

I guess they wanted to keep their duopoly. If a major network came in and bought the shares, then all of Bell's/Rogers sports channels would be useless.

Speaking of useless, I guess Hockey Night in Canada is in big trouble once their current contract expires and all of the Leafs games are moved off of the CBC.

They buy the games directly from the NHL. The NHL has control over those games.

To those non Canadians reading this thread, Rogers and BCE represent the phone/wireless/internet duopoly in Canada.

Yeah, competition is dead and this is why their services are bullshit and (literally) getting worse.

Like the recent 4g offerings, that are 15$ more a month and still have the same usage rates as 3g. That the CRTC has done nothing shows how well protected Canadian consumers are...

I just use Sasktel for all my "communication" needs (T.V. Internet etc.). Go go socialist province. (Couldn't actually get service from either of them if I wanted to.) Well I guess I could get bell satellite.

Telus and Shaw are also competitors, though they don't have nearly the clout to buy the Toronto Fucking Maple Leafs.
