... what with him being dead for almost 52 years, so I'm going to try quitting smoking.

Initial supplies? Two bottles acetaminophen, one pound Puerto Rican grounds, twelve pack diet cola, large jar peanut butter, large tub jelly, large bag of bagels (parmesean and poppy seed), and a pile of workout stuff to do.

Pray for me. More precisely, pray that I do not lose my mind during any job interviews this week.

Off to smoke, then flush the rest of the pack. See y'all tomorrow. Advice is welcome. Shit-talk even more welcome.

Concentrate on how much money you'll be saving. I don't know how much you spend on cigarettes, but use some of the money you now save, set it aside and after a week or so, buy yourself something with it. Candy, a movie, whatever.

Advice? Don't drive with me while you're trying to quit smoking. Seriously. I'll tell you why. When my wife(at the time my GF) was helping me move from Michigan to Kansas, we started out after a huge snow storm, leaving the roads covered in snow... which covered up he slick ice on the road.
We were talking, I took my eyes off the road to look at her, and she screamed. I looked at the road to see my car was losing control and fishtailing. I tried to regain control but overcompensated and ended up in the ditch/snowbank.
After we got my car towed to the nearest gas station, she ran to the counter, bought a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, and hurriedly began smoking to calm her frayed nerves. I don't blame her one bit.

Why did I tell you that? Hell it kept ya from thinking about wanting a smoke for a few minutes, eh? ;)

Unfortunately everyone finds their own path to quitting, just as they found their own path to starting. The only thing I can tell you is you'll only succeed if you're determined and actually WANT to quit.

I'd replace it with a certain, less-damaging, less-addictive, more-fun substance. The name eludes me, but I'm pretty sure Tom Petty has a song about it...

I'm sorry, but you're delusional. Steve McQueen was The Man! He was just as bad-ass off screen as he was in character.

Try to avoid situations where you would have pulled out a cigarette. Odd story. Years ago, a friend of mine had quit smoking in the spring. All summer long and all through the fall he kept his act together and stayed clean. One day in the winter we drove up to the mountains to go skiing. We got our gear on, got on the chairlift and he started taking off his gloves. He realized that although he hadn't smoked in over 7 months, lighting up a cigarette was the first thing he had always done when he got on the chair. His subconscious took over for a moment but he held strong. I pulled out my flask and we toasted his quitting smoking.

Stay Strong! My Father quit after about 52 years of smoking, but it was too late for him.

We'll let history decide:

Coming up with no other career options, Bogart followed his love for the sea and enlisted in the United States Navy in the spring of 1918. He recalled later, “At eighteen war was great stuff. Paris! French girls! Hot damn!” Bogart is recorded as a model sailor who spent most of his months in the navy after the Armistice was signed, ferrying troops back from Europe.

In 1947, McQueen joined the United States Marine Corps and was quickly promoted to Private First Class and assigned to an armored unit. Initially, he reverted to his prior rebelliousness, and as a result was busted to Private on seven different occasions. Additionally, he went AWOL by failing to return after a weekend pass had expired. He instead stayed away with a girlfriend for two weeks, until the shore patrol caught him. He responded to his captors by resisting them and as a result spent 41 days in the brig.

Who's the MAN? :p

Sorry but going AWOL and generally acting like a dick doesn't strike me as being "the man".

Okay.
After this, McQueen resolved to focus his energies on self-improvement and embraced the Marines' discipline. He saved the lives of 5 other Marines during an Arctic exercise, pulling them from a tank before it broke through ice into the sea. He was also assigned to an honor guard responsible for guarding then-US President Harry Truman's yacht. McQueen served until 1950 when he was honorably discharged.
You guys aren't any fun anymore! :p

$4 a pack a day times thirty days = what the hell have I been spending my money on this for?

Oh, right, it looks cool. Speaking of cool, I kind of lost it today while meeting up with my father. So, first day equals four smokes. Shit. I guess RB gets four kittens worth of guts on his boots. But I'm hoping that'll be it for today.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. Off to rehearsal, DS has a full charge, should be good.

Flavored toothpicks. Get the ones that use Tea Tree Oil, they taste really good, and have a long lasting flavor.

They say the first day is the hardest, but for me, it's the tail end of the first week. It's easy to quit when you're coughing, wheezing, out of breath, broke, reeking like shit and generally feeling like your life is burning away in time with the tip of your cigarette. It's a week later when I'm feeling like my lungs are clear and the cigarettes don't seem as menacing that I say "well I can have just one when I'm drinking", I take a drag, get a HUGE buzz, and all of a sudden I'm right back to buying packs again.

For me, it's not so much the nicotine as it is the physical act of smoking. I've got all kinds of nervous habits, like biting my fingernails, chewing pens, chewing the drawstring of my sweatshirts, fiddling with stuff, shaky knees...smoking plays right into my constant need to nervously fidget with something. If you have that problem, find something else to occupy your hands.

Friendly suggestion: don't occupy your hands with slapping asses and double gun pointing. Bail costs more than cigarettes.

Quitting smoking is hard as fuck. I have been trying recently, and failing. I have been smoking for 7 years, since my junior year of highschool and straight through college.

I don't even get it, they make me feel like shit, yet still I am compelled to smoke them. I work out regularly and know that the only thing holding me back from being faster, better and stronger is the fact that I still smoke. Drives me nuts.

At least I cannot afford cigarettes now, and it is much easier to not smoke when you don't have anything to smoke.

I think I'm going to join you starting Monday. I've convinced myself it's OK to buy an iPhone if (and only if) I'm able to not smoke for at least one month.

It's going to be so hard not to smoke when I go out drinking though, ugh. This is going to suck. I wonder if I should go with the patch or the gum?

The gum is gross, I would go with the patch.

Not smoking while drinking is definitely hard, but right after meals is when I have the hardest time.

When my mom quit smoking, she kept a pen with her cigarettes and tallied how many she smoked a day. Each day she tried to smoke one less until she was only having one a day and it was easier to stop.

I would try this if you have really hard time quitting smoking.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Snus.jpg

It has helped me quit like three times and is the reason Sweden has I think the fewest male smokers percentage wise, unfortunately it is fiendishly addictive and I have tried to quit it several times in fact last time I had to start smoking to quit but then that backfired so I started snusing again.

Edit: I forgot to add that I think you can buy this in the states, but otherwise you can order it online and it's cheaper than cigarettes. Should only be used as a delicious last resort.

Quitting smoking while drinking alcohol definitely sucks; I gave up alcohol three years ago or this would be much harder.

Especially when you consider alcohol may increase smoking urges (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/22865.php), maybe you should look at skipping the drinks when you begin to quit smoking? I know it's a hard time of year for it, but we stink like ashtrays from smoking!

Man, I want to quit this shit.

I don't really mind the smell. I mean, it isn't nice but I don't really care. I just want to stop feeling like shit, and to be able to run more than a couple of hundred yards before I feel like I am going to die on the spot.

As for dipping, it makes me sick, and I would really rather not replace one addiction with another.

Dipping is chewing tobacco right? Snus is like a pouch of tobacco that you put under your upper lip and then the nicotine is absorbed by the skin there. You don't really chew anything it's like having a small teabag under your lip which provides you with nicotine for a while, it's like a having a nicotine IV.

They are basically the same, just one has the pouch and one is just loose tobacco. My friend does it all the time, one time I got him a big ass roll of the pouches for free and he used to stuff like four of them under his lip at a time. It isn't chewing tobacco, in fact I have never seen either chewing tobacky or snuff in real life.

The more I think of it the more I consider it, as even though it isn't really better it at least won't fuck with my lung capacity.

I will do the pouches though, as the loose stuff gets everywhere.

Yeah and also it's not particularly wet so once your mouth gets used to it and stops producing extra saliva you shouldn't have any drip which is pretty nice. I was on a testing panel for a type of snus for America and other foreign markets. They toned down the tobacco flavour a lot and were going with different added flavours like berries and mint and so on. The tastes weren't bad so that might be worth looking into. It doesn't affect the lungs as far as I know and a lot Swedish footballers and almost all hockey players do it. Join us...

That's true. Although the full extent of the danger isn't known yet. There are possible links to diabetes and cancer and so on but so far there is actually very little actual evidence of anything. I'm sure there will be but the Swedish government has researched it a lot for decades so it is at least safe to say that it is a great deal healthier than smoking and it might be easier to quit smoking with them (and their handsfree nature makes them more convenient for gaming ;)). If you can quit without them then I would do that.

Well, since we all know that personal experience carry the most reliable facts on Earth, I will point out that my uncle Al used to rock the chewing tobacco under his upper lip, until it had to be removed.

Interesting epilogue to that story; first night we had him over after the surgery, my mom made corn on the cob. Psychic scars, homes.

That is pretty gruesome but snus isn't like American tobacco as it is cured with steam rather than fire it contains one 50th the amount of carcinogens, so while it isn't safe, no nicotine is, it is safer. You can read about the health issues on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus#Medical_community_discussions_and_reports). Swedish snus and American dipping tobacco are different.

Sorry for the double post just realised I really come across as pushing this stuff, but I was only trying to clear up some confusion. Just wanted to say that I don't think you should do snus unless you try to quit smoking but can't as snus is very addictive, more so then cigarettes in my experience. Everyone I know who started snusing is still doing it today. Just wanted to clear that up as I don't want my reputation as a spokesman for the Snus Industry compromised.
