I just got my first iOS device from a friend real cheap, and I'm looking for some games and apps to load it up with. Here are my (fairly restrictive) guidelines:

It's a second generation iPod Touch, the equivalent of an iPhone 3G. That means it's not very powerful, and would never run something like Infinity Blade.
My phone is a Nexus One, which is a good deal more powerful, and it's on me all the time versus this iPod which will mainly live at home. So, nothing that I can find on Android, unless the iOS version is significantly better.
I really don't enjoy super-casual games, like Angry Birds and the like. I'd much rather get a great $10 game than 10 5-minutes-of-fun $1 games.

So, what are some things I should try? Any must-haves?

If you want recommendations for asynchronous online multiplayer, I like:
Carcassone
Tigris and Euphrates
Ra

which are all implementations of german board games. Puerto Rico has an iPad version.

CubedRallyRacer and The Incident are fun iOS originals and shouldn't tax your iPod.
I played through Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger again.

Thanks. Anyone tried Vay? How is the writing, versus the Working Designs version?

Have you played Hoggy? Hoggy is awesome, and free, and awesome.

Just a casual warning. I have the same device and many newer games aren't compatible (even some that don't say so on their iTunes page). A couple that jump to mind are Puzzle Quest 2 and Scribblenauts. Also, other newer games like Brothers: Sword and Sorcery crash all the time. Basically you're better off sticking to older games or at least making sure to test out a free version.

The above has pretty much soured me on iOS gaming. I even had the pleasure of having an app I own receive an update to make it no longer compatible with my device. I still have the older version installed but if I ever lose that for some reason then the app is basically gone until I buy a new device.

Just downloaded Hoggy, and I'll give it a try. I bought Poker Smash and Super Monkey Ball 2, as well.

Hope you like it as much as I did. One word of advice because lots of people get stuck on a certain level and it's totally counter intuitive: if you drop onto ice in the game the MORE momentum you have the SLOWER you will go, and vice versa.

Just gave it a try. I love both Super Mario Bros. 2 and Metal Storm, so this is RIGHT up my alley.

Lockdown isn't very good even though its running on the infinity blade engine. Very short and the looping environment is quite boring.

Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer. It's a deck-building game that's like a mix of Magic: The Gathering and Dominion. It's very good, it has multiplayer support, and the dev just released an expansion set for it which really mixes things up.
