there are multiple variations of this clip, this was the best one I could find...

simulation of the end of the earth

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z6G9EJRJAkw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z6G9EJRJAkw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

EDIT: better, annotated version found here (http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1828851) (odd that its at collegehumor...)

I'd recommend watching it all the way through, is what it says at the ending true? If so, wow.

They're hitting the Earth with a rock the size of our moon, of course in that case we're fucked.

Sucks for those on the Space Station. Enjoy your slow deaths and the horrible realization that you just saw your entire race fade from the universe.

Sounds like a great excuse to get down and dirty if you ask me. Gotta repopulate, know what I mean? Well, that's what we'll tell them, anyway.

What are the odds of something like that happening? I mean, wouldn't we see it coming? All we would have to do is call Bruce Willis.

Honestly? We have astronomers debating over whether or not there is a star orbiting our sun. So don't assume we will see something coming.

High speed impacts often generate a good deal of heat due to friction and exchange of force. With an impact of this magnitude the heat generated would be massive. The fireball engulfing the Earth would most likely be the atmosphere igniting.

I saw it in an astronomy mag first, then on The Universe show. All I can find is the Wiki article atm. Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemesis_(star)).

I was wondering the same thing. By the way ClannerDelta, if that was God lighting his farts on fire, I hope he realizes that in the video he just spackled the world. Obviously, we see how that ends up. Not good.

The 2nd version has some text that shows up at the end, and it says

"Evidence shows that this has happened at least 6 times in Earth's history"

There's an asteroid that may or may not hit us come 2036. Wiki entry here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis), but using Google you can easily hunt other articles.

That is, it might hit us if we survive 2012. And not the (potentially) terrible film of the same name.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't love me some ID4. It's mostly in the same way I love Armageddon and most everything else Michael Bay puts out. Garbage, but generally pretty garbage.

I'm just mostly afraid that people will take the trailer for that flick as gospel.

my understanding is, well sort of. i'm sure 5 of the 6 they are probably talking about were not of that magnitude... the thing in the video looked to be 1/4 the size of earth....

oh, and something that large, flinging fireball waves at ultra-fast speeds... there would be no greek monuments standing, there would be nothing man made left, except mayb Dr. Jones hiding in a fridge.

And the events happen in real time.

They used a special lens to shoot a beam of light along the curvature of the Earth, allowing them to see the future.

Saw that on another documentary. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338337/)

It's a good thing that asteroid has an estimated best chance to doom us all of 1 in 45,000. :o

"Evidence shows that this has happened at least 6 times in Earth's history"

Actually the quote at the end says "Evidence shows that this has happened at leasts 6 times in Earth's history."

Which means the annotation was most likely done by a 13 year old, or at best by a drunk 20 year old who didn't even bother to have somebody proofread his stuff before he posted it.

So maybe it has happened 6 times, but don't take the CollegeHumor video's word for it. ;)

It's also a good thing my OCD makes 1 in 45,000 seem much closer to 1 in 2 :). I'm much more the obsessive side of OCD (though my medicine helps curb it some) but if it's a doom and gloom scenario, I'm screwed. I'll lose sleep until the world doesn't fizzle out in 2012 and then find something else to freak out over.

While playing game, mind you. Need to get in as much as possible until the inevitable pop.

See, when I first heard the 2012 prophecies of doom. I immediately thought about all the games I'd want to play/see sequels if the world ended.

That's essentially the point in my life where I can specifically point to and say "Yep, that's when I knew I had a problem." :D

When my OCD got really really bad (it was trigger by my dad passing away five years ago and just sort of...grew unchecked), it got to the point where I was freaking out about everything bad and doctors, family, etc., thought I may eventually become suicidal.

I kept explaining to them that Revenge of the Sith wasn't going to be out for a while yet and until I see Obi Wan fight Anakin on a giant screen, I wasn't going anywhere.

So yeah, I sympathize :) My priorities are completely out of whack.

There's so many things that could wipe out the human race, this is just one in the basket. I'm more worried about super volcanoes really. While one eruption won't kill everyone, the mass starvation is going to suck!
