View Full Version : WoW question: Death knight and Rogue build?

I took a few month break from WoW only to come back to my rogue's talent tree all reset and me not remembering what they were (it was a friend's build advice). Seems like they added some more stuff to each class's talent tree. Before I left, I was a shadow stepping rogue and was loving it. Now some one said I should try the combat tree with whats that last one? Massive killing or something. Just doesn't seem the same anymore after playing as a shadow stepping rogue. What do you guys think would be an ideal talent tree for leveling and pvping while leveling to 80?
As for the death knight. I seem to get the impression that Blood = combat, Ice = defense, Something green = magic casting.
Whats the best talent tree for death knight to level up with to 80?
Thanks in advance.

Never mind. I figured out the rogue one. Still not too sure about the Death knight one.

Well, the way DK's are is each tree can do sufficent DPS to do a DPS tree, and with the right gear, each tree should be able to tank 5mans atleast, and heroics.
The main thing about each tree though. Frost is going to be your primary tank tree with the defense talents, also each tree has a 1st tier tank talent of some sort to pickup.
Blood is a DPS tree, melee/single DPS though.
Unholy is a DPS tree that focuses more on AOE damage with a perm pet Ghoul if you spec for which, which you should.
My DK currently is 63, and i'm 54 points in unholy, the rest is going to blood from here. I'm at work so I can't link it, but if you armory Nesithan on Quel'Dorei you can see how he's spec'd currently. Assuming armory is updated. I adore unholy, Once dual spec's get imped in 3.1, I'll probably have an offspec frost.

So far I'm frost with enough points in blood to get rune tap so I can heal myself. I can easily tank any mob (even elites like the ones in the Nagrand quest chain) and can AOE very easily if a pull goes bad. To me frost is more about burst damage then any of the other classes while blood and unholy seem to be sustained DPS.
So far I love this class and don't see myself playing my hunter as much.

From what little I've played it seems like...
Blood=Single target DPS, good for solo leveling
Frost=survivability , probably the tree any raiding, tank DK will spec into
Unholy=AoE DPS with slightly more focus on the disease mechanic
The thing with DKs is that, more so that any of the other tank classes, really any tree can be a viable tank and DPS for anything you'll need to do pre-midway through in the new raid content. Play the tree that look the most fun to you.

My DK is officially in northrend now, about 3 bubbles from 70 and enjoying the quest content out there. Dalaran is freaking cool too.

I have absolutely no idea what I am doing on my DK. I did just make him last night, and just got through the starting quests, but still. All I do now is use the abilities when they are not on cooldown, and I have the rune(s). It's working decently enough so far, but I am not sure how long that will continue. I am specced Unholy ATM, but from reading this, maybe I should go Blood.

It's ok. You're a Death Knight. It's the new win class. You can't do anything wrong. Just slam those abilities as soon as they appear.

A ret pally is my main, so I am covered on all fronts :p
I feel like I deserve the ret pally changes, though. He was my first character, and I have been ret since WoW launched, so I had lots of suffering.

I have my DK up to 71 now and believe I can answer this question quite confidently from experience and from what I've heard from guildies.
I am leveling unholy. This was how I was specced when I got out of the starting area. (http://www.wowdb.com/talent.aspx?id=6#::ef54e2fef2e3fe3f2efe3fefe2fe2af :) Unholy is a great soloing build, as you get a permanent ghoul pet and tons of AoE abilities. It's single target dps isn't bad either. The best part about it is that most of your damage comes from spell damage, so armor mitigation is hardly a factor.
Frost is often called the tanking spec, when really it's only slightly better than the others for it. It is far better at single target burst damage. It has a mix of spell and physical damage. It also has all the best DW talents, but I suggest you avoid DW, especially if you are tanking.
Blood is almost all physical damage, and is great single target dps. It also has tons of self healing abilities, so downtime is the lowest of the three specs. Downtime hasn't been much of a factor for me so far, though, as deathstrike is more than enough to heal me up.
Make sure you burn up all your RP abilities as soon as you hit 100 or just before. RP abilites usually do more damage, and using a rune ability at 100 results in a loss of future RP gains after waiting for the 10 second cooldown on runes. Death coil a lot.

I've gone blood as a DK and so far the only thing to kill me in Hellfire was a fel reaver
it should be noted that the DK taunt doesnt work on fel reavers(my plan was to pull it into the alliance patrols.)
with blood, you just don't stop, if your low on health(which only happens if you take on 4-5 higher level mobs) you can just pick a target that's by himself and just use your self healing abilities and your off.

My DK is only 59 but I can tell you with a full blood spec I was tearing through other DKs like nothing. Not sure how that stacks up at 80 but blood is fun for single Target DPS. I'm going to give unholy a shot soon.
I've been mainly focusing on my shaman who just hit 76. He's elemental spec, Since I got Lava Burst my DPS has significantly increased.
