View Full Version : Kanye West voice of this Generation
Young Al Capone

Kanye West has taken it upon himself to declare himself the voice of this generation.
"I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan."

I say fuck that, you don't speak for my generation Kanye, and you suck. I didn't absolutely hate you before, though I wasn't anything near what you may consider a fan.
Now; you can go straight to hell, fucking narcissist.

Kanye rules, though he was better as a producer.
He isn't the worst MC who gets radioplay. He has pretty good flow but his rhymes are garbage; he often rhymes words with themselves amongst other offenses. Like mispronouncing to make a rhyme...
His head is way too big for my tastes though. I know that it is a product of the scene, but this is a particularly bad case. He makes LL Cool J (Ladies Love Cool James) look humble.

He's a great producer. He's a wonderful producer. He's got certain lines where it's like, "OOOOOOOOOOOH KANYE SAID THAT! That was amazing!"
And then I hear him talk about how relevant he is. And how relevant he tries to be. And he talks about how great Jay-Z is, and...that...that's just...he tries to have it two ways and be heartfelt and flashy, but one just sounds fake when you have too much of the other.
Then again, our generation might just be dicks. Who knows!

He's the guy that did that god awful version of the daft punk song. That is I think the only way I know of him and that was because I heard the song come on at a night club I became pretty excited and then surprised when somebody had spilled rap all over the song. He is welcome to speak for my generation I don't want anything to do with 90% of it.

I've hated Kanye ever since his little signing deal hit the news a few years nacl. I don't remember the story, but a few rap labels had some sort of bidding war over the guy when he first hit the scene. The first thing I heard out of him was bragging about his new record deals and how he was going to be the hottest rapper ever. He hasn't done much to change my opinion of him in the years following. He's either talking about Bush, bitching about not being recognized for his genius, or he's bragging about himself.
Also, how the fuck can you be so confident in your musical genius when every song you've put out is a remix of an already successful song? I don't have a problem with rappers using samples, but Kanye seems to rip songs off completely. The Daft Punk song, Ray Charles, the song posted earlier, etc. Throw a base line over it and he's suddenly a prodigy.

Remember, these are Kanye's rules...he gets to make them because of how great he is. :rollseyessohardtheyfallthefuckout:
Besides being the "George Bush hates black people" guy, is he really known for anything? I mean, I've heard that he's a musician and all... but does he sell music to tweens or something? Maybe I'm out of his demo, or something; but this guy gets way too much time on the idiot box than he should.
I only respond to this because, according to the Internets, this asshat is two years older than me... so I guess the generation that he's talking about could also be my generation and I take these narcissistic claims to heart.
I've yet to see anyone in the public's eye that speaks for me and my generation. So thank you very much, but go do something relevant with your life and then we can talk about you and your voice.

He's a good producer. In my opinion, at least. A really really good producer. His music sounds GOOD. There are songs of his where I can literally HATE what is said, but it just...it just sounds so good.
He's wealthy and loud. That's where his idiot-box time comes from, though. Plenty of great producers just produce. T

Every song? Hyperbole much?
To be fair, that is Kanye's style. He uses samples and does things to them to create new songs (chopping them up, speeding them up, slowing them down, distortions, etc). And it's not really ripping off songs when he gets clearance or even the artist's blessing (Daft Punk really liked "Stronger"). His knowledge of music is encyclopedic (especially soul/r&b), so he uses that knowledge to create new music.
I will say, though, that I am extremely biased. I think he's a great rapper and an AMAZING producer. I also doubt he's actually this full of himself, but this is what keeps him in the news when he's working on getting new music out there (his new album drops later this month, I think).

Its funny because its sad.
I don't know if he's putting on the absurdly arrogant thing, Pomeroy. I mean, he talks about it a lot. The song 'Big Brother' off Graduation was just...about how great he was, but how Jay-Z is better. And he just seems so sincere when he says all of these things; I'm not sure he could fake it.

He should be calling himself the Puff Daddy of this generation. He is a rip-off artist and has shit rhymes.
Like I said earlier, he may have flow, but if you just listen to what he is saying it is not clever, often mispronounced to force a rhyme, or sometimes is just the same word rhymed with itself multiple times.
His producing is hardly more notable than Puff Daddy's, just in that he doesn't steal absolutely every beat he uses. I guess that is hyperbole, cause I admit that his music often does sound good, but there is no substance what-so-ever.
It is weird for me to say that too, as I often appreciate the style over substance approach.

Ultimately, he can do what he wants as I don't buy his albums. But I'd like to see how history classifies him in 30 years. I'm close friends with Danger Mouse and I know that a producer's lifespan can be a short one. Especially if you act like a douche, joke or not.

I owe it all to a good friend. When I was in Atlanta, we made films together and music videos for Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) when he was calling himself Pelican City and producing ambient music. My friend and Burton were good friends from UGA and when Brian moved to London for a residency, then put together The Gray Album, he just took off like a rocket.

As for the sanctity of the VMA's? Well, common courtesy would dictate that you show some class in any kind of public arena. It wouldn't be acceptable even at a highschool/middleschool level. How one reacts to loss is a good indicator of the person's personality.
Common courtesy? Are we talking about the same VMA's?
I have many reasons to dislike Kanye.
And here they are. (http://www.mamapop.com/mamapop/2008/11/the-top-ten-rea.html)
Wow. That list sure convinces me. The fact that there's ten whole Facebook groups that think Kanye West is a douche totally makes it true! Seriously, if I used Facebook as a resource, I'd think Obama was not only a socialist but that he was a terrorist is well.
Seriously guys, it's all just an opinion. You think he's a douche. I. Get. It.

Seriously dude, it's all just an opinion. You think he's awesome. I. Get. It.
It works both ways. If someone acts like a douche, they are a douche. I don't care if they are "Ironically" douchey.

Agreed! A little lame you couldn't come up with your own statement, but agreed, nonetheless.

In your opinion.
Yes. So, your point has been?
*edit* I suppose I should be more specific.
It's an internet forum, you'd be hard pressed to find much of anything that isn't entirely opinion. So when someone falls back on the "But that's just your opinion!!" stance it serves no purpose. If you're to the point where you need to rely on this kind of response, it's probably best to just leave the thread. It's upset you enough to force a response, but with nothing to say.

You honestly think I'm upset at this point? I'm upset you think Kanye West is a douche?
Come on, now. You do realize that I wasn't even talking to you in this thread when you decided to jump in and tell me that I'm naive and that I must be "lieing" to myself, right? I wasn't upset then, and I'm not upset now, but it seems a bit presumptious of you to just label me with emotions I must be having if I'm posting on a forum.
If my responses come off as me being upset...that wasn't their intention. The "in your opinion" I posted was mostly to push your buttons (which we've both been doing for the past few posts anyway).

I'll refer to the next portion of your response.

The thing is, I wasn't pushing buttons. The idea that you think I was clearly means you took something to heart if there were buttons to push. It's a forum, private messages are for 1 to 1 chatting, otherwise your responses are going to be directed everywhere. Like shouting in a crowded room.
The only thing I particularly care about is your obsession with him being "serious". What is the difference, in your opinion, between someone who "acts" like an asshole and is an asshole. I find it to be a lame excuse that you've been clinging too (Hence the lieing to yourself portion of my response). Is there a reason, specifically, you think he's "acting" this way as opposed to sincere in his douchery?

I've always found Kanye to be a bit of an idiot...this just reinforces that belief.
His crowning moment though was the <ebonics>George Bush hate black people</ebonics>
His music isn't that great...he has a HUGE ego...he's put his foot in his mouth numerous times. Glad he's not the voice of MY generation.

Fair enough. I was pushing buttons, because it's amusing to me.

Thanks for the lesson!

It's not an obsession, it's an opinion. I "think" (and am pretty sure) that he's not being serious. It's a public persona that he uses to generate press which keeps him in the public eye. I think he's acting because his "assholery" affects literally no one. I think this because he's an entertainer.
I don't take what he does seriously (as I've stated repeatedly). It amuses me to no end that he just doesn't give a shit about what he's "supposed" to do at an award show, or whatever. If he was actually being hurtful, I could see your point.

Oh holy crap, is Kanye responsible for all that robot-voice club music I hear bumping out of cars in my neighborhood? Because that shit is TERRIBLE and it seems to be everywhere.
I fucking hate that robot-voice shit. It's so fucking crap.

I disagree on this point. I'll concede the former, as I have no idea what he's thinking. I don't have a large enough ego to have that kind of perspective. So I'll agree to disagree.
The quoted part bothers me though. He, as an entertainer for better or worse, has an impact on people. In a perfect world he would be relegated to entertainment value only, but somewhere along the way a large portion of the population decided Musicians, Actors, and millionaire sluts were role-models. His egotistical and rude actions impact a lot of people. So, it's not a harmless situation. We all deal with douchebags every day. I can't help but feel most of them wouldn't be around if there wasn't such a tolerant policy for them in the spotlight.

Wow, you're right! 1 item in a list cancels out the other nine! Thank you for showing me that any list that mentions facebook defuncts the rest of it! Thank you so much!

But that's not my problem, and it's not really yours. I'm pretty sure neither of us has decided Kanye's a role model. How other people react to something isn't in our control, and it's a poor excuse to say that because someone does something it makes it OK.

I was pointing out how inane that list was. Other reasons it's inane: pointing out someone's blog posts as a reason they're douchey (if that's the new standard, let's get the writers of pretty much every personal blog ever and write top ten lists about them too!), and completely dismissing the idea that race might be a factor in decision making.
The quotes are exactly what we've been discussing, so they're sort of redundant to add to the conversation.

Oh man, that's hilarious. I didn't really find it to be too bad...until he yelled "I paid for this film!" and ran away. Then he almost runs a guy over while escaping in the van...classic. :D
