Remember Tropico? It was a construction and management sim set on a bucolic tropical land. I had sort of forgotten about it, until I got a message this morning.

Kalypso Media has acquired the rights to Tropico 3 from Take-Two Interactive. They've already tasked Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games with development of the PC title.

Fuck yes! I love Tropico and have been hoping for a proper sequel for years!

First I was like :D but then .

I picked up Tropic: Mucho Macho edition (first game + expansion combo) a few years ago on a whim, and I was really surprised by it. It clicked with me on the same level that SimCity and SimIsle did. I know PopTop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PopTop_Software) (not to be confused with PopCap) got acquired by Firaxis, which was then acquired by TakeTwo, so I was crossing my fingers that they'd let the Firaxis guys loose to make another Tropico sequel (there was a Tropico 2 - it had pirates).

So I'm glad that the license is actually getting some attention... but I've never heard of this publisher or the developer. But that doesn't necessarily mean they won't do the title justice, I was just kinda hoping for Firaxis.

From what I've read, the PopTop team was really pretty small, and did the original Tropico on a relatively low budget. Postmortem: Poptop Software's Tropico (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3031/postmortem_poptop_softwares_.php) (Gamasutra).

There was a Tropico 2?Tropico 2: Pirate's Cove (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropico_2). It had a different developer and publisher than the first game.

Tropico 2 wasn't a bad game, but I'd love to see a sequel that returned to the setting of the original. The politics of the game were legitimately interesting, and the setting made the choices feel very immediate. (How do you maintain an army while keeping people from starving? How do you build a tourist trade but keep them out of the inevitable bad parts of town? Do you suck up to a global power, or try to play them off each other?) The pirate theme of Tropico 2 was more jaunty, but it also made it easy to gloss over the idea that you had a captive work force and needed to intimidate them into subservience...

I really enjoyed Tropico: Mucho Macho Edition (the first plus expansion packs, as mentioned above). I played a LOT of that game, and I'd love to see a good sequel.

I'm especially excited that this has already been confirmed as a PC release. It doesn't need to be flashy either, just some new features and an updated interface would be nice.

Please be as good. I really enjoyed the first game.

I was playing Pirates Cove just last month. And I too have the Moo-eh? Macho edition - game also had some of the best themed music ever.

I hope the new game has a similar soundtrack, and keeps the advisor commentary.

"You are making quite a lot of enemies, El Presidente."

"The people, they suffer for lack of medical treatment!"

"Your people may be calling for an election next year."

"I'm glad to see you're putting something away for yourself in Switzerland."
