Yes kids, it's that time again! It's the Help Me Find a Good ______ Laptop for $_____! :D
Not for me, but a buddy of mine is looking for a decent travel companion for the discriminating WoW crack addict. I already suggested a Macbook to him (at the behest of some of the folks I talked to while we were at PAX) but he balked at the budget range. He's hoping for something around the $1k mark. Whaddya think? :o

Which lends none of the personal experience of fellow CoGger's with models or manufacturers they favour or avoid. :o I trust you guys more than random blind "reviews" on most sites, which can sometimes stink to high heaven of either shills or griefers from competitors. :p
Especially when the context is gaming, and half those reviews are "Great for email!" or "zomg, sucks! Couldn't connect to my neighbor's wireless!" ;)

Tell him to get an Asus that matches his price range and size requirements. He won't regret it. I use a g73 and it's a monster and not for everyone obviously, but I love it. The smaller varieties are similarly viewed as excellent and you will be hard pressed to find a better price to performance ratio. Also, a handy reference, Laptop Reliability (http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf).
The Alienware m14x is a nice laptop as well in spite of the brand's history. I've played around on a friends and it was a good compromise to size/gaming ability. I prefer the larger screens for gaming though. It's also about $99 out of his price range.
If he doesn't mind buying refurb. Look here. (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1104483&SRCCODE=WEBGOOPA&cm_mmc_o=mH4CjC7BBTkwCjCV1-CjCE)

ASUS from what I am hearing is the way to go. Newegg has good deals, but check Slickdeals as well. They did have a good deal on them recently.

I don't know how their laptops are, but these guys did good with my new PC: http://www.ibuypower.com/
They seem to have several laptops on sale in the $1000 range.

Another site you might check is XoticPC (http://www.xoticpc.com). I got my gaming laptop there a couple years ago, and have been very happy with it and the buying process.
