View Full Version : WoW: Level 80 already?

World of Warcraft has its first official level 80 on live servers: Nymh, a warlock on the European French-language server Drek'thar.

The anonymous player achieved the feat 27 hours after the European servers for the new expansion Wrath of the Lich King went online, according to an interview on MMO Champion.

The mystery levelling maestro is 21 years old and used to lead a raiding guild.

Nymh spent those 27 hours incessantly grinding monsters in a single crypt in the Grizzly Hills area, where the respawn rate is fast and the monsters are neutral, thus reducing danger and downtime. Nymh was kept alive by a healer throughout the process (but not in the same party, so Nymh kept all the XP).

Sounds fun.

Apparently Nymh beat a paladin called Darus to level 80. Darus was suspended by Blizzard at level 79 and eventually bumped back to level 70 after being found to be using an exploit.

27 hours in a cave? Sounds like a hoot O.o

Wow, talk about taking all the fun out of a game :S

Glad i'm out of the addiction called "World of Warcraft"

The fun is in getting your name out there. Some people like to be the first to do something so it's worth the 27 hours of shit in a cave!

After leaving WoW a week or so back I figured I'd be freaking out and going through some serious withdraw especially in the days following the expansion. But after hearing my friends talk about it and reading a bit here and there, I don't really care all that much. I think it would be neat to see the new zones and explore (favorite part), but the idea of doing the same thing all over again with new skins just seems so drastically unappealing to me.

So like Nura, I'm glad I'm out.

Who would do that to themselves?

Hey, the player is a chick. Maybe they're just really hot, and bored.

Probably not, but maybe. They're french afterall.

Also how I feel. There are so many games out right now on my PC and DS, why would I subject myself to the same bullshit that is WoW for another ten levels? Sure, I'd like to try a Death Knight, but ultimately, it's just the same treadmill.

As for this person: Get a life. Sounds pretty fucking boring spending twenty-seven hours in a cave grinding mobs and not even seeing any of the new zones or doing any of the new quests. I'm sure now they're planning to begin setting up raiding parties to do the gear grind all over again. Wooo.

If this person didn't do it, someone else would have. In the world of WOW, this is probably worth some fame...in real life...not so much...

If I recall correctly, the first 70 after TBC was also French. I think they had a single guy tapping mobs and then an entire raid backing him up to actually kill it.

My roommate got his copy installed and patched around midnight PST last night. At that point the highest level Horde on Mal'ganis was "only" 74. I haven't been downstairs to see if he pulled an all-nighter, but I'm willing to bet someone is at least 78.

I enjoyed some of the raiding I did when I still played WOW to me though the most fun I had in the game was the leveling and seeing and doing new things. So grinding to hit 80 as fast as possible does not appeal to me at all.

My MMO love has slowly faded over time. I can't even bring myself to log onto Warhammer right now despite the fact that I was having so much fun with it. It's still grind and there are just way too many amazing gaming experiences to be had this fall outside of MMOs. A lot of my friends are psyched for Lich King so the temptation is there to jump back in again but I find myself, for the first time, not really caring that I'm missing out.

If it keeps them from reproducing, all the better for the rest of us. Keep gaming you addicts!

It's sort of sad, but it's not my life, so whatever. I can't even play MMOs because I fear I might become addicted--never have touched one outside of a bit of Ultima Online back in the day. But grinding in any game is not my idea of fun, so I might not become as entrenched after all.

I play WoW for a couple months a year, usually when a new expansion pack or new mega-patch releases. I like to check out new content but don't feel the desire to grind gear, rep, etc. anymore.

You've just described my thoughts completely.

I don't play WoW or any MMO anymore but to you guys saying this guy is sad/needs to get out more really don't get it. Even if that's true, this isn't what makes it so.

How many of you have played Geometry Wars? What's your high score? Have you ever played just to beat that high score? It doesn't matter that you say you were having fun doing it, or that you say what he did can't have been as much fun as what you did. It's the same thing and it's hypocritical for you to judge this guy as a loser for having fun chasing different goals than you.

Edit: I realize I come off pretty preachy, that's really not my intention. Just trying to show the other side of the argument.

Yup, I was, until very recently, a hardcore MMO player, but with it being such a great time to be a gamer I really cannot be arsed with the grind in MMO's any more.

I've been playing for the past 2 days. I wasn't planning to, but my friend got sent a free copy so he could review it, but he has zero interest in it and gave it to me.
Seems pretty good so far. I haven't come across any tedious quests yet, and I'm loving the new Fire spec for Mages. I just hit level 71 after running an instance twice and gaining 6 bars in the process.
The highest on my server at the moment is 77, which a Hunter and a Shammy are tied at.

I like WoW, although I plan on taking a break until the WotLK madness has died down a little.

However, I understand why people get burned out, and why it feels like a grind - with no skill involved, there is no real feeling of accomplishment. When I hit a level in WoW, it required very little from me. Yes, you can get knowledge of how to do something a little better, but essentially, WoW is a game where the person with the most time to "invest" wins.

And that isn't a very rewarding system. Can you imagine how popular an MMO would be if it were to somehow take something addicting like Counter Strike, CoD4, or Battlefield gameplay, and add MMO elements like customization, extra skillsets, etc to the game? In a game like CoD4, every time I play a map, it's exactly the same map, but the game plays out a little differently - sometimes I kick the shit out of people, sometime I get dominated. It all depends on how I'm playing and how the people with me are playing. That kind of dynamic environment, IMO, doesn't exist in WoW.

This is why I'm very excited for APB, or any similar game that comes out.

Wow. Just fucking wow. No pun intended, honestly. It does fit quite well though.

I agree. I think Planetside had the right idea. It required a good amount of skill to do well. It just needed better execution and balance.
If Blizzard's next MMO project is something like that, it would make me extremely happy.
