So..... for some reason, I got started looking at the Lego page on Wikipedia, and then made my way over to this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Space) It brought back such memories! We were never able to afford the really big sets, but I did have this (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6889) and this (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6956) and I'm pretty sure I had this. (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6897)

I tracked some of it down on eBay, I could actually buy it. It was so cool! I loved that stuff. Nothing quite like sci fi Lego. I also had a few Micro Machines, and FormChangers, which were cheap Transformers rip offs.

What toys did you guys grow up with?

The He-Man figures which my father built a 3 m2 fort for, sometimes having a father who works with special effects for films was pretty cool. I loved the Star wars figures with the huge Millennium Falcon. But the best when I was a kid was probably Warhammer, even though I stopped when I was like 14 or so I think it is such a good thing for kids. The rulebooks, the strategy, the painting, sexual favours you had to trade to afford any of it etc.

Man, I loved Legos, used to build with both my mom and dad back when I was a little one. Also loved Transformers. Hell, I loved my Intellivision too. Used to play cards on it with my dad, (They had a few card game cartridges) or Discs of Tron.

The legos were always the most awesome. Those, and my Star Wars toys.

I never had any Star Wars toys. I dont know why. Maybe they werent popular in South Africa when I was growing up? Incidentally, I dont think I saw my first Star Wars movie till I was 12 or something. Lego was generally the best.

I also had some Capsela, which was also a construction toy, but more scientific. You could build working vehicles etc. Lots of fun.

My favorite childhood toy? Gotta go with the farm tractor inner tube. Was the poor kids trampoline and could be used for so many other things.

In the summer we would get 2-3 of them into the truck, then have the parents drive us 5-6 miles upstream of the canal that ran through town and we would get dropped off. The rest of the afternoon was spent floating on the tubes in the canal to get back into town. There were at least 8 or 9 waterfalls that were in the route that were a blast to float through, one of which that had such a nasty falls that the parents made us promise not to attempt to run it. Of course we always did, which looking back was pretty stupid but that was what it was like back then.

During the winter we would use them like sleds at a gravel pit near town that was shut down. That also wasn't the safest activity either. One winter we built a large jump made of snow at the bottom of the pit and loaded 6+ people onto a very large tube. When it hit the jump nobody was able to stay attached to the tube and flew in all directions, looked like someone had tossed a grenade in the middle of us with all the bodies flying everywhere. My stepsister ended up with a broken arm and the rest of us were pretty banged up.

I guess growing up in a backwater town of < 3000 in Idaho was different than what most experienced.

Forgot about those, I had most of the figures but my friend had all the figures and vehicles. The big globe thing on wheels where Krang (I think his name was) lived was pretty cool.

Also I tried playing with Lego but I was really hyperactive so I never had the patience but I started a lot of things that my parents finished.

My favorite toy from my youth has got to be the Voltron I got for my 4th birthday... the damn thing lasted until I was almost 10. It helped that I lived near Japan at the time and I got a really cool die-cast metal version.

Yeah, I remember one of my favourite toys as a toddler was my Mom's lettuce drying tub. Anything that spins round at high speed is awesome to kids. And pieces of cardboard + grassy slope = awesome.

I used to live on a farm, and we had a dam. We used to build all sorts of cool things with the mud/clay there, such as our own mini dams.

Legos and Transformers were the main ones. Also some micro machines and hot wheels.

I had a few "big" Lego sets, including the seaport (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6542), monorail (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6399), and pirate ship (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6285), and a bunch of small ones. Well, some of the small ones were in the lego bucket with all kinds of pieces mixed in. (I actually still have them. Haven't eBay'd/given them away yet.)

Was it the big metal Voltron that basically stood 2' tall? My brother had it, and it was fantastic. All metal, and the lions had a good number of movable joints. Basically looked like a 'REAL' Voltron, better than the one in the show.

Then again, my brother ended up with a ton of kick-ass imported toys, like the macross transforming jets... fully die-cast.

Jealous!

Star Wars, He-Man, Transformers, MASK.

Legos, Transformers, my big wheel ruled too. But TMNT was pretty much what I was most in to. My TMNT and my brother's Batman/Robin figures would have epic battles, and then team up to fight Shredder and Two-Face. Its funny, he was more into Batman back in the day than I was. Didnt start collecting Star Wars figures until 1997, with the re-release. I also liked playing in the mud, but who didnt. Except in Florida we mostly have...wet sand.

I was obsessed with Legos, I had a couple of gigantic cardboard boxes filled with them.

I really liked TMNT too and Crash Test Dummies too. I had a few vehicles for TMNT, I remember the van that fired pizzas. The most distinct thing though was definitely this cannon for Crash Test Dummies, it would launch them at like terminal velocity across the entire house. That thing was freaking dangerous, and then one day it vanished and I never saw it again. I looked for years and it never showed back up.

I also really remember riding a little red wagon down the hills by my house, they were steep hills and they weren't paved. I even remember rolling it on purpose. It must have hurt, but I distinctly remember it.

Anyone remember MoonBoots?

Pretty much the same toys I like now: robots, transforming or Japanese (preferably both). My local toy store carried the Takara Diakron/Diaclone toys that were the predecessors of the Transformers line, and I saved money from chores so that I could get them all.

These days, Transformers are still my cheap robot fix, but the ones I really love are Bandai's Soul of Chogokin line, and I'm looking at picking up some of Yamato's GN-U releases as well. Expensive and tough to import, but so, so sweet.

Oh, and the Green Machine was freaking awesome. One girl on my block had it, and never never never let the rest of us ride it. We had to stick with normal, boring Big Wheels.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only person on the planet who remembers the Mobile Armored Strike Kommand. Everyone I know my age thinks I'm making them up. I still have a (slightly broken) Switchblade (I had to look that up) - the bad ass plane which turns into a helicopter. It even had a button which would spin the helicopter's blades... though it was awfully hard to push it and have your hand out of the way so the blades would actually spin.

Also Capsela gets an A+ for nerdiness.

I had a huge bag with Lego under my bed. This was pieces from all kinds of sets that had been taken apart over the years. I also had some sets in the Pirtate series and different city sets. I always wanted a Lego train set, but never had the chance to get it. A few years ago I bought a big train set for my nephew and I almost had as much fun as he had :)

As a fan of He-Man I got a lot of figures and some sets like Snake Mountain (Skeletor's fortress). Thundercats was my favorite cartoon back in the day, but I only had a 1 or to figures unfortunately. I remember my best friends loved GI Joe, but I don't think I got into it that much. At the end of my childhood I got a ton of Ninja Turtles figures.

Am I the only one who thinks the quality (except for Lego) of toys had dropped significantly the last 10-15 years? I don't see much that can rival GI Joe, He-man, Transformers, Turtles or Thundercats figures these days. They look cheap and too flashy and "cool". I guess I'm just too old :( I do walk into toy stores every now and then to see what's new :)

I always wanted that. There was a store we went to sometimes, in a big city near my home. I always used to ogle it.

I actually used to have an HO gauge railway set. Well, the pieces for one. I never got round to building a permanent layout. Laziness and childhood attention span, that kind of thing. I eventually gave all of it away (not that I had that much, only one locomotive, a few carriages, and some track). Some day I'll build a proper layout, maybe in N gauge.

Well if it is any consolation, the thing broke after like the 5th time we used it :) My dad kept going back to Toys R Us and exchanging it for different slot car sets. Turbo Train had nothing on Rocket Tubes, man!

As for whether toys were better then...I'm a little conflicted. There was less reliance on cross-marketing and electronic gizmos, but I think a lot of the engineering and materials have really improved. Paint applications are much better and last longer, and the plastics are more durable by far.

As an example, compare these two designs:

Original Transformers Hound, circa 1984
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/transformers/images/e/ea/G1Hound_toy.jpg

Binaltech/Alternators Hound, circa 2004
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/transformers/images/6/67/Alternators_Hound_toy.jpg

Adjusting for general cost increases, they sold for within about $5 of the same price. The 2004 model is about three times bigger, much more accurate and detailed, and remarkably poseable. I'll grant you that the 1984 model has vintage appeal- what robot fans call 'funk'- but I really think that the 2004 toy is better in every respect.

[BTW, is there a way to constrain image sizes? I'll edit to slim these graphics down a touch.]

The pure joy I had from legos actually made me want to be an engineer, but the math and whatnot involved kind of turned me off.

Very fond memories of building elaborate shit (both from directions and just random) with my father. I use to build these awesome fucking airplanes, then throw them as hard as I could into my dresser, then rebuild them even cooler, then do it again.

I think I'd still enjoy dicking around with them if I had the time.

Yeah, sometimes the best fun to be had with Lego wasnt building what was on the box, but what was in your head. It was a huge bonus that, by its very nature, it was just about indestructible. You bash it to pieces, and build it again (cue the military starting a "L.E.G.O. Devices" division).

Oh my God! I was thinking about this game the whole thread. I had it, but got it second hand and didn't have the pieces or the instructions or any idea what it was. Did not stop me from messing around with it.

I had a big bat-cave set from the movie, and used to have long drawn-out fight scenes between Bruce Wayne, Robin Hood (from prince of Theives), and in some extreme cases a Transformer.

I mean kids, 2008 kids with rich parents and cell phones and 360s at home, sit for minutes to wait their turn to try and beat the high score in Pac Man. They'll play with mixed Legos for forever, but of course pool is still the number one game to play.

Loved me some Legos (Still DO!), Star Wars and Transformers when I was young.
I was lucky to have the very first Space lego set (1978, or 79?) and a bunch of those thereafter. I would always start by building it to the manual's specs, then ripping it apart and coming up with epic space stations, combining all my sets. I actually still have the very same legos, in a large plastic trash can. I am so glad I've resisted throwing them away. As I got older I got really into the Expert Builder sets (real gear mechanisms, rack and pinion steering, etc). And then recently my wife won the robotic Lego set with programmable controller in her office pool. Wooo! (she gave it to me and my inner 5 year old peed his pants).

I was extremely lucky to have most of the Star Wars playsets. I had the Death Star, Yoda's house, Hoth and Tatooine (re-colors of the same exact mold, with different backdrops), the M. Falcon, a Tie Fighter and X-Wing. My dad humored me by playing Star Wars with me. Damn, the Death Star was awesome, I loved the trash compactor with little eye-tentacle monster, and making the bridge drop out so Luke would have to swing Leia over the pit. Good times. Sadly, those toys did not survive my destructive phase when I discovered the explosive power of fireworks.

Yeah it was pretty cool, when I was I kid I would mostly play in different film studios or my dads studio with different sets, models and special effects pieces. It wasn't very safe but it was very fun. They would build 2d and sometimes 3d models of people and monsters in Styrofoam and then I would throw tools or shoot nail guns at them and so on. I would pretend to be on the different shows that they had sets for and stuff. One year for Halloween my dad turned this huge room into a scary banquette hall complete with film prop corpses on platters on the table and spider webs and blood all over the walls it freaked out a lot of my 10 year old friends.

12 years here.

I had this ratty plastic sabertooth tiger that I took with me Everywhere. By the time she got eaten by the dog when I was 12 or so, she was missing her tail, one tooth, and a leg and had gone from a kind of tawny reddish color to a washed out yellow. Oh man did I love her though, her name was Sabra.

Also had tons of legos and since I had the belief as a kid that my toys would come to life when I was gone, I always figured that they would have more fun without me, so I would build elaborate sets for them out of legos and toiletpaper tubes and stuff and then I'd leave them in there to play by themselves. I was an odd kid..
Oh man, and I had Beast Wars, anybody else have those? I had almost a full set.

Great to see Starcom toys upthread...I remember them well. The auto-transforming action on those toys was way ahead of its time.

When I was a teenager, I worked in toy stores over the summer and holiday seasons. Luckily, it was kind of a dry spell for toys I liked, so I didn't spend all my pay in the store. I do remember the Megaforce miniatures being really cool, though...I think I have a box of them somewhere in my closet.

Legos, The Real Ghostbusters, TMNT and G.I. Joe were the big ones for me. I kinda missed the good Transformers. Later on, I got really into the Star Wars figures that accompanied the re-release of the movies, and The Shadows of the Empire. Back when I was little, instead of a teddy bear, I had a life-sized Gizmo from Gremlins. I was also very attached to My Pet Monster (the full sized original, not the shitty minis), and a large Roger Rabbit. I still have most of this stuff in the closet, I keep Gizmo on a shelf though.

These days I still pick up a toy every now and then, but I don't know why. I don't play with them, and you can really only have so much of this shit sitting on your desk. Just last week I was in the Wal-mart toy aisle, thinking of picking up some re-released classic G.I. Joe figures.

Holy shit! I've been trying to remember the name of that movie for years! From 1st to 4th grade, I watched that movie daily. It was the only movie my grade school would play for kids who had to stay after school and I never got picked up early. Seriously, thanks for posting that.

This seems like a good place to ask, but I've had an impossible time figure out the name of my old favorite toy or, for that matter, anyone else that's even seen one before. It was Japanese, so that has alot to do with it. Basically, it was a mix of Power Rangers and Stretch Armstrong. It was basically a plastic head attached to a gummy, rubber body. It came with a full set of plastic armor that you could attach to different parts of the body. So basically, you'd get something resembling a power ranger, but it would stretch like Armstrong. It was friggin amazing!

Other than that, I collected G.I.Joes and Marvel figures by the boxes full. GI Joes made the best wrestling toys ever.

Probably one of my oldest toys, I remember having it when I was 4 or 5.

I got into Stretch Armstrong when they re-released him in the early 90's. I enjoyed the Vac-man and Vac-Pac toys better though. The Vac toys were a similar concept, but instead of being filled with goo, they were filled with small styrofoam beads. At the top of their heads was a little nozzle where you attached an included hand pump with which you'd pump out all of the air. Once the air was out, you could stretch them, like Stretch Armstrong, but they'd stay stretched out. To return them to normal you used a little release valve and let air back in.

YKGjif2Bj5A

I can't find anything on the Vac Pac, but they were awesome. Same concept as Vac Man, except they were smaller, good guys, and less generic. One didn't have legs, just a snake-like body with arms. Another had big ape arms, another had claws like The Maxx... etc.

He-man (with greyskull) was my #1 followed by Transformers (I had a ton of them). I had a 2 huge boxes filled with each.
I later added Micro Machines (gold MM 4tw), legos, and connex (I think that's what they were called).
My uncle bought my a HO model train set too when I was 10...and we played with that for years.
Of course once mom bought the sega genesis...it was all over.

Much later when they started releasing transformers and heman I bought the updated versions of he-man and for a time owned the collectors editions of optimus prime and megatron. I also owned the complete transformers series on DVD (some things should remain in the past).
But, a couple of tough years has forced me to get rid of most if not all of that.

This thread has brought back so many happy childhood memories. Remembered my faaaavorite toy (Next to my Teddybear dammit) was a Voltron 1. One of those ones with 20 something cars, vans and trucks that all snapped together to form Voltron. That thing was awesome. I think I still have it. Still have the bear too.

My other love was an At-At my dad got me when I was 4 or 5, I still have that thing somewhere. The picture of lil'squid made me remember how happy I was about that thing.

Nowadays my favorite toy is a Lightsaber. A masterworks one that lights up, makes noises. Everytime I fire it up, every damn time, I feel like I'm four years old again and just saw the Empire Strikes back.

I had the original GI Joe stuff. Foot lockers that were made of wood. GI Joe and pals with all the gear. Also Legos, Tinkertoys, erector sets, play-do...damn I had so much stuff I don't remember. Oh, I had a huge collection of Matchbox cars and the race tracks.

I made my own cutom Lego vehicles, which I treasure to this day. I'll try to take a picture of them to embarrass myself in front of everyone! One of my favorite things as a child was my kitchen play set I would take my mom's old pots and pans out in the yard and make mud pies and "soups" and things with plants and dirt found in the yard.

I used to make..... concoctions out of things I found in the garden, mixed into a glass coke bottle. Leaves, dirt, twigs, whatever, it went in. I never did drink it myself, I wanted to believe it was a magical elixir, but never tested it out.

Barbies and whatnot

I'm so glad there's someone else here who shares my favourite toys!

I loved my Barbies, in fact I still have them. My dad put together a custom Barbie house for me and it was my life's mission to find stuff to furnish it with. Growing up where I did, Barbie accessories were very scarce and impossible to find so together with my mum, we used to make matchbox furniture.

As I got a little older, I discovered Transformers and X-men action figures and those replaced Barbies as my favourite toys until Sega Mega drive came along.

Curiously, as a child I never liked baby dolls or any other 'play house' toys for some reason.

I had a Polly Pocket when I was a little kid that I used to play with before I fell asleep. Oh, and I was also given a Pink Power ranger, but that thing got burnt/shredded/ripped to pieces by the vacuum cleaner. That was when I learned that friction (spinning bristles in vacuum) can create enough heat to melt plastic.

Wow, I played with girl shit. It isn't any mystery why I ended up like I am now.

Then again, I was also into army men. One time my friends and I spent an afternoon creating a room sized battlefield that was meant to recreate World War 2 between the British, French and Germans. We switched up history a bit, and made the french a bunch of two faced bastards who would go into the enemy's base on peace operations only to plant a bomb on a tank. We even used rules such as british tanks could only destroy the german tanks if they were firing from behind.

I remember watching a history channel program on Allied vs German tanks in WWII. The German heavy tank, cant remember what it was called, might have been the Tiger, had armor that bounced British shells away, and had longer range and could one shot british tanks. In other words, the Germans hax.

Anyway, I never played with girl toys. That might been due to the fact I didnt have any sisters, only brothers, and my cousins were all much older than me.

I remember always wanting one of those electric ride on jeeps. Sigh....

My dad did show me how to make a bow and some arrows, with flattened nails for arrow heads. I nearly shot him by accident (launched high into the air and it nearly hit him, god I almost died).

Did you have the big chunk of plastic proton pack and the trap with the foot pedal that blew air into it and made it open? I thought I was so badass running around my basement with that gear.

Heck yeah! I also had the slime pack from the second movie.

I also had a bunch of the figures, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (including the Dome thing. the thing was HUGE when you're 5.), Masters of the Universe (I had his ship, but broke the support struts keeping it open, so the "elevator" never really worked). I also had Terminator 2 figures. How messed up is that? Action figures for an R rated movie. My best friend had all the Aliens figures, which came out 8 years after the movie was in theaters. Of course, LEGOs were a must, and all those Tiger Electronics handheld games. Star Trek: The Next Generation was totally awesome in handheld form.

The rest of the time I just read. Now I love looking around toy shops and I buy the little Lego action figure things, because they look badass. I wish I had some money to buy more Lego with now. I loved that space station so much since it was the closest I ever got to my childhood dream of becoming an Astronaut.

Followed closely was my talking KIT Trans AM from Knight Rider. It even came with a David Hasselhoff(chest hair not included) action figure!

After that was all my TMNT action figures. I had the Turtle van, but I could never talk my mom into buying me the turtle lair or he Technodrome.

Also I loved the GoBots. For some reason my mom refused to buy me any of the big Transformers. Something about them being too expensive. Excuses, excuses. Yet she bought me Bumblebee... yeah.

But you probably would have killed him.

I had one something like it. I did some of the experiments out of the manual but got bored and started mixing stuff together to see what would happen. This is when I figured out that potassium nitrate and sugar would burn like thermite. Most of my model tanks and war toys melted soon after that discovery.

My favorite GI Joe Action figure was a guy with an aussie hat and a mustache, don't remember the name

Did you have the one that was a squirt gun too?

I don't know if this was already posted, but a nice compilation of toys I remember seeing on TV, wanting, or playing at a friend's house:

That TV Days site has some amazing history!

My best friend had one of these!

Don't be offended, Bad Buddha....

....but I always thought that the Johnny Seven OMA was a fake toy they made up for Jingle All the Way (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116705/). I mean, the whole movie is about a made up toy in the first place - I didn't think they'd use an actual toy for Sinbad's little memory scene in the diner.

Also, Jingle All the Way kicks ass.

No, it never was released in Brazil, I only know about it because I saw It on ebay a couple of years ago, when I was hunting for the Blackbird Cobra Jet for a friend.

No time for love, Dr. Jones!

Glad to see someone else appreciates the character others consider the second worst character in the Indiana Jones series. The first being Willie.

I was fortunate enough to have an AT-AT back in the day. I coveted the mini walker though (AT-ST?).

Well the name really comes from being little vertically challenged IRL, plus I'm getting a little round around the waistline in my old age so hence the ShortRound.

Having said that, ShortRound Rocks in the Temple of doom, (and Data in The Goonies), but hey! you can't help some people.....

Not only Shorty, but this board and our old one had a lot of hate for Temple of Doom in general. Is it as good as Raiders? Of course not. But it was not the horrible mess some made it out to be. I loved it. The possessed Indy (the sleep of Kali-Ma, right?) was well done, and his and Short Round's relationship was just great.

I think people just needed one of the Indy movies to hate more than the others.
Now we have Crystal Skull...so Temple of Doom gets bumped back up. ;)

I still hate Willie though. The majority of her "dialogue" is shrieking like a harpy...no thanks.
How did she even get the part? Oh yeah, boning the director...carry on. :p

See, I found Last Crusade to be a less interesting movie, even if it was better executed as an overall film. When you consider they were originally going for the 40's serial, cliffhanger pulp type of feel, Temple of Doom fits the bill for me better than Last Crusade. Regardless, most of us can agree Crystal Skull was the weakest.

Hey, I actually enjoyed Crystal Skull. It was an enjoyable ride. Maybe I wasn't expecting anything more than to be entertained.

Temple of Doom was a decent flick. What worked best for it was that it was a one-off type film. It didn't even need to be an Indiana Jones flick...because it was just an adventure movie. The Last Crusade definitely felt like more of sequel to the Lost Ark and the continuities carried on to the Crystal Skull.

I never hated Temple of Doom... it's just that, like most people, it was my least favorite of the trilogy. ;) I actually loved Short Round. Whenever I think of him, I think, "Doctor Jones, Doctor Jones!"

I think I would have enjoyed Temple of Doom a bit more if she hadn't been in it. She just made me angry whenever she did anything. You know the part where Indy and Short Round are about to get squashed in that room and she freaks out because of the bugs and nearly lets them die? That makes me so angry every time I watch the movie.

See, I found Last Crusade to be a less interesting movie, even if it was better executed as an overall film. I think I enjoyed Last Crusade because of the dynamic between Indy and his dad. Sean Connery was pretty funny. Also: "No ticket."

Anyway, I love them all. Same with the Back to the Future trilogy. The first was the best, but I still found all three very enjoyable.

I had a toy when I was little that I would take with me EVERYWHERE...school, church, relatives' houses, whatever. It was a rubber puppet that was basically some sort of ugly monster head with arms, and a devil-like tail on the back. You could make it's mouth move, and also make its eyes go back and forth (I think). My mom hated it because of how weird it looked.

I can actually still remember how the thing smelled (like rubber, but not exactly), but I can't remember the name of it. Anyone have a damn clue what I am talking about? It was sort of like a goblin or something along those lines.

I'm sure none of us aren't familiar with Transformers toys, but the 6-in-1 Devastator was the pinnacle of awesomeness for me. I only ever got 5 of them though, so he was always one arm short. :(

On Monster in my Pocket, me and my friends had lots of those! We even made up a game using a checkerboard and made up stats and abilities for all the various characters. We would then fight them to the death. Even then, we were huge nerds.

The Constructicons were the first Transformers line to combine into another robot. I owned Devastator, it is probably still around somewhere. Some of the later combinations came in one box so you didn't have to buy all the separate robots.

I was the Transformers master in my school. Kids would bring their new Transformers and I would transform them without directions and people would be amazed (don't know why...it wasn't that hard to transform them, maybe I went to school with stupid people). Friend of mine got in big trouble for bringing Megatron on the bus though. Looking exactly like a gun did him no favors.

I'm trying to remember the hardest one to transform in my years. Omega Supreme was pretty hard if I remember, but he was also quite large. The city one was as well, but I forget his name.
