View Full Version : Beards of PAX 2011
Of all the random and awesome things to happen while I was at PAX this year- and there were many- this one was bizarre and hilarious. I was walking the show floor alone, I think checking out Nintendo's area, and I was approached by a young man with a video camera. "Excuse me sir... I couldn't help notice your excellent beard. I am cataloging the Beards of PAX for posterity's sake, and would be honored if I could add yours to my collection!". I was flattered and quickly agreed to a shot of my facial hair engineering. You'll find me at the 8 second mark, but it appears the beards get more epic as the video progresses.

This is hilarious and terrifying.
This is hilarrifying.
Which part? The amount of people with crazy beards, our propensity to share them- or that a guy trolls the floor collecting them?
There was a moment where I was very afraid what type of video "Beards of PAX" would become. I was hoping not to end up a gay porn star (again!).
Almost brought my beard + long goatee with me to PAX but decided the thing needed to go.
This I need to see. You were like the young statesman of PAX. Do you normally rock a Fu Manchu?

I like to think that song is the themesong that all beards play.
The Fu Manchu would be Rogue_Hunter.
I guess it's time to grow it out again..
Yeah but Rogue's is turning into something more "The South Will Rise Again" than "Kung Fu Theater".
We await your beard sir.

For some unknown reason, my body decided to start rejecting my beard a few years ago. Up until then, I'd been growing various goatees and such since my first whiskers sprouted. I decided to grow a full beard, a first for me, for my college graduation and it's commemorated by my grad picks in all its red ginger glory(brown hair, red beard).
After a few weeks, it got incredibly itchy and had to go. I found my chin splotched in red patches that turned dry and hurt as the days went on. Ever since then, the red marks appear if my beard goes beyond a work week. It still grows like a champ, but I just can't enjoy it anymore.
I still grow my chops regularly to scratch my beard itch, but it's just not the same.
Huh. Funny story, when I met my girlfriend, my moustache and beard would tear her face up when we kissed. I mean she'd have a really red, blotchy rash around her mouth for a few days. It took some time for her skin to get used to it, but for a little while I was worried the beard would have to go. Sounds similar to your reaction to your own beard. Are you Irish? :)
I wonder if you could try some lotion or conditioner to make the beard get past that stage?
Also, another side note. People don't generally like the appearance of grey hairs, but I have a couple in my beard and chops, and girls seem to love that for some reason.
As a rule, I don't let my facial hair curl. I use a trimmer to keep it just long enough to layer without curling, and not so short that it's "pokey".
The lumberjack look just isn't me, and the "just grew a beard this morning" look doesn't work because I still have some small bald patches. So it's best kept somewhere in the middle.

Chicks dig highlights. I have "strawberry blonde" hairs in my poor excuse for a beard. My brother has way more and the ladies seem to like it even more.
Interesting. And you're darker-skinned with black hair, that must be cool looking.
I had blond hair when I was younger, I mean really yellow to white. Now it's brownish, but my beard expresses blond, red, brown, and now apparently grey. My mustache is pretty much red.

On me it isn't as noticeable, but on my brother it's pretty apparent that he has multiple shades. I had a lot of red hairs when I was younger. My mom swears we have some European blood in us and that's why our hair comes out that way.
I like your technicolor facial hair. It makes the world a brighter place.
