Whether I am the DM or not, my favorite thing about Roleplaying is good NPC's. They can make flavorless worlds snap, can bring a game back from the dead and can create unity in a group and a world like none other.
So post your favorite NPC either you created for your own game that the players enjoyed, or that you experiences in a game someone else made.
For me it was a game of Fading Suns that went on for 7 years in reallife.
A Decados Lord that befouled everything our group did. Each battle we faced against him we took a bit of him with us. First an arm, then a leg, then half his face. Originally he was a evil force to be reckoned with but as he lost bits of his humanity I started dming him as a man who was possessed with the desire to end our lives but also slowly feeling the pain of constantly losing and dropping into a strange depression. He became a very sad figure slowly losing backing of his men and then his money but always finding us and always trying every trick in the book to end our lives.
In our last battle the heroes could not take it upon themselves to kill him, yet by that point his misery was almost too much to bear and he waded into battle with a look and demeanor as if he wanted to die.
He lay dying on the deck of a spaceship, bleeding out and one of our characters, a Hazat gave him proper rights as an enemy that not only earned our respect but in a really weird way deserved pity.
In our game whenever we faced off against anyone else, the players had a VERY real feeling of death around them and I found that they treated killing others in the game far different. They were hesitant to shoot their way through enemy ranks without giving warning. We still joke around and say, "Is he a Decados?" Whenever we hear or meet an enemy.
The Decados as a race turned from a mockery of the Harkonins of Dune to a sort of noble race that had lost its way. It still stands with me as probably the best NPC in our games ever.
