2D Boy apparently hates fans of their popular PC and WiiWare title World of Goo. So much so that they are not at all interested in making a sequel. Of course, they have good reasoning for it.

Can you see yourself making a sequel (or, better yet, bite-sized DLC add-on packs)? Or are you looking to move on to a different project next? What's the next step for 2D Boy?

Ron: No! No sequel! The only sequel to meet the expectations created by the original is The Empire Strikes Back, and even then, it was just because George Lucas didn't direct it. Also, we've eaten enough goo to last a life time and we're ready to do something else. They also talk about how the mouse and Wii remote are the perfect interfaces for controlling goo balls, so they aren't planning on making any versions of the game for XBLA or PSN. However, there is the possibility of a DS version, though they admit that the DS processor might not be able to handle the physics necessary. They also talk about how wonderful it is to be an indie developer!

The PS3 has mouse support though.

I do have to say, I am happy, it is refreshing to see someone not intent on running a good and popular idea into the ground. I would like to see what this team, their physics know how, and a catapault game would yield.

Ohh that sucks. Game would be great on XBLA or PSN.

Hmm. DS not have enough processing power? What about a downloadable version for the DSi? I'm just thinking the DSi has more processing power... maybe it would be enough.

Gonna have to agree with the almighty KingGorilla that it is very refreshing to see someone not EXPLOIT a good game.

Of course they can still say no. He's hardly put a dent into that hookers and blow money!

*sniff* Yea... the funds for that can run dry quickly :(

From what I've read, the DSi still has a 66MHz ARM9, but they bumped the memory up to 8MB. Well... you might be able to write a decent physics engine for that if you're John Carmack ;)

Blah blah blah, make one game and we know all about it do we. Pfff.

I could name dozens of sequels which are better than the first part in videogame world. Videogame sequels improve on the concept most of the time.

Hell, even a few movies.

Another game that got lost in the Fall onslaught. Another title added to the buy/rent list...

Hunh, so making a game that the market wants to play is exploiting it now eh? Good to know.

I downloaded the demo off Steam, but I have yet to play it.

I was referring to the mentality that some companies seem to have about only wanting to deal with exploitable games that can be re-sold year after year.

Let's turn this thread into talk about other direct sequels that are better than the original!

The Godfather Part II
Mega Man 2
Evil Dead 2
Street Fighter II (by a mile)
Clerks 2 (I said it)

Oh, I know. But you're just wrong in this case referring to it as that. Porting it to more platforms and *gasp* considering a sequel is in no way exploitive. So saying that you glad that they're not doing so, is an off-colour remark.

Fair enough. Thanks for the perspective. I agree.

Watch them both again within a week of each other; you may change your mind.

So saying that you glad that they're not doing so, is an off-colour remark. In this case, I think JayVe was using "exploit" ironically. But I agree with you that simply considering a sequel does not make a company or a property exploitative. Sometimes, a sequel might be warranted or even expected by the audience, just because the original was so good. I think this is especially true of the smaller arcade-style games we get on WiiWare, XBLA, and PSN. The episodic nature of some content these days means that sequels of downloadable games are not only more easily digestible, but practically demanded of the fans.

I know I ripped through World of Goo in no time at all, expecting a sequel to keep me coming back for more. To learn there will be no sequel is a bit saddening. I understand why, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

So, no XBLA or PSN version? They don't like money?

So, no XBLA or PSN version? They don't like money? It has to do with the controls. If you've ever seen World of Goo, you grab goo balls roaming around on a goo structure and drag and drop them to another location to keep building the structure towards a destination. With a mouse and Wii remote, it works perfectly. I can see the process being difficult to manage with a regular controller.

I think the original Clerks was more ground breaking and intellectually interesting, but Clerks 2 is better put together.

Are you making a gameplay vs graphics debate here? ;)

I'll go for the gameplay in the end then:p

Seriously, nothing tops the deathstar discussion, the porn-rental scene and the oh my god I just fucked a dead man!
