Hey hey hey! This is only if BK can't do it this year. She did awesome last year and if she'd like to do it again, I'd like her to have that chance. Although, at the point, she'll probably pass just to see Track deal with the headache.

Agreed.

You still seem to miss the mentality though. Oh, and the ID. They're pretty good at checking that in Seattle.

Yep. We got carded going into Shorty's and then again once we had stepped out with Bone and mightbe when they had a smoke we got carded goign back in again.

We'll just have to find some other giant Asian-Hispanic men hanging around the forums and get them to come ;)

I would like to see someone else try to use his ID. I doubt there are many who could pull it off. I think if it worked, I would have to buy that person a drink.

Or if they look like a slightly toasted Asian guy, a Native-American guy, or a person of Latin descent.

If we end up going, I think we should organize an airport to the hotel carpool. Like Dave did at Vons the last night there. Last year rini and I spent at least a hundred dollars on cabs alone.

Fucking ouch, bro! That sucks. Carpooling definitely saves money.

I had a lot of fun going to the underground comic shop with you guys last year. I hope you can both come back again this year.

I'm not a baseball fan, but if anyone else is planning on going to a Mariner's game this year I'd like to go. (Just as a head's up to anyone out there.)

Rogue was thinking of watching the game on Wed Night, so as long as you got in before then, you could probably catch that one.

I'll probably do as I did last year and fly in Wednesday night after work and then enjoy Thursday without concern and then it's PAX time on Friday.

Hey, as crazy as it was with me miscoordinating fly-in times and whatnot (and hanging out in the SEATAC USO for 10 hours), was that too much of a hassle for you guys last year? Or could we do this again this year?

Flying in and getting up with you before everything kicked off last year was definitely the way to go, but in retrospect I just wanted to make sure that that wasn't too much of a burden for everyone else that night.

Can't speak for Bone & Backseat, but it wasn't a hassle at all. I just hate you had to wait so long in the airport.

Son of a.....

Ha ha ha ha!!

That's funny.

How are BK and Bone doing? I just heard an episode of IGC where Scott mentioned them passing through and thought that was pretty cool. (They're good people, for those that might be reading this and haven't met them.)

Ugh... without going too deep into it, I am still recovering from what was termed "minimally invasive" spinal surgery, while Anjanette's been very busy at the "new" job (the one some of you guys heard her accept at PAX 2008). During my painkiller-and-muscle-relaxer-induced haze, I got word that my band was accepted to play South by Southwest (SXSW festival) this March- our first time and a HUGE deal for us.

Needless to say, we're not 100% positive we're coming to PAX. Even if we do, I'm not sure Anj wants to take the role of the organizer again. To be honest, it was more than a one-person job and we both ended up doing a lot of it last year. I'm not sure we have the energy for it but I won't speak for her. I'll just forward the thread to her and see what she thinks :)

Ultimately we still both want to go, so we'll see.

EDIT: as for the burden last year, there was none in waiting for you Dave. Meeting early with you and Scott was a nice way to begin the trip without being thrust into PAX immediately. If we go again we'll definitely need the extra day or two on either side as a PAX/reality buffer.

Regarding the Mariners game, once there's a subforum, I'll throw up a thread with information. The more people, the merrier! And Beth is demanding that we get the tickets for the left field bleachers or better. Center field was alright, it was just the constant cloud movement, alternating between the bright sun and clouds that was annoying and blinding.

Ha! That's cool. It might sound weird, but it's just one of those things where I wonder, you know? Because I just kind of showed up and all.

I saw the thing about you going to SXSW this year over on Facebook. That's pretty freakin' cool. I always see stuff about that over on Ain't It Cool News. I'm sure you'll have a blast.

This is the first I've heard/read about your surgery. I sure hope you're doing well and resting up/recovering. Hopefully everything worked out okay for you.

Nah, no worries. That was kind of a miscalculation on my part, if anything.

Ideally, I'd like to be stateside a little before PAX this year. I figure if I can take 2-4 weeks of leave then I can get at least a week at home with everyone and then do PAX and then come home and hang out a little more before finishing this remote tour.

That's because I'm smart enough to know the weather here is wacky and we want to have our backs to the sun so that we don't have bright... dark... bright :p

I'm also willing to bet that his "information" will include sending me the money for the tickets via paypal so I can just go down there and buy them all at once and get the mini discount for getting them before the day of the game

Pfft, no. Though, the paypal thing is a good idea, because a few people said that they would be there for the game, but didn't even end up at PAX. It would save money this way rather than order a bunch of tickets for people that don't even show up.

I think you might wanna wait until they actually, you know, post the hotel room deals so people can work out real details.Except the rooms tend to sell out pretty quick. As in 24-48 hours from the time they are made available IIRC. Might not be a bad idea to organize stuff ahead of time so that people can actually get a room.

The discounts are negotiated with Penny Arcade, though the prevailing thought is that this year the hotels will have more rooms slotted for PAX, and there is also the possibility of a few more hotels added this year.

I scoped out some places online, and they're running $200-ish a night. Owwww... was it like that last year, too?

It was $165-169 for double occupancy (depending on hotel with the PAX rate), and then extra occupant fees were tacked on based on the amount of room keys requested.

It's like I'm telling them they suck at their job (although, 9 times out of 10 they do). We had to use the house's guitar amps for this gig, to our dismay, but I think we did pretty well even though I was way over-distorted. It was just a warm-up for our big Friday night gig where we slew dragons.

No, that's something we'll keep working on. It's more of a combination of real-world crap: money, and lack of vacation days. Even if we make the money happen, there's only one way to guarantee both of our vacation days and that option is not a good one.

Maybe we'll attend via teleconference. I'll pay someone to wear a head-mounted camera and LCD screen :)

Any way they can ballpark that? Are we talking sellout expected in the next month, or in August (when I got my pass last year)?

Rogue_hunter
03-29-2009, 12:17 PM
I believe estimates are anywhere from 58k (roughly last year's number) to 65k. It's mostly related to building capacity, and I also believe one of the annexes is going to be undergoing renovation during PAX, so that slightly limits how many people can be there. My best guestimate would be selling out near June, but that's just a guess.

And you can pretty much ballpark attendance based on the fact that the extended hotel discounts (Wednesday to Monday) are virtually sold out, and the link to the hotels hasn't even gone up on the main PAX site. It was just in the forums, and has pretty much been gobbled up. This year is gonna be packed like last year.

Long gone are the days where you could just show up willy nilly and buy your pass for PAX at the door. Buy your passes now to avoid heartbreak (or scalpers, which may be a possibility this year).

What's funny is that in Washington you're allowed to scalp, but can only sell the tickets for the printed price. So, if you *have* to buy from a scalper you can point out that you can report them if they try to charge more than the printed price :D

See, this kinda sucks for me, because I don't want to buy my tickets yet.

I may be moving to Japan in July, but I haven't heard yes or no from the JET Programme just yet. If I don't get accepted, then I'll be here and will definitely want to go to PAX, but since there's a good chance I'll be halfway around the globe, I don't want to buy tickets now and not be able to use them.

I know PAX likes to keep things local to Seattle, but my experience at their convention center tells me it's REALLY TINY. If that's the biggest place in the state, it's time to do a Chi-town PAX... we have McCormick Place, and it's HUGE.

It's not the biggest, it's one of the smaller places. It's chosen for it's location and that it has multiple rooms of different sizes. The other bigger places are all one big room which wouldn't work well with having a bunch of different panels going on at the same time or they're a bit too far from the hotels to be "walking distance".

The convention center is the best place, and it isn't that tiny :p

I can't really give solid details, all I know is that we have already sold more in pre-sale than we sold all of last year in pre-sales. The expectation is currently that we will sell out well before PAX opens, and from the sounds of things that could mean in the next month or so, but don't quote me, and don't take anything I have said as concrete facts.

Actually, this helps perspective a lot, since some people were speculating that this year's "capacity" would be probably around last year's total attendance - so we are running to that threshold quickly it would appear. Thanks!

That sounds about accurate. An ex-Enforcer that is now working for the group that "runs" PAX is giving us in the PA forums PAX IRC channel similar figures. Though, he's figuring it would sell out closer to June/July. We have been taking bets though, and the general consensus is late June.

I was so excited about going, and I'm really sorry that I'll be missing out.

I was all set to go a few months ago, but now it just doesn't look doable. Buying a house is going to cost me a fair amount of money and time upfront, but save me a good amount of money in the long run. I was going to put off buying a home for a few more years, but the stars have aligned in my favor right now, and I might not get as good of a chance again for a while. Meanwhile, my cousin is getting married in Chicago in September, and that is going to cost me some money as well. Not much, but something, especially if I have to get a hotel room.

PAX is still a slight possibility, but as of now it's looking like a no. I still took the time off just in case. ;)

Really depends yeah. For me, $760 for flights, $1000 for the hotel for 5 days.
That'll hurt the pocketbook, but it's worth it.
