View Full Version : CoG Yahoo Fantasy Football 2011

Well, Football is officially back, which means only one thing. The CoG Fantasy Football League. I'd be happy to be the commissioner again for the Yahoo League. Just wanted to gauge interest.
Priority will be given to those who played last year. I would just ask that if you play you commit to the full season. I know the first year I did the EvAv League I never changed my roster...so I've been guilty of it. There is just nothing worse than Peyton Manning being on a team that has 6 players on bye and you are starting Tim Tebow.
When I get home tonight I'll look into setting it up again.

And if I'm not mistaken you have missed the draft the last two years?
The Draft date is purely temporary btw.
I'm not in favor of bringing any money into this. This league is at least 5 years old, and has always just been purely casual.

Just a note, we are discussing whether or not to revise the positions, this needs to be changed ASAP.
Draft was moved, and I am unsure if the admin is going to add more spots.
So, just wanted to say, when you do something like move the draft date, it is probably good practice to post a note on the league "messages from the commish" section as well as email everyone just to give them a heads up. I had no idea and thought it was saturday.
SO, players, adding 2 kickers and team DEF is one thing I want to see maybe adding QB and dropping a RB (not a lot of good ones and the WR/RB is essentially a 3rd RB spot). Lastly, there are currently 9 players required and 6 bench spots. In comparison it seems a bit much, putting too much out there for people to hog rather then playing well or strategically.
Just my usual gripe, but anyone up for turning off waivers and the can't cut list

Gents.
Had my money league draft last night. I picked 7th. League has some large bonuses for longish TDs. Non ppr. 1 QB 2 RB 3 WR 1 TE
Lineup will look like this:
QB Peyton Manning (Bradford if Manning still hurt)
RB Chris Johnson
RB Ahmad Bradshaw
WR Andre Johnson
WR Vincent Jackson
WR Chad Ochocinco
TE Jason Witten
Results by round (up until the scrubs)
Andre Johnson
Chris Johnson
Vincent Jackson
Peyton Manning
Ahmad Bradshaw
Jason Witten
Chad Ochocinco
Sam Bradford

My auto draft team ended up pretty good (my power was out so I couldn't make the draft). Romo, Fitzgerald, Hillis, Garcon, Pittsburgh. I even got one of my sleeper picks (Mark Ingram), although the computer did have me draft 2 kickers.

Invites sent to those who requested one. I suppose I could start a new thread, but I'm not sure there's enough activity to warrant it. Last year this thread acted as a catch-all for pretty much all NFL Fantasy discussion, which I thought worked out pretty well. Seems easier to have it all in one thread, especially since many of us play in more than one league anyway.

Anyone want to take a guess at the over/under for how many leagues Cam Newton is available in after waivers go through this week? The statistic I'm seeing right now is that he's available in approximately 57% of leagues. I'm going to guess that drops to 30%.

Cam Newton is a classic fantasy trap. He'll have a another good week or two, then the wake-up call game happens and he'll be like Mike Vick 2010.

I keep hoping Dick Cheney will show up to an Eagles game and shoot Mike Vick in the face. My wife gets a little perturbed that whenever I see him on TV I constantly shout "shoot him! shoot him!" That would certainly ruin the rest of his year.
I'm not sure that Newton is too much of a fantasy trap. He's got a fairly decent team around him, and I can't imagine that people really expect him to put up 400 yard games very often. But as the good doctor pointed out, he'll probably be a serviceable backup. Most QBs are inconsistent performers anyway. If he can get 200 yards and a TD during your starter's bye week, he's probably worth picking up.

I rarely see trades succeed. I got one for you that I forgot to reject, and when I got around to finally rejecting it, you had removed it.
In the 12 years or so I've been playing fantasy football I think I've accepted 4 trades total, and a couple of them were basically hail mary attempts to salvage a team with devastating injury issues. I also haven't seen more than maybe 10 trades per season in any one league, it's just so rare that anyone wants to trade for equal value. Someone is almost always trying to trade up.

In my league there are trades probably every 2 or 3 weeks. I have had 3 trades in one week, so forth. It all depends on the people playing.
This year, 3 so far one of them was 10 minutes after the draft with 6 players involved.
i know nothing about football... rosters/Player wise lol
Yahoo makes it really easy, they have an evaluate trade setup that shows projected points for the season nicely. A good trade would be something where you give up a good player for 2 solid ones that help you from playing 1 good player and one who rarely gets consistent points. things like that.
In most cases, for standard leagues, the trade is someone who needs a position player to fill an injure/spot and they have extra RB for instance, but need a qb or wr.
In my opinion, saying you "don't know players" isn't an excuse. You have the stats right in front of you on the trade screen, you can view season totals, past seasons, and you can even view the comparison between the players in question, see the latest news for the players, all in the same screen. Just give it a chance and you might end up with someone who goes off and wins it for you.

Yes, it adds value to a greater range of players. Darren Sproles is not a #1 RB, but you add in the return yards and he becomes a player that you might target in the first half of the draft. It works for players like Devin Hester as well. The idea was to try and make as many players as possible valuable contributors to a team.
An offensive player should get points for all he contributes to a team, especially in fantasy leagues. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your reasoning.

I'm looking to pick up the specific players I offered for, marshall, steve smith, etc. I can use either a WR or a RB, they play in my flex splot. Looking to upgrade from some of my people to people on different teams or higher up.

For the nfl.com league, waivers end thursday. Considering thursday night football for the rest of the season can we adjust/remove waivers so players can actually be picked up.

Sent trades out to 4 People, both nfl and yahoo leagues. PLEASE check your stuff. I need Clark's Conquest to email me ASAP (nabokovfan87@gmail.com) and let me know if you are actually going to play or not.
Well don't hold it against him if he doesn't get back to you- he just got another mouth to feed brought into the world last week. =)

That's perfectly fine, but clearing a roster is something that would free up players for the 6/12 that are actually trying.

Man I am terrible at this. I sat Ben Tate on the week he would have gained me some nice points.
I would have sat him too. Foster should have ALL the carries in that offense, but the matchup was so bad that both players had over 150 yds and a td or two. INSANITY.

If you are talking about the COG league, I just put up 141 points. I'm still in it. Had a baby and the week before was rough on the wife.
If you are talking about the team I took over where some lady picked players because she likes their names, I will drop that one. I really didn't expect to inherit a team THAT hopeless.
Sorry for the inactivity. Hey, about having teams drop their players....be careful with that. Make sure your waiver wire is set up so that it's not just a feeding frenzy and there is some order to who gets what picks.

I had an issue with the score on my league (see your emails). Everything was adjusted, and I picked up some players for you before everyone else, since you started at a disadvantage. I dislike waivers, I extremely dislike waivers, so any league I run will not have waivers. This week alone you could have picked up bennett, tons of def players better then ones you have (woodley from pb), dallas rb is still sitting there, lance moore, sidney rice, browns rb, helu, there are some team DEF up now, and other things are up now. Take a look, you should have a better chance now because a lot of teams are sitting, only 6-7 teams playing. If you don't want to play, I completely understand, you royally got screwed when Manning decided to leave for the year. Like I said before, if you don't want to play just drop your team.
I am sure you will have a far better experience next year if you decide to do it. I will be sure to email you an invite when the time comes.

No worries man, Depending on how it ends up I may open the playoffs to 8 ppl to ensure those that actually tried have a chance, so you DO have something to play for. Keep an eye on those injury reports and as always try out some trades to get what you need.
I completely understand you got shit going on, I just wanted to find out what was going on because I hadn't heard back in a while.

Was looking at the playoffs and how things are shaping out. The top one is the COG league, the bottom one is my league (offense/defense). I was sort of shocked this weekend at how close everything is. I attempt to do a scoring system where things are EVEN. A person doesn't need to know off/def but they may know a few players, or may know how to pick up people and research.
I am not posting this to shit on the cog leagues or the people in them or running them, but sort of a commentary on standard vs. custom leagues in general. I Noticed a few things:
The std league has high point players in high places as well as low. Even ranking by points against shows a scattered trend (apart from number 1 team having lowest pts against).
Next thing I noticed was active vs. non-active players. In the Cog league Aggie has managed a 5-5 record with doing absolutely nothing but signing up. You can see to the right, a loss from that team with well lower then the avg. score of the league. Makes me wonder why yahoo or nfl.com even have things the way they do. Why doesn't a standardized scoring system make it so that you have to do something to win. Autodraft shouldn't be so effective given the amount of byes and so forth. Also, the first place team has done essentially nothing as well. This likely means that there are "too many good players" available. No need to pick someone up, the people on the roster are all keepers for everyone.
Now, on my league, you have the highest score for as the winner, with the highest points against in second. It says that the guy in 2nd has had some guys go off on him/her and that they are essentially equal with the top team given the slight point difference in total score (12.16%). The major thing I noticed was half the league having the same record. This means the (standard) scheduling was effective at evening out the challenge towards each player and the points and totals are based on the relative quality of the team's roster in question. If you look at effort, the top teams have done well over 25-30 swaps during the season. Just goes to show, effort means something when you set things a specific way.
STD league (top 3 players):
1. 2nd place
2. 3rd place
3. 6th place
My league (top 3 players):
1. 1st place
2. 2nd place
3. 6th place

My league will likely end up with the following order going into the playoffs:
1. Vome
2. Gold Rush
3. Fins
4. Nerdblurb Wench
5. Mean Machine
6. Tankers
Makes no sense, but given the scheduling and projections it does. And just to prove I am better then my record:

So what does everyone thing about these comparisons. Do you notice anything else?

For those interested, I am going to be doing or trying to do a for money league. Nothing serious, just either 20-30 dollars, depending on what the majority decides. Will be a 10 team league with around 4-6 people so far. If anyone wants in just email/PM me and I will add you to the list when I send invites.
As far as these leagues, I know there were issues that I brought up at draft with using a standard league settings and possibly adding a DEF or other positions. I'm not sure who is "running" the cog leagues next year, but would be something to discuss now so that when the draft comes everything is set.
