UPDATE! August 22nd We've settled on a PAX Group picture time! It will be Saturday between 5pm-6pm in the lobby of the Convention center, (if we have the PAX shirts done, you're encouraged to wear them). Yes, we used to do it in the morning. Yes, we used to do it in the hotel lobby. We figure Saturday is the day most of the PAX goers will be in attendance, and doing it in the late afternoon doesn't have us waiting on anyone to "get up at at them" preventing people from getting a good place in the queue. And we chose the convention center because we're pretty much all going to be there already!

UPDATE! July 26th
If you purchase a ticket to the Blue Skittle Pre-PAX party, the paypal transaction might forward you to a page that gives you an error after the transaction completes. This shouldn't affect your purchase, you will receive a confirmation email from Elaine(Oopy) about your tickets. Also we've forgotten about our farewell dinner! We typically get all the coggers together (even some newly recruited ones from PAX) and do dinner, drinks and laughs on the las day of PAX. See the itinerary below for more details.

UPDATE! July 19th
It seems we've gravitated towards Beluga for keeping in contact while at PAX. If you don't know what it is, it's slim, and easy way to get notified by a group of people through various methods SMS, email, Beluga App. We will be Beluga-ing(?) and tweeting. I would strongly suggest Beluga for anyone attending PAX. We're going to start a pod and sending out invites, and we encourage you to send them out as well. There's apps for iPhone and Android.

http://belugapods.com

If you can't get into our pod, PM me your cell phone # and I'll set you up with SMS notifications/updating or an email address for email notifcations/updating.

(Original post)

PAX is a big event, REAL big, so big I've been there several times and still have yet to do it all. In this chaos we try to organize meetups for dinner, drinks, lunch, pictures, showdowns, playing in the LAN section together, etc. In the past we've done a phone list, twitter, etc. Nothing's ever fully worked, so we're doing mostly the same again.

This year there will be a Twitter Account CoGPAX you can follow to get updates about what's going down and when, or you can reply to the @CogPAX account about things going down in your area and we'll retweet them to the followers, and like before we encourage everyone to tweet all things PAX related with the hashtag #cogpax

http://twitter.com/#!/cogpax

For those new to the PAX experience, the veterans have some traditions we go through that we want to make aware to anyone attending. Most of these venues are for the over 21 crowd, not our doing mostly.

Wednesday Aug 24th (tentative):
Shorty's pinball bar (+21)
2222 2nd Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121
(1 mile from convention center)
http://www.shortydog.com/

We had the great opportunity to hang out here before Adam Sessler showed up one year and now it's nigh impossible to get in the door during PAX. Really not his fault, the place is cool on it's own merit, and somewhere between a few hundred 40K people each year try to go there during PAX. So this year we're hoping to go well before PAX starts and take a fistfull of quarters and beat the crowd. So if you're in town this evening, we'll tweet under the cogpax account if coggers will be there.

Thursday Aug 25th (around 6pm-whenever):
Von's Roasthouse (All ages)
619 Pine Street, Seattle, Washington
(1 block from convention center)
http://www.vonsroasthouse.com/

The night before PAX we like to do a community meet-up at a place called Von's (which I believe has the world's best pot-stickers) They have been accommodating to the size of our group and our geeky ways for years. Here we get the chance to put faces and voices to CoG names. Good food good drink. LiquidRain is organizing this meet-up in this thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=22593).

Thursday Aug 25th (Confirmed: CoG members attending)
The Blue Skittle Pre-PAX party (+21)
Garage Bowling and Billiards
1130 Broadway Ave
(.8 miles, I think entirely uphill)
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=150581841681461

Oopy from the blue skittle has been hosting a pre-pax party as far as I can remember. It's a public event, but you do need to order tickets. We've traditionally had a group of Coggers that were interested in going, and if there are this year we can snag a bunch of tickets. This year it's at a bowling/billiards/bar.

Saturday August 27th (Confirmed: IT IS SHUT DOWN JUST FOR OUR PRIVATE PARTY!)
Marcela's Cajun Cookery
Special thanks to Ghostbear for "cooking this up" for us :D
106 James Street
(.9 miles)
http://www.marcelascreolecookery.com

This has now become a "private event" because we're that damn awesome (and numerous) I don't know if there's a cap, but if you want to attend, contact Ghostbear!

Ghostbear says: "... it's delicious, not too expensive and delicious." Take it from me, convention "food" is ok to keep you going, but it's not the kind of food you can really enjoy.

Saturday Aug 27th between 5pm-6pm
CoG Group Picture (All ages)
Lobby of the Convention Center

We tend to get together on day 2 or 3 for a group picture in our shirts because there's a good amount of overlap with people coming and going to the expo. You don't have to get a shirt to be in the picture, but if you order one, (and receive one) WEAR IT! More information in this thread here (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=862494)

Throughout PAX
Community Focus (PG-13)

I will be running around with my little camera and a unipod doing community interviews again this year. I like to do a short 2-3 minute interview to bring PAX home to Coggers unable to attend. I'd like to get as many people as I can throughout the show, so I'll be looking for those t-shirts we're making.

Sunday Aug 28th TBD:
CoG Farewell Dinner
Von's Roasthouse (All ages): Tentatively

We typically close out PAX where we start it, at Von's, but we do typically get together for one last "good time" Details will surface on this during PAX most likely.

Monday Aug 29th
Post-Pax Seattle Monday
Datul is buying peanuts and crackerjacks

I don't know when anyone is leaving, but Shadowmage and I are sticking around until Tuesday. As a wind-down after PAX, we plan on hitting up some of Seattle on Monday afterwards.
We are currently planning on going to the Mariner's game on Monday (7p local), and picking up tix day of the game - it's vs the Angels; a team I've never seen live at a ballpark I haven't been to yet.
Anyone interested in catching a Last Place team play some ball after the con?

More information in this thread here (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=24094)

As things come up or change this post will be updated until we're in Seattle, then things will be updated through twitter. Remember to follow the CoGPAX twitter account, so you can get updates once you're in Seattle.

If anyone is interested in sharing a phone list in googledocs or something, just set it up and send me the link I'll post it here.

If any other Coggers have already planned other meet-ups or party invites they want to share, please post it here we'll add it to the list

I am a sad panda that I won't make either PAX this year, but you may rest assured I'll be following @CoGPAX on Twitter and being jealous the whole time. ;)

Play the shit out of Torchlight II for me, if that stupid game isn't out yet by then. I mean just never stop playing it.

Hey Aniako, cool starry bra. Seriously, thanks for collecting all this info here. One thing- have you ever used Beluga to get groups of people chatting? It's just a multi-user multi-platform chat/SMS app.

I'm definitely looking into that tonight, it might work really well for us. I don't want to rely on people having smart phones, that's why twitter was natural to reach towards with its SMS functionality. Thanks for the tip man this could work wonders for us :D

Looks like Beluga can also be used on laptops or any web browser. Aniako, maybe you and I can practice a bit. PM me an email address?

Beluga works pretty well, but so does Google+ Huddle. Just another option for those with smartphones.

So it seems like Beluga is entirely a Facebook driven thing now? I couldn't see a way to create an account accept "Connect with Facebook" which makes sense seeing as their frontpage says they were just acquired by Facebook.

Anyhow, I went ahead and did that, so if the way to get invited to the CoGPod is to PM my email address to Ani, I'll do that. Just a heads up for anybody who might hate Facebook or something, though.

I signed up for it last night using a beluga account. You have to click on sign in, and then there's a link to sign up at the bottom.

Ah. Okay cool. Good to know it's not FB-only. I'll try revoking access and signing up for a Beluga account.

EDIT: Nuts, looks like once it's done it's done. Ani, do I PM you my email to get added to the Pod?

Jackel

While I haven't tried them in a group setting yet, wouldn't huddles in G+ work better since most of us are already on Google whereas not nearly as many use Beluga?

AniAko
07-21-2011, 06:38 AM
The huddle app doesn't allow you to add someone by phone#(SMS) if they have a G+ account in your circles. That doesn't work well for people who want to be contacted by SMS. I ran both with Bone a little bit the other night and Beluga seemed more polished and I had less issues with it.

Of course if everyone wants to do G+ huddles we can do that instead. I'm just being courteous to members who might not have smart phones. I actually have no worries about our "core" veterans staying in touch, I know some members have been left out in the past, because they didn't know anyone from our core group. We can put it to a vote, and I'm going to do a bit more testing with huddles.

That being said, Beluga is as simple as it gets.

Bone
07-21-2011, 07:33 AM
Beluga also popped up like an SMS (and gave a notification buzz), where Huddle just added to the "inbox" tally on my G+ icon on the iPhone. I didn't notice Aniako had sent a Huddle message for awhile.

Sounds like you guys have done your homework, and I certainly do think we should be as accomodating to those who lack a smartphone.

Beluga appears to be currently unavailable for Windows Phone 7.
Since we don't want to leave out some folks (such as myself) from being unable to use Beluga (unless it works without a native app, e.g. via SMS only), perhaps we could utilize other alternatives that are available on all 3 major platforms?

I've done some searching and here are a couple of alternatives for WP7 people:

kik (http://www.kik.com/)- Available for WP7, iPhone, and Android
GroupMe (http://groupme.com/) - Available for WP7, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, SMS, CONFERENCE CALLING!

What do people think? Any experience with kik or groupme?

iHap
07-21-2011, 10:33 AM
No experience with groupme, but after setting it up on my phone. I like that you can invite from twitter, facebook, email, and phone. If you want to test out the groups send me a PM with your contact info.

You can also share your location which is a good thing to have. Don't know if Beluga has that but that's something that is a major plus for us.

wsuhoey
07-21-2011, 10:43 AM
Wow, GroupMe has conference calling!

wyeast
07-21-2011, 10:46 AM
I think we'll just end up having to plan for contingencies in either case. A lot of people end up out of signal/dead battery too. In past years the most reliable seemed to be what amounted to an SMS tree that people just spammed each other messages until it got through to everyone - and SMS's seemed to be a lot less sensitive to weak signal areas than anything that hinged on the phone's data connection.

"Location Sharing" is probably not as helpful for us since we'll basically be in various locations around the convention center - it's more useful when the locations are spread out throughout town.

I have beluga on this phone, tho I've never used it. I will try to check out groupme too.

iHap
07-21-2011, 10:52 AM
The location sharing would be helpful if people are trying to meetup for the few gathering events we have. Looking at Beluga it does have the sharing too. I think Groupme is just better since it has a more wide range of phones the app is available to. Not everyone has a Android or iPhone. ;)

wsuhoey
07-21-2011, 11:03 AM
Me and iHap are testing GroupMe. It seems to be working pretty well so far, but the WP7 app doesn't appear to have the location map integrated (yet?) which iPhone/Android may have. The WP7 app does have a "Preview" title which may mean it's a public beta.

wsuhoey
07-21-2011, 11:04 AM
Wyeast, PM myself or iHAP and either of us can add you to the GroupMe group.

EDIT: It's cool that any member can add any other member, which would make it easy to adminstrate and add other CoG'ers.

wyeast
07-21-2011, 11:07 AM
If either of you have the old PAX google doc, my #'s already on there.

wyeast
07-21-2011, 12:36 PM
Testing groupme now w/ iHap and WSUHoey. Could use a non-smartphone and blackberry tester. :D

On Android 2.1 and lower, the app does not have push enabled, so it has to poll the servers. At least w/ my phone, I had to restart it to have changes take effect on various settings (alert tone, poll time, etc). Right now it's polling every 30, but on the next restart it'll poll every 10. I'm a little concerned with battery, as it appears to gobble it down whenever I'm in-app and texting/reading...

Bone
07-21-2011, 12:40 PM
This is why we liked Beluga- you can use it as pure SMS if you want, which seemed simpler. I'm open to whatever works for the most people though.

wyeast
07-21-2011, 12:46 PM
I'm open to either. Like i said I may just resort to old fashioned texting if necessary. :) The question w/ beluga I think was if people could access it w/o an app? for (WP and non-smartphones?)

Bone
07-21-2011, 12:56 PM
Yeah, from what Aniako said (and by seeing how it adds members) you can add phone numbers to effectively create group SMS. Also works as a web app.

Given the relative height difference between myself and Jackel, I figure any missed shots will go safely well above me. :D

Bone, you have me wavering on my not going to the skittle party stance. Who all is going?

At least me and Scott, I think Aniako and Jackel and any number of degenerates in this thread!

I'm less in it for Blue Skittle and more for CoGs to hang out in a cool place after Von's.

Goddamit that is some cautionary shit right there. They should have to stick your eyeball on all alcohol sold if they're going to put cancer pics on cigarettes.

Let's try and restrain a little this year... maybe no carbombs or stoplights or Pukemakers, and just drink good ol' beer and have conversations? I don't want to die in 2011, I'm saving it all for the Mayan party at the end of '12.

EDIT: Fuck, man, did that hurt? Was it like "POP" "Oh hey, my eye just fucking exploded" or was it more like "Holy shit Jeremy, your eyeball is bleeding inside!!"?

Ghostbear

Holy shit, that's like three servings!

EDIT: Also, part of my comment was lost. Did that hurt? Did you hear a POP and suddenly scream "My eyeball just exploded!" or was it something your drinking buddies noticed and said "Hey Jeremy, your fucking eye is bleeding on the inside"?

Edit: I didnt feel anything in my eye. Of course all I felt was misery from what was the worst hangover in my life. I think Jackel pointed it out. It happened because I was puking so hard my eyeball couldn't take it apparently.

Also, I registered for Blue Skittle, and got the Paypal receipt, but no other email from Oopy. Should I have gotten another email?

The third option interests me since I have a UK phone and it's effectively shut down in the US (because like hell am I paying the obscene charges Three seem to want), I'll just need to use it like a iPod Touch and see if I can't steal wifi from somewhere.

There should be at least pockets of signal, like near the handheld gaming area, and nearby Starbucks, etc. In a pinch you can try to tether off someone's phone if they have WiFi tethering. :). (assuming they also have signal, which may not necessarily be true...)

I think last year there wasn't very many of us from CoG going. And honestly, there's some bit of truth behind AniAko's words. Guy's fucking organized as is his awesome wife.

Also, keep in mind that most of us going this year have been multiple years in the past so we kind of know what needs to be done on the organization part. And it's nothing against those who went last year and tried to organize, I just think with this many more people and getting such a head start on it all, it's really come together much more coherently.

Anyway, don't not come to the gatherings just cause you think you've pissed off a few people on the forums. Everyone here is welcome to join us at Vons and everywhere else. More the merrier as they say.

We've settled on a PAX Group picture time! It will be Saturday at 5pm in the lobby of the Convention center, (if we have the PAX shirts done, you're encouraged to wear them).
