Picks of the Week

Fables #78 - I haven't mentioned this book in a while, but Willingham has done something which most creators would be terrified to do: change the core conflict of the series for good. From day one the series has revolved around the war (or potential war) with the Adversary: the warlord who had conquered the Fables' homelands. But a few issues back the unthinkable happened, the war was ended, and the dreaded Adversary joined the Fabletown community in New York City. It's something you'd expect to happen in the final issues of the series, but Willingham intends to keep the book going for a long time to come.

JSA Kingdom Come Special Superman #1 - Alex Ross doesn't do many interiors anymore, so any chance to grab some of his art is a treat. Even better, from the previews I've seen, he's evolved his style a little; cleaner, more well defined characters with less of the 'bleed' which plagued some of his art. This special is the beginning of the end of the Kingdom Come storyline in JSA, and promises the ultimate smackdown between the KC Superman and the regular Superman.

Wolverine #69 - Will Old Man Logan go down as one of the all time great storylines? No, but it's been fun, a pleasant road trip through a post-apocalyptic Marvel U. The delays have hurt it, but the central questions of the book - what broke the world, and why has Logan not popped his claws in 80 years - are compelling enough to gloss over some of Millar's ego trips. Plus, Spider-Mobile!

Question of the Week - Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe launches this week, and even though the game itself features toned down fatalities, that doesn't mean we can't speculate! Give me the character - in any universe - and what fatality you'd give them.

As I've said before, that was supposed to be the end of Fables. But Willingham seems to have understood just what he made here. Something that can easily be considered the best book currently being published... that wasn't canceled after 12 issues. You keep that fucker going until they drag you away kicking and screaming.

I've only been reading Fables in trade (from the library) but that's interesting to hear. I didn't know The Adversary had been defeated... and reformed!

Interesting indeed.

Anyway, my list!

Dark Horse
Buffy Season 8 Vol. 3

DC
BOOSTER GOLD #14

POTW - Booster Gold #14 - Sort of an anti-pick as I'm almost finished with this book, which is a shame. I'll see if this second installment of the Starro thing holds up or if it loses me.

QOTW - Deadpool throwing the defeated character through the fourth wall.

I'd also like to see Sleepwalker use his reality warping beam on the fallen to morph the ground around them and squeeze them till they pop. Yeah...

QOTW:
Invincible. Punching through the opponent

Anybody from Nextwave, doing whatever.

Not for everyone! the TPB-ers are still behind.Exactly. I think the last issue I'd read was issue #50 or so.

Big shock, they win. It's like saying Superman beats Brainiac or something in the next issue, it's like "yeah, that's what he does".

Now the details, therein lies the interesting part... granted it's Fables and is prone to pulling crazy shit, if they lost and everyone died it would of pretty much ended anyway.

As a trade paperback reader, I've come to accept that little of what I read will surprise me because it will have been "spoiled" online. I put "spoiled" in quotes because though a surprise twist can be exciting, I have to rely on the fact that good writing and good art are still enjoyable even if I know where it's going. If knowing where the plot was going was all that made reading fun I could just use Wikipedia (or these threads) to find out what's going on and save a ton of money. There probably should be a window where spoilers are protected, but after a while the information is just out there, man.

QOTW - Spidey - Webs them up, leaves note stuck to them. Bigby Wolf - Turns into wolf form and bites/eats opponent. Elijah Snow - Freezes opponent, kicks genitals off. Rorschach - (Friendship) Gives opponent a hug, opponent recoils from the smell. Squirrel Girl - an army of squirrels covers the opponent's body, leaving nothing but a skeleton. Mr. Immortal - Kills himself.

I'm sorry about the spoiler folks, I just didn't think. I've put it under wraps for now.

Ah, it's ok, Doc. We all knew good would prevail :)

Ok, so I guess if the discussion is on the table, what's the appropriate time interval before something ceases being a spoiler? When would the plot point mentioned from Fables be something people could freely discuss.

As I mentioned above, I just gave up trying to maintain ignorance long ago because it just seemed like a losing battle. Whether it's the end to a movie or Cap's death, we just live in a time when avoiding "spoilers" would mean avoiding all the places that I like to go for news and info, so I just stopped caring.

As long as he doesn't go into specifics, I'm cool with the Fables spoiler.

Was I the only one really thinking they're not gonna make it? Wow!

But what the world really needs is Jack of Fables! I like Fables, but Jack is too awesome!

Well I can avoid spoilers like its a plague. I didn't peek a single trailer, a single poster or even single news item about Dark Knight. What I got was one of the best movie watching experience of my time!

Elijah Snow - Freezes opponent, kicks genitals off.
