View Full Version : Mystery Science Theater, 20 Years Old

MST3k turned 20 this month. The New York Times has an article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/arts/television/09dave.html?_r=2&ref=television&oref=slogin&oref=slogin) summarizing the show's origins and what the creators are up to now.

I bet a lot of people on here love this show as much as I do. As a kid I watched them on Sci Fi and VHS, and I downloaded 100 gigs of AVIs a few years ago (spread the tapes!).

My favorites are The Final Sacrifice, Pumaman, Master Ninja, and of course Pod People.

God I love MST3K, unfortunately it has never been released properly in Europe, and so I am forced to watch it on Youtube. Or import the box sets and buy an American dvd player.

Man, that movie was so bad even the MSt3k guys couldn't save it. One of the worst movie watching experiences of my life.

In fairness, without the MST3k commentary, I probably would've taken a power drill to my skull after about 20 minutes, but still, damn it was bad.

Space Mutiny and Agent for H.A.R.M. are my favorites. I have the last three seasons in avi format and used to have them all on VHS. I've probably seen them all around 50 times or so. Just about my favorite thing in the world.

I used to rotate through all of Big McLarghuge's names while playing Heavy in original (quake 1) Team Fortress. That was good times.

In the last season(I think) there was an episode where they watched a german version of hamlet (dubbed) and it was just perfect.

I just glanced up.. and this tape is actually currently sitting on my desk... staring at me.

I've come to add to the MST3K love. Lots of fond memories of watching it with my dad when Comedy Central used to air it. When I'm home for the holidays we usually have a marathon of the DVD sets.

Keep circulating the tapes.

I can't believe the thread got this far before someone mentioned Rifftrax. My girlfriend and I watch about two a week.

When we first met, one of the things we bonded over was our love for MST3K.

My favorite episode is either Overdrawn at the Memory Bank or Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders (featuring Ernest Borgnine!).

No love for Jack Frost? My God, the hilarity. Space Mutiny is probably my favourite though, I almost died during that floor scrubber chase scene. Pumaman is another great one.

Oh! And the shorts! So much deliciousness.

As usual, in Australia we get screwed for this stuff so I've had to rely on luck and downloads. The only time I've ever seen it featured here was on Channel 10 one late night before my VCE English exam when they played the MST3K movie.

I couldn't agree more. Or at least box sets of the seasons. The sets they have now seem so sporadic and expensive, it's kept me from taking the plunge and buying any.

Now, releasing by season on Blu-Ray, but still in SD so you can cram more episodes on a disc, I could live with that.

I liked Joel better. He had funnier skits and songs, was more of an everyman, and stayed public access.

Plus I always thought Pearl was obnoxious.

Technically, they are Mike, Servo, and Crow.

I saw a rifftrax at the Stone Brewery in Escondido earlier this year that was presented by Mike, Kevin, and Bill. I went to use the bathroom, and they were all three lined up at the urinals, joking around. It was the closest I have ever knowingly peed to a celebrity.

They need to work out some kind of way to get movies with the Rifftrax already built in.

The official Rifftrax site has a special video player you can download for free that syncs it up for you. You can also download movies from torrent sites with the Rifftrax built in, but these guys fully deserve to be paid for their creations, so only do that if you've already bought the riff in question.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so I'll just bump this one.

Apparently, someone has decided to upload the majority of the MST3K library onto a streaming internet TV channel. The channel has a day long scheduel of episodes, so keep a look out for ones that catch your eye. Once a day, during prime time, they air a Rifftrax movie as well. I just watched 300 earlier tonight, The Wicker Man is tomorrow and Jurassic Park on Sunday. They've even got a running chat for everyone to throw up their own comments. If you like MST3K, give it a look.

I honestly think Rifftrax is as good as MST3K was in the ninth season, which in my mind was the "new guard's" prime. Then we have Cinematic Titanic, which is an extension of the Joel era, and watching that reminded me that, yes, I preferred the later Mike years to the Joel ones.
