Or Armistice Day or Rememberance Day depending on where you live. Don't know how many vets we have on here, but everyone's made a difference, even GunnyMo (even me, I hope).

In celebration, and since the Marine Corps birthday was yesterday, and to start shit with the other other services, I offer this:

Thanks!

After work I go home to toast my Father (Korea), my Grandfather (WWI), my Uncles (WWII) and my Father-in-law (Korea & Vietnam) and then all the other heroes that they served with!

My Father and I used to toast my Grandfather with cheap rotgut whiskey, because that's what Grandpa had in the trenches when he and his buddies celebrated Armistice Day. We switched to single-malt scotch because as Dad put it: "I fought so that we didn't have to live like savages!" I sure miss that guy!

Thanks again!

rofl that is hilarious and quite honestly true. Marines, while being the most insane (as I have well evidenced), are clearly the best. :D

It's ok. When Komrade Obama institutes his civilian secret police, of which I will be a part of, I will be sure to have neutralism up against the wall. :p

I kid! I freakin' love Obama! Voted for him! Yay! Seriously. But I'll still find away to put those filthy neutrals up against some sort of wall

If I'm picking up what you're putting down, you're in a different branch of the service, right? I think Purple Santa thought you were a civilian who was dismissing either the Marine Corps or veterans in general, and that upset him.

Neutralism was simply trying for some smart assery, inter-service harassment out of pure jealousy for the clearly superior branch of the US military. :D

Now, chill or so help me I'll turn this thread around!

Well, I had another Marine joke I was going to post for you and Iron Past, but I didn't want to have to explain it twice.... :D

Seriously, I have nothing but love for the Marines. They liberated my island from the Japanese. True Story: My uncle was rescued from a internment camp by the Marines during the Liberation. Later, he became the commanding officer of the very unit that saved him. :)

I worked with a couple of Leathernecks from the 1st MEF the last time I was in Iraq. When it comes to Marines, all stereotypes are true... :D

I called my dad to wish him a...well, I guess "happy" Veteran's Day (I dunno if happy is what I would call a day set aside for appreciation and somber reflection, but anyway...).

He told me that he and my mom had to put their kitty to sleep today. It was 19 years old - I was 11 when we got that cat. He seemed at peace with the decision, but I know it's probably eating him up. I've only seen him cry 3 times: When his mom died, when he saw an overhead shot of Vietnam that reminded him of flying helicopters there, and when our last cat died. The first two were the kind of "manly" crying people do, but the last one was like a little kid.

I felt really bad for him and my mom. Kind of a shitty day for him/them.

Just to take some of the heavy drama out of this thread, I'm reminded of this incident...

... years ago we were at Bumbershoot in Seattle. For those who don't know, it's a festival of art and music that lasts through Labor Day weekend.

For whatever reason, I happened to notice these 3 blowhards during one of the concerts. High and tight, full of alcohol and pride, mackin' on the ladies, playing the "Hey baby, I'm fighting for your freedom" card. Ok fine, let them have their fun.

Later that day, we were standing in this loooong line... I think it was for the Everclear concert. I happen to notice these same clowns pushing their way up the line. As they moved past some people, they tried to play the veteran card, and how we should let them move up in line.

They moved past us, and into the group of folks ahead of us. A few couples, probably 40's or 50's, kinda unassuming. One of the gentlemen stops these three guys. They mumble about how some friends are waiting for them up front. Nuh uh, he doesn't let them past. The guys try to play up the veteran card again.

Gentleman says something about "Oh, you guys are from Fort Lewis? Lemme see your military ID."

Dudes refuse. He asks them again. They refuse again.

Gentleman says something along the lines of "C'mon fellas, your military ID. You know? Kinda looks like this one," upon which he pulls an ID out if his pocket. "Of course, yours probably won't say colonel..."

The one kid in back starts to backpedal hard, but crashes into one of the other older gents in the group, corralling these three suckers in as the first guy proceeds to read them the riot act about conduct unbecoming of servicemen. After receiving their tongue lashing, the three guys go skittering off to the back of the line, while the rest of us civvies proceed to applaud the guys in front of us.

Just something that popped into my head reading all this. For all you men and women in service, whether you're in Iraq, Madagascar, or East Precinct in Seattle, thank you from all of us. Just don't let it get to your head. You never know when you're gonna stumble into someone who outranks you. :D

awesome story full of awesome sauce

haha that's awesome! :D

I am a WWII buff and am thrilled any time I get the chance to talk to those vets. When I worked at GameStop, a black gentleman came in with some of his grandchildren one Sunday. He had on a hat that said, "Tuskegee Airman". My first thought was, "Naw, couldn't be. Not in my store." So I politely asked him, "Sir, are you a Tuskegee Airman?" With a glint of pride in his eyes and voice he said, "Yes, I am." I only had the opportunity to talk to him for a few minutes before the youngin's pulled him away but, wow!, so amazing for me to actually meet one of the fabled Tuskegee Airman.

What a great day. What great sentiment. Those are awesome stories, and thanks to you guys who have served.

I'ma call my grandmother now and hear more about her nursin' days in the Army.

There's nothing like listening to your grandfather's stories as you grow up, and then relaying them to a friend one day and getting choked up. That happened. My blood did that, before I was born.

I don't get the army vs marines joke :(

Both my parents were in the Navy Reserves for long enough to get retirement and then some. I always wanted to do that for a few years and follow in their footsteps. Do some cool work on a boat in far off ports, see the world, do a service for my country, etc. I had a bunch of friends that went that route too (what is it with people from landlocked South Dakota wanting to explore the seven seas? :p). But during the course of college I racked up student loan debt and met a girl. I don't think the girl would like me going off for training and sailing and whatnot, and I wouldn't have been able to make my student loan payments on the relatively low pay during basic training.

But for all those of you that have served, either in foreign lands or here in America, I tip my hat to you fine sirs (and ladies).

News flash, The navy hasn't had those pants in 20 years, and they did have a functional purpose, if you went into the water they were meant to be easy to roll up, therefore allowing easier swimming, but I guess we can't all join the branch where you are punished for having an IQ bigger than your shoe size

My apologies then, but its been awhile, and I never had to wear them. I worked with a lot of marines. You know what the difference between marines and all the other branches are? Ask anyone in the navy, air force, army or coast guard what they do for a living and they'll say, "I'm in the navy" ask someone in the marine corps? "I AM a marine." buncha crazies.
