Choose your own adventure books were great. I had quite a few of the Steve Jackson books as a kid. Deathtrap Dungeon kicked ass.
Eurogamer clearly feels the same, as they have an interesting article up on these analog single player RPGs.

I used to love the FF books, I even wrote a short half life fan fiction one when I was younger :) It was brutal as it was taking forever so you could very easily find that a head crab had just ripped your face off

I absolutely loved the Lone Wolf series when I was growing up. I think I eventually ended up owning 15+ of them. They took a backseat, unfortunately, when I discovered D&D. Still an important part of my formative geek years.

I think the orc fight is bugged. I've clicked him about a hundred times and nothing happens.

Same here. I've (semi) recently reacquired my books and read a few. I plan on letting my son give them ago when he's old enough. ("Old enough" first and foremost meaning: able to read.)

I loved CYOA books. I still have a handful of my old D&D ones, and used to get them from my local library.
For those who are interested in the Lone Wolf series, you have to check out Seventh Sense (http://www.projectaon.org/staff/david/). It's a PC program that run the books for you (picks off the RN table, prompts you for actions, etc.) and supports the first 10 or so books as of now. It will even keep track of your character sheet and inventory from book to book. Best of all, it's totally free and was given the go-ahead by series author Joe Dever.

Check out the little blurb I wrote about Tales of the Arabian nights, a board game that uses exactly this kind of mechanic in its core gameplay, and is a LOT of fun.
