I haven't gotten all that far into it, but the single player is pretty impressive. The graphics are a little better at the outset than I'd expected after Quantum of Solace, and the framerate stays solid despite huge explosions and mobs of enemies/allies in play. Great water effects and outstanding explosions.
In the first mission or two, in the jungle setting, it's difficult to tell enemies from allies. It doesn't seem to punish you for shooting friendlies though, at least on the settings I was on (second difficulty from highest, can't recall the name offhand), but you do get tagged quite a bit from a distance. You can, as usual, hide behind cover and recover health but it's frustrating to get popped again as soon as you emerge from cover.
Enemies respawn, forcing you to continually move forward. I had an easier time knowing where I was supposed to go than in CoD4 however - the checkpoint icons are far closer together this time around, which makes for a more effective guide.
Aiming is good, maybe a little wonky on the bazooka but that's likely just a need to learn the drop rate on it. I almost wish they'd included a cover mode like in Quantum of Solace - there are an awful lot of doorways/stumps/sandbag walls that I wish I could stop and pop from. Call of Duty could use a Rainbow Six Vegas-like third-person cover system, just to add something new to the franchise.
Good use of audio, particularly for surround sound setups. Really adds to the tension, especially when you can hear dogs coming from a mile away.
I don't think, at this point, that it's better than CoD4 was - but it's not far behind. I'm pretty sick of the WWII setting, but they did the mission briefings in a pretty cool way and that helps a bit. It also helps that, outside of Rising Sun (I think, I managed to ignore that one), some of the ground here hasn't been covered much at all.
The multiplayer seems to have the same potential for addiction that CoD4 did - so it's a safe bet for online gamers. The perks maybe don't fit quite as well as they did in CoD4, but they're still fun to store up and unleash.
