The way they explained it on the air a minute ago, every ten dollars equates to one raffle ticket, which you'll be able to distribute among the items up for raffle as you please. They also said it was cumulative, I believe, so I guess you can donate through-out the drive and get credit for all donations. The prizes are apparently really unique, one of them being a customized answering machine message from David Hayter!

Glad to see this collection get started. I've been holding off on my donation so that I could pitch in with this site. :)

EG, I can understand the sentiment you make regarding other charities. This is going to be a tough year for all charities I imagine as people tighten their belts. I think this charity goes beyond just buying games for sick kids though. It's improving quality of life for people that very desperately need it. I think that alone can make the difference to a lot of people.

Holy Mackerel! I can't believe how much money has already been raised. I'll be chipping in on Thursday (payday)!

Straximus
11-10-2008, 09:21 PM
I appreciate what the PA guys do, but there are so many better charities that do more important things in my opinion. Buying people videogames, even sick children, has always seemed pretty insignificant to me compared to donating money towards starving families or funding cancer or AIDs research. Or even helping the homeless.

Then please, I suggest you help raise money for those charities rather than post things like this in this thread. Money that is donated to one charity is almost never money that wasn't donated to another. People are motivated to donate for their chosen charities for a variety of personal reasons, and telling them their donation, a personal sacrifice, could be put to better use somewhere else does nothing to inspire them to donate further. If anything, they may choose not to donate at all.

One million dollars (what CP raised last year) toward AIDS or cancer research is a drop in an ocean. That research is financed into the billions of dollars. For someone whose annual charitable budget is in the double digits, small charities like Child's Play offer people of modest means to make a big impact on someone's life in a positive way. You can walk away with an immediate feeling of accomplishment. These children's hospitals have said that their medical and research needs are very well funded. Until Child's Play came along, there was no one meeting this very specific and important need, because everyone was focused on the "bigger", "more important" problems. A child's state of mind is critically important to the recovery process. Thanks to this charity, Children's hospitals are finally getting the funding they need to care for their patients in this area.

So please, let's be done with this issue for this year (as it comes up every year), and focus on doing something positive.

MosBen
11-10-2008, 09:24 PM
Ok Straximus, you had a much better defense of Child's Play than I did.

Ravenlock
11-10-2008, 09:31 PM
Bravo, Straximus. As someone who has spent more time than most people do in Childrens' Hospitals, both as a patient and as a friend/family member/counselor, I can say without hesitation or reservation that this sort of thing absolutely matters to the patients and families that have to stay in cramped quarters, under high stress, sometimes for weeks at a time.

None of us is pretending that Child's Play will cure AIDS. But its impact is 100% not trivial.

I'm trying to convince the wife to allow a sizeable donation. Not for the kids, mind you. I'm just willing to spend a lot of money for the chance to have Solid Snake take my calls. When I saw that, I yelled "OMG are you serious?!?", and my coworkers all asked me if I was OK :)

I have a cardboard standee of Solid Snake from Snake Eater in the trunk of my car. Been there for 4 years, and it will probably transition to my new car someday. Makes me feel safe, lol

I normally donate through the CP Amazon Wish list, but I'm happy to do it through CoG this year. Plus, if I somehow manage to win that totally fucking bad ass clock in the process, life will be grand.

Also, I can't believe someone would actually come in here and take a crap on people who are willing to donate to a charity by saying our charity of choice isn't important enough. Don't tell me I'm doing something wrong by choosing to donate to a charity that makes a visible, tangible difference in the lives of some very sick children.

They do not take used stuff, it has to be in the original shrink wrap and stuff. Used stuff may be contaminated with, whatever (e.g. fungus or mold), which for some of the kids could make them even more sick, especially if they are immunologically deficient.

Alright guys. This is a thread about a charity and should be filled with good-will. I can understand EG's reasoning for bringing up his point, but I think it would be better served if it was taken into another thread. It seems to be developing into a more heated discussion that probably shouldn't be in this one. Stuff like this turns people off to charities, not the opposite.

NoName
11-11-2008, 09:51 AM
The reason being that if everyone scrutinized why and where they were donating money, the money would go a lot further and do a lot more good.

I'm donating here at CoG because any cash that goes to Child's Play becomes grant money for Children's Hospitals to use for new equipment.

I'm donating a game (or two) to my local Children's Hospital because I want to support them (the local part) and I really like the idea of the children having something to distract them while they're there.

There's where my money is going. There, I scrutinized my spending. So does this make it better now?

If people in this thread are allowed to encourage people to donate, I don't understand why asking questions about whether or not there are better uses of that money are not directly related as well.Because this thread is about Child's Play, not a contest about who can donate to the better charity.

Read this (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/letter05.php) before you try to convince us that CP isn't as necessary as any other charity out there.

These kids are going through hell. Child's Play provides them with something they know, something they can hang on to while they fight for their lives in an environment that's less than ideal, to say the least.

Here you go. I went ahead and made a thread to discuss charity donation effectiveness. I would ask that continued discussion on the topic be taken there.
Thanks! :)

Unnecessary.

I wouldn't say that, It's an accurate assessment.

We're doing something good here, and he walks in saying how what we're doing isn't important enough? That we're only donating money because the "cool kids" are doing it? That's a huge dick move.

Granted. That's why I was talking about the condescension in his posts. It's apparent in several of his posts and I wanted to call him out on it. I just always feel that resorting to base namecalling turns a mature discussion into a bunch of people shutting out others because 'he called me this and I called him that and...'

You get the idea. :D

Being condescending/sarcastic/etc is just an indirect way of going for the same effect. I don't really see how one is necessarily "better" than the other.

Edit: And on that note, I'll end my derailment of this thread, haha.

Over 50% already? Damn, that is nice.

Also, I think this re-enforces an idea brought up during the founding of CoG (sorry, cannot remember who said it specifically): we should choose a cause each month (maybe each quarter would work better), and have a donation drive for that charity. There should always be a charity we can donate to in CoG's name.

Sweet Cracker, that money went up quick in such a short amount of time. I put in some dough and will put more in when I can. As for the whole question of worthiness, I could only answer with a loud "fuck yes".

Every year I participate in a Christmas present drive for inner-city kids here in Chicago. And what nearly every kid asks for is a toy. Is it the most practical gift for them? Fuck no - clothes would be better. But having worked very closely with these kinds of kids for more than ten years of my life I've realized a few things. One of those is that sometimes, no matter what is going on around them (gangs, drugs, violence, etc), they just want to be a kid. Just play like other kids; like "normal" kids.

A toy won't cure cancer or keep a child warm at night. But it will help them feel that their life has some normalcy, some sense of connection to others around them. And that is worth my money, IMHO.

If it's the same as the ChipIn donation drive I did, you can still continue to donate after the goal has been reached. The creator of the drive can also opt to increase the goal if he wants. It'd probably be a good idea to go a bit over $5,000 because Paypal takes about 1-2% of each donation. When we hit $400 for the PS3 drive, we actually really only had about $380 or so, if I remember correctly.

Not sure if someone has voiced this opinion yet, but I disagree with using child's play in order to advertise CoG. I fully support our raising money within the community as we're doing with this drive, but any offsite advertisements should be directed towards the charity itself (or one of those special drives where people do crazy things for donations), not a community drive.

Advertising anything other than the main charity should only be done if the thing being advertised is special enough that it will generate more support. Maybe a competition between communities to see who can raise the most money?

The idea here is that the raffle items will generate more support. Someone who may not know about Child's Play or may not be thinking about donating money to Child's Play may see that they can win a voicemail recording from David Hayter and throw in some money that the charity would not have seen otherwise. We hope to both raise awareness and support for Child's Play this year, and it's always nice to do something like this with your community, even be it a virtual one.

That's probably directed at me, since I said I'd gotten a blog frontpaged at Pwned.com.

One of the main reasons I put that there in the first place is because I asked around to see if the site was doing anything for Child's Play. There was basically a resounding, "What's Child's Play?" - so I responded with the blog.

In my blog, I tell people to head to the actual Child's Play website first (telling people they can donate money, or gift items from Amazon to their local hospital of choice), but then I go into the fact that separate sites are having donation drives, and I mention the one we're having here. (Lots of people there know that this site is my main hangout.)

I'm not using the charity to try and get hits to this website, although if we get a couple of new members here, great. My mindset is: they're another community with similar interests and seemingly not doing anything for Child's Play - why not let them donate in our donation drive if they want the chance to win some raffle prizes?

I mean, if we can be generous and give money to the charity, can't we be generous to share in some of our prizes to other people who are being just as generous to the charity?

If Pwned.com all of a sudden unveils some grand donation drive of their own, I'll pull my blog. In the meantime, I've actually talked to a few people over there who weren't aware of Child's Play at all, and have actually donated over here. I think that's pretty damn cool, myself.

Dave, I was just informed that the banner is only on the "dark theme" of the site. So if you have a white/lighter background, it won't be there. My bad. We're gonna get that fixed.

Interesting. Alright.

I'll be in touch sometime this weekend, to get up with you all after payday.

Awesome job, thus far.

You should be able to see a large widget in the first post here. (We're at 3110 by the way!!!)

Psykoboy2

All that seems to do is take you to the first post underneath it (posted by Dana, listing the raffle prizes)... am I missing something on here or maybe doing it wrong?

Not sure. When I click on the banner, it takes me to the first post of this thread that contains the total donations widget. If it takes you to Dana's post, then just above it should be, again, the total donations widget.

I'm definitely putting some money in!

I remember when PA first launched this a few years back. I ordered some toys off of Amazon that year. It's amazing how quickly it's grown since that time. I know that this charity makes a big difference in the lives of kids. Hospitals are miserable places for sick children and their families, and this charity allows them to have some small comfort during their stay.

For anyone having trouble viewing the widget, there's a few things you can do.

- Make sure you have flash (and if it's an old copy, get the latest version)
- Make sure you don't have a Firefox plug-in blocking it. Allow the site in NoScript and disable AdBlock plus.

I would bet that it has to do with the dimensions.

I suggest an alternate logo could be bigger in this context, using two lines of text.
e.g.
COLONY OF
GAMERS

Awesome. I was going to drop a hundred bucks tomorrow night after a few bills were paid. But some fuckstick broke a window on my car last night, and my insurance deductible is more than it would cost to replace the window. BUT on the bright side, another pay day is coming before the Child's Play charity comes to an end!

This is/?was? the first time I've had extra money to spend on a charity, and for some odd reason I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping I can save some extra cash fast so that I can attend the charity dinner as well.

Got my 2nd one! Thanks for your hard work, Toast. I'm sure there are a bunch of emails that you seem to be responsible for. I think we all appreciate your efforts here.

On another note: does your name mean a piece of bread that has no soul? Or, is it an event where drinks are raised in honor of something, but nobody put any feeling into it?? I like to think it is the former, and you should find a funny picture of toast for your avatar!

Thanks, Mach! I've enjoyed working on this!

I had never thought of my name as a drinking toast before, that made me laugh! I usually picture a slice of sandwich bread after making a deal with the devil. (Perhaps it was just bread before it lost it's soul, and was toasted by the flames of hell.)
