While checking out the latest from Twisted Pixel up in the Microsoft booth, I was introduced to a few devs from Double Fine who were showing off their latest, Trenched.

Trenched is a 3rd person, mech combat, tower defense game. Yeah, that’s about right. You have targets to defend from aliens and you can do so by laying down turrets near their path of attack with your mech. You can also support your turrets with your mech by attacking the aliens yourself. Once you’ve defeated a wave your mech can then suck up all the spare parts left by the enemies. These become somewhat of a currency in the game and are used in-between waves to upgrade your existing turrets or replace them with better ones.
I was playing single player and while I had fun I couldn’t help but think of playing with friends, and Double Fine is aware of this. Trenched comes equipped with 4-player online co-op. Working together as a team means all 4 players will share in the currency collected during combat. So, one guy on the far end of the map will get whatever spare parts another guy collects on the opposite side of the map. Also, after all the waves of enemies are complete, a loot box is dropped which is automatically collected by each player – although the items in the box are completely randomized with different mech parts, upgrades, collectibles and so on.

Speaking of mech parts, the customizations on your mech are tremendous. There are tons of different ways to outfit your mech and pretty much all of them translate into how your mech will operate. From legs, tank treads, chassis, and guns…my god the guns. Each mech comes with two different weapons, usually a rapid-fire weapon along with a more powerful heavy type weapon. Though that is completely customizable and up to you as to how you build your mech. If you are doing all of this in co-op, you’ll be able to see your teammates mechs and how they are outfitting them and get better ideas of the strengths and weaknesses that your team has and adjust from there. Again, there’s a very big push on teamwork when playing in co-op.

Unlike most of the previews we’ve been giving you from E3 where you’ll be waiting months to even up to a year to play some of these games, not so with Trenched. It releases exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade on June 22 for 1200 Microsoft Points.
