Is there no thread for this?
I searched and couldn't find one, which seems weird. I guess cos everyone's played the actual game a billion times before.
Anyway, I just picked this up and shot through the Deku Tree and am very impressed.
Be warned that the original is my favourite game of all time and I was going to be blindly buying this anyway but this really is a beautiful looking remake.
I had seen the screens and knew it was getting somewhat of a facelift but it really is something else when seen in motion.
It's a big surprise especially as Mercernaries was the opposite for me (looks terrible compared to the promo shots), and I was really mostly just expecting slightly higher res textures but they've spruced up the game in pretty much every way imaginable.
It's really weird, most remakes seem to go to either end of the spectrum, and feel exactly like a clone of the original with prettier graphics, or they screw with the controls/physics significantly so it feels like an entirely different beast, but this one seems to really walk the line right between and it's great.
The controls feel more responsive than ever, the new menu system is GREAT (access to anything with just a couple taps of your thumbs, no more slow pause > cycle to right menu screen > navigate to right block etc) and you have access to 4 sub items + the ocarina at any given time without switching things around in the menu.
The sound is almost entirely identical, but I noticed the Ocarina tone has changed slightly.
The character models look really nice, as do the variety of new facial expressions (Link now has more emotions than just apathy and shock!), and they animate really well and really smoothly. Link's cap blows around behind him and he runs about and his leaps and rolls look quite dramatic. I laughed at lot at Mido's grumpy animation as he stomps off to let you pass through to the Deku tree.
Everything just feels really fresh and shiny and great, but at the same time exactly as the game is "supposed" to look and feel and sound, and I feel right at home with it and cleared the intro of the game in no time at all.
There is a new gimmick to the controls in that you can look around in the real world to control the first person view in game. It is definitely a gimmick but a fairly fun one when used with the slingshot (and I guess bow and arrow/hookshot etc) which actually lets you aim really quickly and accurately. You have to swing your whole body and head around while you do it though, if you're using the 3D. It's also pretty neat in that while you hold L (z targetting) you can use this feature to look slightly in any direction. So, while you're locked on and fighting something ahead of you, you can physically move the DS to your side to pan the camera in that direction and check out what's happening over there.
I can't comment on if they've changed the dialogue at all, as this is my first time playing the Japanese version, but it seems pretty identical so far.
Obviously I'm not far in yet but it really feels like the perfect remake; they changed just enough superficial stuff to make it really shiny and up to snuff against modern titles, but kept everything else exactly as it always has been.
The ONLY THING I can think of which might annoy some people is that I don't think I saw an option at startup to play Master Quest; looks like you might have to finish the game once to unlock it. I'll confirm that later but if you have played the original game to death and were planning on picking this up just for MQ, that's a pretty solid time investment you have to put in first to get access to what you want.

There is no thread about this because most of us don't have it yet, it doesn't come out int he U.S. for three more days.

Right, but most games (especially big and/or Nintendo ones) have a thread up weeks or months ahead of launch (usually thanks to EvAv Novice!), so I was worried I had missed one.
Also, just to confirm, there's no option to start Master Quest yet, looks like you do have to go through the game once first. I was planning to play the original game first so it's fine for me but I can definitely see this being a nuisance for some people. I mean the original game usually takes me a minimum of 12 hours per play through and I know it like the back of my hand.

Thanks for writing your impressions, Lon Lon. OOT is my favorite game as well, so I'm really looking forward to this when it releases on Sunday. I fired up the original yesterday to tinker around a bit, and after watching videos of the 3DS version, it really is remarkable how much they've done to it graphically (especially Link's model). Kudos to Nintendo for doing it right and not just sticking a rom on a 3DS cart.

Will be picking it up from Gamestop on Sunday!
The only pre-order bonus it had going for it was some tiny poster, so I'm diappointed in that, but Club Nintendo is giving away a soundtrack (https://club.nintendo.com/ocarina_of_time_3d_soundtrack_offer.do) that more than makes up for the fact.

Another 2 weeks for us. I'm still debating grabbing the orcarina version.
Thanks for the impressions. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it Sunday. I've actually never beaten OOT - got to the Water Temple and got angry and stopped right when it came out and never revisited. Hopefully I can remedy that.

I'm betting those run out nearly instantly. Since I won't be picking my game up until Sunday morning (rather than at midnight), I'm not holding out much hope for it.

Woah.
Goron-boob jiggle physics.
You have been warned.
Started noticing some of the newer stuff too, there's oversized stones of truth you can crawl into and watch video hints for pretty much every puzzle in the game. Pretty neat for anyone new to the game and not familiar with video game logic, I guess. They're almost a ghetto achievement system in a way as they get ticked off as you solve various puzzles in the game or do random tasks like catch a fairy in a bottle.
There's also tonnes of really nice details added all over the place. Anju's house in Kakariko, for example, has these drawings littered everywhere which hint at the items you get later in the game. There's posters all over town walls, relevant plaques in front of the different shops and cute cavemen like scribbles all over goron city.
The original had so many cool details and easter eggs and they seem to have only increased them. A few have been changed, too, like the mario/yoshi portraits inside Hyrule Castle which are now a large mural of a super mario level instead.
Just got sucked into Jabu Jabu and it's looking grosser than ever.

My gaming budget is limited so I only rented it for now. I can't wait for it to come in the mail though. Lon Lon, you are making the wait for this game harder.

I'll get this when I get a 3DS, and probably have fun with it... but it would be a system seller for me if they added an extra dungeon or something. As it is, it's a prettier version of the best game ever. When Super Mario 64 went on the DS, they added 30 more stars. Why not a little extra here, aside from interface tweaks and boss rush?

I'm betting Nintendo is printing up a TON of them. Remember when Super Mario All-Stars was limited? They just did another printing.

Well, this iteration includes the "master quest" version, which includes entirely retooled and harder dungeons. So there are essentially like, 10 new dungeons, if you haven't played the master quest version before.
So there's that.

I saw this for sale at a store in the mall today. I guess they're selling it a little early. I'll wait for my copy from amazon. Hopefully they won't run out of the soundtracks too quickly.

Argh, friendly reminder to SAVE FREQUENTLY.
I pressed the home button to check the time and one of those shop channel presents popped up and it shut my game. Actually it might not have shut it at first, but it sure looked like it did so I installed the present which DEFINITELY shut it. My fault either way for not saving though.
Lost everything from start of adult link to the end of the forest temple.
You still have to save manually in this game, so do so every time you sleep the DS or something.
Still noticing lots of neat small details, for example some basic enemies have slightly different attacks now.
Enjoy the game everyone, and let's get some boss rush time competitions going!

But I have played it before. I preordered Wind Waker, and got the Ocarina of Time bonus disc. So, just boss rush, then.
I'm gonna try to get it at midnight from Walmart, but I fully expect them to fuck me like they did with the Transformers: Dark Of The Moon toys.

Items are X, Y, "I" and "II".
I and II are two squares in the top and bottom right corners of the touch screen respectively. Not the best buttons for something like the megaton hammer but works great for quick use things like bombs/deku nuts.
Shield is R, L is target.
Just finished the fire temple. A few weapons work very slightly differently too I noticed. Very minor stuff like the boomerang will now insta-return if you press it again mid flight, so you're not stuck defenseless strafing around if you miss completely.

Oh wow they've made the water temple much easier.
There's lines on the wall and diagrams showing you where/how much the water can be raised/lowered, and there's a big zoom shot on the hidden room with that one small key that stumps most people.
This is WITHOUT even checking out the video hints.
Probably a good thing, it's the most hated temple (but I felt super satisfied figuring it out myself after being stumped on that damn key the first time).
They've also fixed a bunch of bugs/exploits, like being able to leap to the top level controls in the water temple from the main room.

Yeah, Walmart fucked me. The clerk who was stocking electronics assured me that games only come out on Tuesday and then looked up on his computer that he had 0 in-stock. So I guess I'll head there at 8 a.m. to find the game sitting in the cabinets.

WHAT!?! Back in my day...
On the back of the box it says that have you to beat the main game to get Master Quest. The soundtrack CD will start shipping July 5th, allow 1-2 weeks for delivery.

Alright so Club Nintendo's site is a piece of crap. A word of warning, after you register the game there, do not touch your computer. Apparently a dialog is supposed to appear and ask you to accept the soundtrack offer. I never saw it and there's no way to get back to it.
Tons of people are having the same problem, Nintendo's phone line is the busiest it's ever been, impossible to get through. I send them an e-mail on their support site, hopefully that'll do the job.
Just ridiculous the way they have it set up like that though.
As to the game, I got screwed by Amazon. I ordered one copy from them and one copy from Gamestop. Amazon now says it won't get here till Wednesday (when I thought it would be release day shipping and get it Monday), they won't let me cancel it either so I went ahead and gave my Gamestop copy to my sister, whom I intended to give the Amazon copy to tomorrow.................hopefullly I'll get to play it sometime this week.
It's not a dialog box that appears, it re-directs you immediately after you click finish on the registration to the rewards page where you select what address to ship it to. That sucks that so many people are having problems, but there was nothing ridiculous about how they have it set up.

Except that it didn't, so it is is ridiculous. Because there's no way to get back to it. There should be a link on the registered games page next to Ocarina of Time, or on the offer page when it detects you have the game registered, to change your reward status.
(Nintendo support number still "receiving a high volume of calls" doesn't even put you in a queue, hopefully my e-mail will do the trick. If not there's still my 2nd copy coming Tuesday or Wednesday...)
Edit: Finally got an e-mail from them. Looks like they're giving it to everyone who registers by tonight...sucks for the people who only ordered from Amazon.

Satertek's List of Nitpicks:
>When the Deku Tree dies, the color doesn't "flow" upwards.
>Navi's messages are even more annoying, couldn't they have had it blink only on the bottom screen?
>When Link looks through the window in Zelda's garden and Ganndorf looks at him, it looks retarded as he opens his mouth and goes :D as he looks over.
>I have to hold the DS nearly upside down (turned ~120 degree to the left) to play the ocarina.

Just got the CD in the mail today, it's neat but I already owned the original game's OST so it's exactly the same plus only one extra track, which is:
the cool orchestral medley you get during the end credits of the 3DS version.
The insert has some kinda neat glossy art too I guess, but otherwise there's not really anything new or special here as far as these things go, so don't feel too bad if you missed out!
Did those NOA club nintendo kinks get worked out in the end though?

Since I don't have a 3DS, and really have no desire to get one just for OoT 3D, I downloaded it on the VC and played a bit last night, going through the Deku Tree and meeting Zelda in Hyrule Castle. While it's not as pretty as the 3DS version, it's cleaned up enough to be really nice to play even after all these years. Sure it's a bit blurry, and the classic controller takes some getting used to, but it's still fun. Maybe I should start a thread for those of us getting our Zelda fix some other way. ;)
