When I first heard about Operation Raccoon City, I initially dismissed it as a wannabe Left 4 Dead. I now think that would be a great disservice to the game. Let's dive in and find out what makes this game interesting.

The Resident Evil franchise has had a lot of spinoffs; from games like the Outbreak and The Umbrella Chronicles, Capcom has certainly dipped their toes into a few different genres. Operation Raccoon City dives into the co-op third person shooter game, and does it with aplomb.

I mentioned my comparison to Left 4 Dead, and like that game you have four players taking on lots of zombies. Where this game differs is where it gets interesting. For starters, you choose a character that has specific talents and perks. You'll have classes like Spec-Ops and medics. The medic can do things like heal and manipulate the T-Virus, temporarily controlling some of the infected creatures. While the more combat oriented characters have various means of dispatching enemies.

Unlike previous Resident Evil games, you'll have to deal with possible infection, you can slow the infection by taking anti-virals. Of course, if you want to eat your friends, I guess you can skip that.

Enemies range from your basic RE zombie, but you'll also be fighting Raccoon City Police, US Special Forces and B.O.W.s. Your primary mission in Raccoon City is to eliminate any witnessness, witnesses such as Leon Kennedy and Clair Redfield.

The game will also feature competitive multiplayer, with players squaring off as members of the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Forces and the Bio Organic Weapons.

Operation Raccoon City is scheduled to release in Q4 of this year. It looks to be an interesting and fun addition to the Resident Evil franchise. I am looking forward to playing it soon.

Huh... so we actually play as the bad guys this time? That's fairly interesting, and I like the gameplay footage.

One of my most anticipated titles coming this year. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Is that guy using a zombie as a human shield? Doesn't that seem a little daft?

Anyway. I'm into this game, no matter the lamentations of those who just want a retread of 1-3.

assume this is 360/ps3? looks pretty good. I really liked the RE Outbreak games when they were active. hopefully this does well.

Yes, 360/PS3. Sorry about that.

LOL I see the 'zombie shield' as well. I love Capcom.

while the zombie hostage is Super R-type Tarded...this looks like it could be a fun return to Raccoon City, and it is something I've always secretly desired after playing RE4, is RE2 redone with the gameplay of RE4. probably the closest I'll get.

but my interest in console gaming is diminishing just so damn much...

I'm only lukewarm on this one.

Collision detection wasn't sharp, but that can be fixed. AI seems non existent. That comes with the territory to some degree, but at least L4D zombies knew where their enemies were. The vast majority of baddies in this one just mill about - Walking Dead-style. You shoot off as many as you like.

Also, wasn't a fan of the level design in the demo. The environments were very flat (non-interactive), and there always seemed like there was a place you were supposed to be, which is frustrating when you have such a massive playground. There hardly seemed to be much value in the layout despite its size. I took two teammates to the roof of a small building, and it turned into a game of Duck Hunt for us.

There is good variety in the enemies, though. And the game looks damned good. I also appreciate the pace a lot more than L4D. I know it's Operation Raccoon City, but I hope there are some really diverse levels, besides City Square, Mansion and Forest...I'd love some Umbrella Facility, RC Hospital, and some later bonuses levels from other RE games.

Was there any indication to how the inventory system works or if there was one at all? A system of using different weapons or did characters just have a set selection of weapons?

Honestly? Wasn't something I paid attention to. In the demo at least, you have specific weapons that you started with.

Gameplay wise it looked 'alright'.

But damn I'm a sucker for going back to Racoon City.....

One thing I'd love to know...will this be on the PC?
